Take this from an old framing carpenter. Hold that hammer towards the end of the hammer. You’ll be less tired and more accurate with your blows.

I know that feeling, exactly. I took the Vegas class. I could do the shrinks but I needed Carl or Cristian to point out to me what I needed, where, and how close I was to the shape. Puting shape in is easy, converting that shape to form is hard. They'd eye it, give it a tweak in their hands or over a thigh and suddenly the form was there.

I think that once you put the initial crease in the disk, you hammer the OUTSIDE peak down flattish. That "pins" the circumference down, and when you beat the high ridge, it forces the metal thicker, shrinking it. (At least that's how I remember it from a Karl video.)

Really cool work. I've always wanted to learn how to do that. The top of the fender that's rusted out behind the headlights of every 56 Chevy was the first thing that came to mind. I remember that on your last build, they only had one side in stock and they were ridiculously expensive. Being able to pop those out without being at the mercy of the repro people would be really useful.

I made 10 custom mini bike seat pans for a buddy of mine. The first 2 were out of 1/16 aluminum and the next 4 I did out of 14 ga cr and the last 4 was out of 16 ga stainless steel. I used the vice, wood bench, padded bar stool and my leg to stretch and shrink to get it to the contour and shape we wanted it to be. The aluminum worked fast and wasn’t as forgiving when over worked. It did give a bit of insight as to how far is to far though. We were also in high school when we did all this. I haven’t really done any real forming work since then either.

I did a little sand bag and English wheel work, the Plenishing hammer was ME and various die's! Fortunately, the cars I worked on weren't full of curves, like the '47 or the Tri 5's. 60's and 70's cars weren't as curvy. I do remember getting arm pump and waking up sore but, if you put the time in, it is a lot nicer than a puddy patch.

    Damn fine Job Dan,
I recall that Karl captured the tuck by beating down the tip of the tuck first and that helped shrink that metal in more quickly.
Great effort on the brow panel also and if you used your ball pran hammer on the steel top table you would stretch that reverse curve rather quickly also.
I reckon another half hour and you would have it.
As Karl, Brent and Wray Schein all say practice practise practise. And patience which I know you struggle with 😅
