My science teacher in high school was Carl Wallends son. I grew up in Sarasota Florida, the home of the circus. Lots of circus families and circus folk still live there and have transitioned to other professions as the circus has declined. I was regularly exposed to these interesting people, and in fact, Sarasota high school had a circus program with a big top high wires, the whole 9 yards for high school kids to learn about circus. This was in the early 80s, and I don’t think they do it anymore, but, it was absolutely fascinating to go to these high school productions and watch these kids pour their hearts out performing circus arts.
I grew up in Orlando. A child of the 80’s born in 79’. My grandparents lived in Sarasota and so we spent a ton of time there and I remember a heavy presence of circus there. It’s a really big memory from my childhood.
I was 17 years old when this happened, and I remember thinking, "Why??!!!!!" While I'm not afraid of heights, I wouldn't be walking across A WIRE on a windy day, 120 ft off the ground.

That's so scary and sad. I can't believe he tried it. At my age 38, I always think I can do things I did when I was younger. My brain tells me I can, but my body says no way. At 73, he had his brain telling him yes, but I can see the struggle in his face before the wind came. That's another thing they say. You have to do this kind of stunt on a day that's not windy and know a lot about wind because it can unexpectedly come. So tragic, but it's in their families' blood and all they know. Bless them all. Entertaining people for so many generations in one of the most dangerous ways.
You should exercise more, do some yoga or Pilates if you’re only 38 and saying you can’t do certain things anymore. That’s still pretty young. You’ll be 70 not even be able to walk around the block

This is so dangerous, I am confused why anyone would want to risk their life. Save for some insane miracle, if anyone falls, I don't see them surviving.
For the average person looking at this, of course, it is so dangerous. To this family, it is all they know, and it takes a huge level of danger out of their minds. They can't see it like we can. They know it can be risky, but they have so much confidence built within, almost like an ego, they think it won't happen, when it certainly can and does. I'm not talking bad about them, but that kind of thinking comes with many dangerous sports. The adrenaline, everything about it outweighs the bad in their mind. We all think its insane, but it's another victory for themselves when they do it, and they want more, and more, and more. It doesn't help when they have so many spectators cheering them on. It builds up that drive. They should honestly ban this because of the danger or have to have a net or something like mountain climbers wear to make it so much safer. Maybe they do have restrictions on it now, I'm not sure, but know they should.
As a kid I would love going to Sarasota on trips with the family...It is where Ringling Bros Circus would go in the offf easons to rest...We could pet the elephants and see the artists do their rehearsals for the next season...One of my school mates was in the circus with her family...She was a contortionist...Soo sad when they stopped the circus...I loved taking my kids...I even loved the circus as an adult...Great to see you in the warmth of Florida in the winter months...RIP to the Wallenda Family...God bless you little boy...Much love...

Karl Wallenda died doing what he loved, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there had been some people who had told him that this was a really bad idea that could go horribly wrong for him. I mean, he was 73 years old and had nothing left to prove.
I remember when this happened. I had been a fan of the circus since my earliest memories. I had seen the family perform several times and it was like losing a superhero. In my child's mind he was definitely an icon.
I live in Sarasota and the Wallendas are such a huge part of our city. As far as I know, Nick Wallenda is the only one still performing. Thank you for coming Lamont.

The Wallendas tragic pyramid fall did happen in Detroit in 1962. Two members died and one was paralyzed for life. I went to the circus the day after the tragic event with my family. Michigan eventually passed a law requiring safety nets.
Willie Wallenda bounced off the net and that’s why he died. Karl used that as further justification on not using a net because its presence wasn’t a guarantee of being able to escape unscathed.
