I used to to restore old Tri-ang models and found that Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner did a good job without damaging the paintwork. As with paint stripper gloves are essential! Excellent channel by the way!

Great channel, I've used Detol mixed 50/50 with water , just dump the wagon in and leave for a couple of days, works great ,

That’s cool. Thank you. If I get enough alternatives suggested, I might do a comparison video.

@peter, I used Dettol yesterday on a loco.... The smell is still lingering!! Lol 🤣 any reason you find adding water? I just went all in... Tbh in the end an IPA bath worked the best but sadly it appears I've lost the original livery underneath.

Bio Strip 20 is what you need , safe on plastics as well .

Yes I’ve seen that used before. I’ll certainly give it a try. For this video I really wanted to use products that you can pick up for the diy store, sonic you’ve only got one or 2 wagons to do, it’s not too expensive
Thanks for watching, and for your comments. Much appreciated 👍🏼

I have used a standard paint stripper on an old Wrenn loco body and within 20 mins it had dissolved the whole loco body, so be careful.

Yes sure. Good point. I’m sure that the named brands of paint stripper would be stronger, so take care.
I’ve stripped a few wagons in the b&q stripper and it’s been ok. As you can see it only takes a few minutes to get working, so keep an eye on the progress

Hi 👋... Enjoy your videos, question. If you have a loco that's been painted, what's the best way to strip it and preserve the original livery?

It depends on what its been painted with. If its acrylics, then airbrush thinners or IPA may work. Be careful around any original painted logos etc.
If its painted in enamels it may be very difficult to remove and keep the original paintwork

There's no relationship between B&Q and Home Depot -- they're just companies in the same line of business that both happen to have orange logos.

Fair comment. I thought that Home Depot owned B&Q but i stand corrected. Thank you

Hi Dave- That was informative 👍🏾 you mentioned with the van if there was no decal you would have painted over it but would you have primed it too ?
I repainted an old Hornby van and rubbed the decals off then primed and painted.
    Cheers Kev

Thanks Kev. Personally I’d prime it again, just to make it one consistent colour and easier to see anything that might need fixing. Plus if I was doing the livery in light grey for instance, it would be better to work from a lighter base colour rather that purple

I’d use white or grey primer

Hi what colour grey did you use? Was is Vallejo brand for GWR livery? Thanks!

It was just a mix of black and white primers. It was to consolidate all the colours to make it easier to view
