If you have a GOOD exotic pet shop near you, they may be willing to help your mom get over her fear. It is in their best interest after all. Snakes make the best pets IMHO. Quiet, don't smell, shed hair all over, destroy your things, demand much attention or any affection, easy to feed, the list goes on.
You should check out hognose snakes they’re the most adorable little things ever with their derpy little shovel faces plus they’re very unlikely to bite as a defensive measure. They flatten out their necks like a cobra and throw little hissy fits and mock strike meaning they strike but with their mouth closed and just boop you with their snoot.
I personally think they are sooo adorable, i went to go look at one and hold him, he was soo soft surprisingly and so derpy lol i didn't want to let him go lol
Ive had Walter my Kenyan sand boa for about a year now and he's hands down my favorite pet to hold and admire his coloration is very bright and sharp and he's very active and always hungry. He's grown considerably very quickly and I've had no regrets. 11/10
Was thinking of getting a corn snake as a gift to myself for getting through my first year of vet school. I need a low maintenence pet that didn't really care to much about me handling it, besides being food giver. I didn't want to be neglecting it when midterms and finals picked up because I wouldn't be able to handle it and only feeding them once a week was a big bonus. I knew a snake would be perfect for that. I saw this when it came out and after doing some more research I decided to change my mind and go with a Kenyan sand boa instead. I couldn't be happier with my choice. I didn't even realize these existed before I saw this video. I was worried the corn snake would be a bit to active for me to handle while i studied but the sand boa is perfect it doesnt move around to much and if u have to put it down for a moment it never goes far (if anywhere). I can't remember if you mentioned it in the video but these guys can be difficult to transfer to f/t if they were fed live before you got them. I didn't realize mine was being fed live until I got it and it was a beast to change over. It took 6 weeks of it striking and letting go and me having to change what I was doing to make sure she was interested the entire feeding experience until it got all the way in or she would push it back out. They can be changed over but it will take a bit of research and asking around for what others do, planning how you are gonna present food to the snake that week before you do it, and a lot of patience while you might wrestle for an hour to get them to finally give in and eat. Even with this issue though I am really happy i got this snake thank you so much for making a video about it because it wasn't even on my radar before.
joshua lieberman hi! I really want a snake and am thinking of getting a sand boa. But I’m just wondering if they bite, will it cause me much pain or damage or is it just a little nibble? If so, do you know a pet snake that doesn’t bite or too small to hurt anyone?
@@evar5831 when they bite it is comparable to a cat scratch. dont even need a bandage usually. of course it depends on someones pain level if it hurts super bad or not. if you get one get a male. they get smaller and therefor will not hurt as much with a bite. the kenyan sand boa isnt really known to bite often anyways unless its a food thing. if your really worried about a bite though get a rubber boa.
@@evar5831 A bit late, but as the last person said... The pain is nothing. Just make sure to wash your hands afterwards! It'll probably be fine, but it's good to be careful!
This was my first snake and I highly recommend them. I have an anery stripe and she is the sweetest thing. I do half sand, half aspen with water on the cool aspen side and she’s thriving.
For the sand issue, if you're willing to do it, it's always possible to have one half with safer substrate, and the other with sand. So they'll get some of their preferred substrate, but they'll also get a safer substrate that'll be a great place for the water bowl! This may also be my aesthetic loving side
This video was a deciding factor in me recently getting my first pet snake--an adult female anerythristic Kenyan Sand Boa. She is such an awesome, beautiful animal! Very sweet and docile. However, I should have paid closer attention to the part about the locking lid! She escaped for a few days, but, thankfully, found by the refrigerator. :D Keep up the great work with your channel!
melmicsim I have the exact same snake and she is such a sweetheart! Her name is petunia lol. Almost 2 years old now, just upgraded her to a 20 gallon tank

@@dirtbunnii I think all Anery Kenyan Sand Boas only have solid black eyes I've looked at tons of pictures online and I've never seen any other eye color on an Anery
I got my very first snake recently & decided on an anery Kenyan Sand Boa after watching this video! He has been with me for a couple months now, and he is entering his first shed with me... he is just perfect! Eats every week eagerly, super calm while handling, super curious, & very, very cute!! During the day, I usually only see his little head, but at night, he really starts to stroll about! Couldn’t have asked for a better first time snake! Thank you for helping me decide; I already know he won’t be my last/only Kenyan Sand Boa!
"Availability" as a decision factor seems a lot less important than the others. Once you buy it, it's doesn't matter. The other factors are life-long. Maybe "Availability' shouldn't be weighted as heavily as the others. It seems like "Care" is almost as important as everything else combined.
Don't put too much weight on the overall score. Every animal we have recommended is the best pet reptile for somebody. Not being able to find one can be a deal breaker for some people.
It can play a part in some people's decision making, and is therefore good to consider. Also the videos are meant to be as informative as possible, so part of why it's brought up is to make people aware of however hard it may be, and gives the host a chance to elaborate on where exactly they're available. With both of those things in mind, and using myself as an example, I would really prefer to buy a reptile directly from a reputable breeder, to ensure they're in good condition, and would prefer to do so at a reptile expo. That's partly to ensure the animal, again, is in good condition, but also will help me pick one partly based on whether or not they bond with/get along with me, as that does tend to vary from one individual to the next, and I don't see a point blindly picking one that may hate me. Reptiles that aren't obtainable from an expo, or may be harder to find, do end up lower on my mental list of favorites, just because of how heavily I prioritize those factors.
I really appreciate the respectful way you handle and talk about the reptiles. I watch other channels and, while I don't think for a second they are mistreating the animals, they don't show the care and kindness towards them that you do.
I love your videos! You have a way about you, that makes it really fun and easy to listen and to learn and also I think that there aren't many channels that are as informative and interesting as this one. Keep your great work up!!

I just picked up a KSB two days ago from my local expo. I fell in love with her the moment I held her! She's an anery and is two months old and I definitely stole Clint's name of Sarlacc because it's just absolutely perfect. This video is the only reason I knew of sand boas and I'm so happy I saw it because she's gorgeous
Met one a few days ago when perusing a reptile shop. The lady was very nice and knowledgeable. Glad to see that they are a good idea for a beginner snake
I got to touch and hold one of these at the local reptile zoo a little while back. It felt like holding a cool room temperature sausage wrapped in plastic wrap. Very unusually smooth and slightly squishy, very neat.
I've been trying to get a pet snake forever and my dad has always said no. But finally he gave in and said I can get a snake if I buy it with my own money and care for it with my own money. I'm getting my first ever pay check from my first ever job in two weeks and it's all going towards buying a snake. It'll only be about $150, but my nearby Pet Expo has a baby sand boa that no one's buying. I took my dad there with me to look at the Rosy Boa they have right now, but it's albino and $300 so I wouldn't be able to get it for at least a month and by then it'll probably be bought up. But the man showing off the Boa said "would you like to see our Sand Boa?" My dad fell in love with that little snake. It's just a baby right now and it's so stinking cute. I have a 10 gallon tank right now, a heat mat, and an old water dish. So all I need is the substrate, food, and some decorations (and a lid for the enclosure, but I don't think the lil guy would be able to get up to the top right now anyways. But I don't want to risk it). I have no clue what to feed such a tiny snake so I'd have to ask, and he costs $100 so I probably wouldn't have enough to buy everything need. But I think my dad likes it enough that he'd buy the first batch of mice and then I could buy em myself afterwords. They're not a snake I ever considered getting before today, but after holding it, seeing how pretty they are, and watching my dads face light up as he held it, I definitely want to get one. It's amazing how one interaction can change your whole view on something.
@@justinlong6847 I did not 😅 My first paycheck ended up being smaller than I expected, and by time I would have saved up enough he was gone. Instead I decided to keep saving up. I convinced my dad to take me to the NARBC Tinley Reptile show for my birthday in March (it was held just a week after) and I brought over 500 dollars for a snake alone. I ended up buying the snake I truly wanted from the beginning, a hognose snake. His name is Hades and he's Diablo line het albino! Currently about to upgrade him from his temporary 10 gallon on aspen shaving into a bioactive 40 gallon enclosure!
Top-notch content, as always. For being a grumpy pants, your female was certainly on her best behavior. Are these your only two Kenyans or do you have more?
I adopted a sweet little nuclear Kenyan sand boa today, and he's the best first pet snake I could ask for. His name is Finnick (yes I named him after a Zootopia character) and I love him.
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I obtained my first KSB this past Monday and this video was the deciding factor. Her name is Rio (named after the song by Duran Duran).
I am getting a Kenyan sand boa this month it’s going to be my first snake I have always wanted a snake but my parents didn’t want a big snake and we finally found a breeder I am getting all the supplies now and I have been doing all my research my aunt is also getting one I am getting a male because of the size I am so excited ^^
Hey, I've been watching your videos for almost a year and love your personality, enthusiasm. All of your videos the advice you give is very accurate too. I've been trying for many years to get my mom to even come to my friends house to just look at the snakes from a far. Showing pictures, videos, articles, debunking myths and today OMG I was almost crying from happiness. My mom said Kenyan sand boas are 9/10 cute and that I can possibly buy one when I get all of my grades higher by one.
I know this is old but thank you. I'm getting ready to get my setup and get my first snake which is going to be a beautiful albino kenyan sand boa never heard of them until recently and feel in love with one at my local pet shop
I went into a new reptile store in my area and they had a couple of these and I never realized how neat these boas look I almost bought ones! I believe I will be getting one in my near future!
Photo credit on the albino: David Shortt of South Alabama Sand Boas. Feel free to add me on Facebook and see what litters drop this season. Thank you guys and great video.
This is one of the pets I want to have when I'm out of the parent's house. Other than my 2 dogs, I want a sand boa, 2 Japanese Fire Belly Newts, and North American Cane Toad!
Hi Clint. I decided my first snake would be a Kenyan Sand Boa because of this video and I'm getting one at the reptile expo in February! I'm so excited!!!
I would totally love to see a video on rosy boas! They're very similar to sand boas but they're native to the United States and they look different based on where they are from! Super cool animals!
I think I'll get a snake eventually, but I'm trying to decide between a kenyan sand boa and a western hognose. Tough choice! I've never seen either type locally, and there haven't been any reptile expos near me but in July there's going to be one only 40 minutes from me so I'm going to see what snakes they have there.
Absolutely the best snakes ever! I love all the colors form normal to all the cool morphs. Amazing animals and we love to work with ours. Thanks for a Awesome Video!
I got one, she was very smol and shy, took me month to make her adapt to me and to her enclosure, I never saw her, half of the time refuse to eat. Now it's summer, she know me, she eat well (even if she is scared when a wiggle the dead mouse around her, she likes when i put it in a corner and don't moove it) is kinda curious, sticking her head outside the sand ( disclaimer : i feed her outside her enclosure and the water bowl is higher so no sand in it). She even sometimes explore a bit, she is a great pet but keep in mind it's shy and you will rarely see them.
Also, something I've found in my experience that weighs heavily on the care-difficulty is the humidity the species requires. If you live in a dry area (like me) you need to mist the enclosure at least once every couple days. This can infringe on that vacation time you generally have with snakes and is important to consider when selecting your perfect pet snake. Cheers!
I have a baby Kenyan Sand Boa and we were clueless on its gender. I saw your video, learned a bit about my baby snake, and saw that it was a female. It was really easy to find her gender thanks to your help!
I just got a Kenyan sand boa ( as you can see in my profile picture) and I would agree that these reptiles are amazing for reptile owners and I would recommend them for beginners if you’ve done your research!❤️🐍
I was pretty sure I'd get one next but I feel like rosy boa is going to be my next snake :) I hope there will be a video about them as well, even though their care is very similar to corn snake's. I heard that they're pretty easy to handle, but I'd like to hear more.
I got my first KSB last week! She’s so cute. She’s an anery het albino (snow) and she’s soooo little. She didn’t eat yet but we’re gonna try again tomorrow since it will have been a week since I got her. Fingers crossed!
just got my first kenyan Sand boa this weekend at a herp how...... no fancy morph..... i dont need that..... she sure is tiny and looking forward to her eathing the first time.... just adorable!
For people wanted a bit more details on substrates dehydration and shedding issues are very common from people using sand because in the wild there is moisture underground that they spend a lot of time in and pure sand wet is no good cause it clumps up so you want a good mixture of reptile top soil and play sand but if you want to try something simpler and easy to clean you can try the zilla walnut (sand alternative) but I'd still only use it for temp and emergency enclosures and make sure to have a moist hide of moss for em :) you can also look up more mixture details for different purposes.
I only found out about these guys recently , a friend who keeps reptiles showed me theirs and oh my god I fell in love with them! Im now going to get one . Beautiful noodles !
I like these and really want one but the thing that sucks is my mom HATES snakes. She thinks that they'll get out of a tank and sneak out and says that "they're just so creepy" And I'll probably never get one while I'm living with her which also sucks because I'm at least 7 years away from being able to get my own house. So... yea
Hey would love to see videos on blood pythons and Taiwanese beauty snakes, is that a possibility? . Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. The best on UA-cam - keep up the great work !
Even though this is an older video, I've still found the information very useful and still relevant today (2023). Thank you for making this video. I'm currently awaiting the arrival of one of these beauties (sex unknown as yet). I've agreed to take on a ksb a cousin of a friend has rescued from a not-ideal situation and can't keep herself. This will be reptile #15 in my current collection and snake #8. I'm very much looking forward to learning all about this species firsthand. 🤘🏻❤️🔥
Loved it!!! Great video and amazing content as usual! May I ask you if you have the possibility to do a video about egg-eating snakes? (Dasypeltis) I adore them but sadly there's not a lot of information to be found. Anyway thank you for the brilliant work, I'm always looking forward your next video :))
Your videos are awesome and entertaining! I really like how you rate each reptile based on different characteristics! Can you do a video like this on the rubber boa? There are a lot of videos out there about finding them in the wild but very little on the care/maintenance of them.
Since this particular snake burrows have you ever had or seen any issues with a heat mat malfunctioning and the snake's belly scales burned? Could you recommend any other options? I live in Tucson, AZ where it can get to 100+ on the summer and keep my apartment at a reasonable temperature. Your channel has essily become one of my favorite reptile channels in all of UA-cam. I love it! Please keep it up.
Hahaha I LOVE my Sand Boa! I can't remember the science name, but he's the black and white morph. I will say I had a problem with getting mine to eat. He is a hatchling and he refuses to eat frozen thawed. It took me 4 months before I found a pet store that had live pinkies for him. Now he eats like a champ! Just hoping to get him on to frozen before he makes the leap to Hoppers.
I just got a 1.5 year old KSB and I don’t think she was properly cared for! She’s been with me for 4 days. Last night she wasn’t very active and this morning when I saw her she was in the same spot. She’s my first snake.
I love how they just look like big, spotted worms
I got my first sand boa! He'll be on his way soon. A bright orange paradox, he looks like a ravioli. That being said.. His name is Chef Boyardee.
How's it going with your snake?
Can't be both orange(a normal) and anery.

Did you get your sand boa?
@@justinlong6847 I did not 😅
My first paycheck ended up being smaller than I expected, and by time I would have saved up enough he was gone.
She was good. I actually only have one, but I would like to get a female soon. I just love that size!
top notch? 0:32
I subbed, you seem so humble and know so much of the reptiles :)
I adopted a sweet little nuclear Kenyan sand boa today, and he's the best first pet snake I could ask for. His name is Finnick (yes I named him after a Zootopia character) and I love him.
We just got a Sand Boa and named him Clint.
I love your channel. Recently got a rosy boa and did a lot of research but a video on them would be really cool!
We will have to!
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I obtained my first KSB this past Monday and this video was the deciding factor. Her name is Rio (named after the song by Duran Duran).
Hey cool deal,I just got 2 Kenyan sand boa snakes in the last month! You should make a video of your sand boa.
Clint, who would you recommend as a good breeder for Kenyan sand boa's?
honestly they are great. my favorite for a starter snake, its different, easy to keep, and very docile.
Omg! It matches your tie! Excellent!
I know this is old but thank you. I'm getting ready to get my setup and get my first snake which is going to be a beautiful albino kenyan sand boa never heard of them until recently and feel in love with one at my local pet shop
I showed my cousin this snake and she was like *why did they photoshop patterns and a head on a earthworm*
._
.
You forgot your other eye
Just got my baby male sand boa today. His name is Sal and I love him with all my heart❤
I’m going to a expo in February hopefully I can find one!
This guy has the best salesman personality/voice in the world
This man is to precious for this world.
Hi Clint. I decided my first snake would be a Kenyan Sand Boa because of this video and I'm getting one at the reptile expo in February! I'm so excited!!!
Best time of the week when you upload!!!!
You're too nice!
I came from the 90s big snake world. Got my first kenyan last year and now I want a hundred of them !
Absolutely the best snakes ever! I love all the colors form normal to all the cool morphs. Amazing animals and we love to work with ours. Thanks for a Awesome Video!
I’m surprised that a channel like yours doesn’t have videos of your snakes!
Getting one tomorrow thanks for influencing my decision and helping me with research and entertainment:)
Make a video of your sand boa!
@@Blackhorse11773 I have no clue how to upload or edit videos XD
@@Blackhorse11773 I just tried it out, it’s her from a couple months ago drinking just water lol
I was hoping you would do a video on Kenyan Sand Boas. I've been debating between a Western Hognose and a KSB.
Why not both? Haha
It comes down to derp vs grump
At the last reptile expo I went to, these guys were the third most available snake, even more than corn snakes and hognoses
the fact that you said theyre small makes it all the better for me
one thing to keep in mind is they live a very long time, so make sure you'll have a stable place to keep it for the next 20 years
Also, something I've found in my experience that weighs heavily on the care-difficulty is the humidity the species requires. If you live in a dry area (like me) you need to mist the enclosure at least once every couple days. This can infringe on that vacation time you generally have with snakes and is important to consider when selecting your perfect pet snake. Cheers!
I love your enthusiasm for the snakes bro.
I have a baby Kenyan Sand Boa and we were clueless on its gender. I saw your video, learned a bit about my baby snake, and saw that it was a female. It was really easy to find her gender thanks to your help!
I have 14 sand boas right now and they are my favorite reptile ever. Love them. I have a super crazy one, but my others are amazing. Awesome video!
Im a fan of aneries myself because I love monochromatic colors.
Dude in another video with sand boas vs hog nose and he said they were small. DUDE THAT FEMALE WAS GIGANTIC I seen one that was 5 feet long 😱😱😱😳😳
Sand boas never get 5 feet long. Females get 3 feet max.
0:31 my god, that snake truly embraced the noodle lifestyle
oh man i've been waiting for the sand boa vid :) great job!
I just got a Kenyan sand boa ( as you can see in my profile picture) and I would agree that these reptiles are amazing for reptile owners and I would recommend them for beginners if you’ve done your research!❤️🐍
Hey Lexi, I just got two Kenyan sand boa snakes in the last month! If you still have your sand boa you should make a video of it!
@@Blackhorse11773 I might! You can follow my Instagram them @/mothermedusaa
@@Blackhorse11773 I post all of my snakes on there!
@@lexijones2617 okay cool deal,I’ll check it out 😎
I love my KSB shes very chill and has the derpiest face 😂 her name is Muppet because she looks like a sock puppet
I was pretty sure I'd get one next but I feel like rosy boa is going to be my next snake :) I hope there will be a video about them as well, even though their care is very similar to corn snake's. I heard that they're pretty easy to handle, but I'd like to hear more.
Thank you Clint for all the information on the Kenyan sand boa. Its been extremely helpful
This guy sounds like Blippi and I love it 😂❤️ btw I have a Kenyan sand boa too! They are really easy to take care of and a great starter snake.
Love my sand boa! He’s so sweet and docile that I nap with him 💕
Kaelyn Strish make sure not to squish 'em lol
I got my first KSB last week! She’s so cute. She’s an anery het albino (snow) and she’s soooo little. She didn’t eat yet but we’re gonna try again tomorrow since it will have been a week since I got her. Fingers crossed!
We got sand boas in India too
They are quite shy when corner will mostly give mock charge/strike
Can you talk about smooth or rough green snakes? They aren't to popular as pets but they are great viewing animal. Awesome video too!
He’s like the biology I never had the best thing is that he’s enthusiastic
just got my first kenyan Sand boa this weekend at a herp how...... no fancy morph..... i dont need that..... she sure is tiny and looking forward to her eathing the first time.... just adorable!
i just bought a kenyan sand boa today. i held him at a local pet store a few days ago and couldnt stop thinking about him.
3 years,is he or she doing good still :)
I love this guy, he just looks so happy
Saarlac the burrowing sand boa.... I get the reference 👌😂
I like these and really want one but the thing that sucks is my mom HATES snakes.
She thinks that they'll get out of a tank and sneak out and says that "they're just so creepy"
And I'll probably never get one while I'm living with her which also sucks because I'm at least 7 years away from being able to get my own house. So... yea
Hey would love to see videos on blood pythons and Taiwanese beauty snakes, is that a possibility? . Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. The best on UA-cam - keep up the great work !
We could do that! Thank you for the kind words. That is what makes this all worth while.
Lol my Sand boa tries to escape all the time
Even though this is an older video, I've still found the information very useful and still relevant today (2023). 🤘🏻❤️🔥
Good video and great information for anyone interested in keeping Kenyan sand boa snakes as lifelong pets 👍
Loved it!!! Great video and amazing content as usual!
May I ask you if you have the possibility to do a video about egg-eating snakes? (Dasypeltis)
I adore them but sadly there's not a lot of information to be found.
Anyway thank you for the brilliant work, I'm always looking forward your next video :))
I would love to cover them in the future.
I feel like I was expecting a boa size snake. This is a pleasant surprise
Can you please do a video like this with a Frilled Dragon? I’m considering getting one and I would like to know more. Thanks.
Thanks for making this video! I was hoping you would. There aren’t many educational videos on Kenyan sand boa’s. I am thinking about getting one!
My snakes love climbing up sleeves too. :)
got a snow sand boa, the easiest way to find it is spotting the little red eyes lol only about 6 inch's right now
Hey brother make a video of your sand boa.
They’re so derpy! God bless them
Hahaha I LOVE my Sand Boa!
