That was only half the song! Kris actually landed a helicopter on Johnny's estate to pitch the song. Note: Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar. He was an Army Ranger and helicopter pilot. Gave up his military career to pursue song writing
When he left the military to come to Nashville to pursue a musical/song writing career, he took a job as a janitor at Columbia Records to be close to the music business. This move broke ties with his mother and father who had a distinguished military background. Kris was told not to contact them because he was not welcomed in their home.
Kristofferson was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford, and graduated from West Point. He was a literary genius, and a poet laureate level poet and songwriter. He was one of the premier wordsmiths in American history.
At 16 we had a family trip to Branson, Mo. where we got to watch Johnny Cash. To my surprise my mom asked if we could meet him. He announced my birthday on stage and sang Tennesee Stud and got to go backstage to meet him and June backstage. It was the greatest Bday and one I will never forget.
I can't even express to you how much Johnny and Kris mean to me!! I've never met either of them and I've never even seen them perform live but, I've watched or read every interview, every recorded performance, every biography, every documentary..... They've each lived a hundred lifetimes! The love they have for God, their families and each other is so inspirational to me and has led me through some very dark times. Kris is one of the most gifted lyricists ever! And Johnny's presence is nothing short of awe inspiring! Bono said that Johnny walking into a room was exactly "as Moses parting the Red Sea". Bob Dylan said "Johnny was as constant as the North Star. You could set your ship by him". Bob still performs several of Johnny's songs on his never ending tour and mentions how much he misses him. These are two of the greatest artists of all time. But, also two of the greatest men!
Kris Kristofferson was one of the greats of song writing from any era.. Such is my view of this man.. A great Poet and song writer.... This song is one of The greatest songs from Kris.. My Favorite from this legend... This was a great version BUT I always love to return to Kris Kristofferson's version every time..
My God I miss Kris. Such an amazing poet. He makes it sound so easy to express the deepest life experiences in words that no one else ever thought of stringing together, yet once you hear them, you can't think of hearing them any other way. Do go to find the whole song - recommend the live performance of The Highwaymen Live at Nassau Coliseum. Kris & Johnny do it together, but the entire song. Last word - the CBS execs in charge of The Johnny Cash Show tried to get Cash to change the line from "wishing I was stoned" to "wishing I was home" Johnny asked Kris what he thought, and Kris said "it's not really the same thing". So Johnny sang it the way it was written out of respect to Kris. These are two giants we will never see again.
Oh wow, you summed up my feelings perfectly! Big lump in my throat. I love the songs that Kris wrote over his career, so much deep feeling. What an incredible man! Big bonus was his friendship with Johnny, and with so many other legends. We will always miss Kris!
Thank you for reviewing this one Sebs. It is a beautiful song and it speaks to anyone who longs for the comfort of what they may have lost as a child (church, family, etc) and who is eaten by the regret of the life they may be living which may have led to that loss. Kris is a master at storytelling and this is no exception.
I love this song and I have always heard just Johnny singing it. I clicked immediately to be able to hear both him and Kris Kristoferson singing it together. Thank you for sharing this and for your commentary.
Kris's version will always be the better one for me. You can feel the loneliness of the "Sunday morning sidewalk" more when he sings it. Kris sings it slower, with his friends (like Billy Swan) as great backup singers, and the writing comes from his own experiences. Johnny's version is okay, but it's more just a general song when Johnny does it.
Agreed. There's a melancholy, a void, and feeling of loss that's missing in Johnny Cash's version. I am glad Cash did invite him to the show and offer credit for his wonderful song writing to a national TV audience.
This is one of my favorite Kris's songs and you explained exactly how the song has always made me feel. Sadness, with hope that things will get better. And thankful to God that they do,
Kris was new to the spotlight at that time and it was easy to see how nervous he was singing alongside the great Johnny Cash. Those two became great friends and eventually joined with Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings to form the supergroup The Highwaymen. A few dozen awards later -- including a Golden Globe -- and Kris was no longer nervous in the spotlight. Unfortunately, what you heard there was just a brief snippet of this Grammy-winning, former No. 1 country song. You might want to find a clip of the entire song because it is terrific.
I went through a period a little while back of deep depression. To lift myself up I started listening to Johnny. I developed such a strong obsession! I've read both of his autobiographies three times each and have really delved into his faith and survival.
Kristofferson was an amazing man. He was a Rhodes scholar, star athlete, award-winning writer, helicopter pilot, West Point graduate, and gave his guaranteed future up to go to Nashville to be a singer/songwriter, getting cut off by his family for doing it, despite the fact that he couldn’t really sing. After failing to get Johnny Cash to listen to his demos, he had a helicopter-flying friend land on Cash’s front lawn, where he stepped out, walked to the front porch, and rang the doorbell. Cash opened his TV show the next week with “Sunday Morning Coming Down”.
Hello, i happen to be a member of the same faith as you website, and there have been time in my life when I haven't lived up to the values that I hold dear. It's that I thought about this song and how a sunday morning can seem very lonely.Even the sky doesn't seem as blue. When you're doing things you shouldn't. thank you for reviewing this.I wish you and your family the very best and a happy new year.
Have loved this song since first encountering it at karaoke...a local K regular, a woman, sang it, and it was wonderfully haunting. She sang the original Kristofferson version, which is slower and much more emotionally hard-hitting as a consequence. Have a listen to that. There are chimes near the end of the song, off the beat, during the bit about the lonely bell, that get to me every time, even when I'm singing it myself...
Kris was steadfast in getting Johnny to take a look at this song. He tried, many times, to contact Johnny, with no luck. When he thought he had tried enough, he took things a little more into his own hands. He chartered a helicopter in Nashville, has it flown out to Johnny's estate. They landed, not far from the house. Johnny came out of the house and Kris had finally gotten the song to Johnny, to listen to.
As folks said, check out Johnny Cash's full version. There's a piece where the narrator stands outside a Sunday School and listens to the kids singing. The rumor is that after Kris wrote this song, he wanted so badly to get it into Johnny's hands and persuade him to record it that he rented a helicopter to fly over Johnny's house (bypassing the security gate etc) and drop him in the yard with a demo tape.
LOL - SAS??? My husband was a SAS programmer WAY back in the day - had NO idea it was still around! Keep selling it! Video: as others have said, that was only half the song - find Johnny singing it. Then, you'll be happy! Kris was SUCH a marvelous writer. Your interpretation was nicely moving.
Well needless to say both these guys lived this song so there is a lot of emotion, when they sing it. There is probably a full version out there with just Kris when he was younger.
We lived in Nashville. a block from Music Row in the 70's, a was a singer & my husband was a struggling songwriter - This song still makes me cry due to the realism this song evokes!! Kris's version is slower & more poignant!!! This is NOT the whole song - it is much longer!!!! Kris's song paint complete pictures - he is a writer but also a 'wordsmith!!!
Kris has one called “pilgrim chapter 33” which has genius lyrics he said he wrote it about his friends including Johnny Cash. Also ones you should do with your wife “help me make it through the night” and “loving her was easier”
Oh man ... This song! I love this song but other Kris' original album version which was much slower and much more moody in exactly the way the lyrics set it. I do like Johnny's version but also the version performed by Ray Price. Three very different versions, all of them great. I hope you'll react to Kris' original album version. It's the whole song, of course, but he really pulls you into the loneliness, lostness, and ghost-like existence. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. Great song!
@SebsDuran great reaction! For some reason, even though the genre is different - something tells me you would very much enjoy Dan Fogelburg, "Same Old Lang Syne" about a holidy encoutner with an old flame or "Leader of the Band" about Dan's dad. Dan has some quality of voice and the story lines are very emotive. Add a tissue box.Also... RIP Dan!
I love the lyrics of this song. I've always had a "lonely feeling" about Sundays, even as a child....and I'm not an alcoholic, just a normal person. Could you include a reaction to Michael Bolton's " How Am I Gonna Live Without You." Michael Bolton was such an icon in the 80's.
Kris and Johnny also sang a lot together in The Highwaymen (a country supergroup), along with Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Unfortunately, all of them except Willie are deceased. Since I see that you haven't covered this group yet, I highly recommend it! You'll enjoy it and so will we! My favorites are: 'The Highwaymen - On the Road Again (American Outlaws: Live at Nassau Coliseum, 1990)', 'City of New Orleans (American Outlaws: Live at Nassau Coliseum, 1990)'. Please, Please, Please!
They only performed half of the song. You should do The Highwaymen at Nassau Coliseum, live, for the whole song. Kris practically idolized Cash; Cash gave many an unknown artist spots on his show, and many went on to be famous. Kris was one of the most prolific songwriters of our time. John Prine is another.
Just watched this for the first time along with you! I didn't see that one live on TV....but most likely missed it because I was watching something else....!!! LMAO! (Maybe Neil Diamond...) But I have watched both of them separately on TV shows! I have SO many suggestions for you that would blow.you.away! Happy New Year! I'll keep an eye out for new content here, that's for sure!
Kris wrote this song, but many people tend to think that it was Johnny that wrote it. Kris have written some of the best songs ever written, he gavve them to other artists, like this one and Me and Bobby McGee that Janis Joplin made huge, Elvis made a cover that is AMAZING of Kris song Why me Lord, you need to react, or listen to it...
You need to realize what Sundays use to be like. The Blue Laws were in place, families went to church together and we spent Sundays together as a family. No friends or going out. We might go for a Sunday drive and talked to each other . No computers, no cell phones no chores. Sunday newspaper had the big cartoon section. Hardly any traffic because we stayed home as a family, or visit family. "Sunday Morning Coming Down " as the song goes.
In your country journey, you need to check out Patsy Cline. I'd begin with two of her best, " Sweet Dreams," and " I Fall to Pieces." You'll become an instant fan of her once you hear her. Enjoy your show so very much !!
Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar. If you don't know what that is, it's a select group of smart and/or connected young people who are being groomed to run the country or a corporation. He decided that he didn't want to be a part of that and that he really just wanted to write and play his music. And smoke with Willy, of course. Weird to think about.

My favorite song. They (both Johnny and Kris) wrote and performed many great songs together, but this is the one speaks to my soul.

Great comment-couldnt have said it better myself. Thank you!
I've listened to this song hundreds of times and it always touches my heart. Kris was a remarkable songwriter. Kris and Johnny are magic
Grew up listening to my dad play guitar and singing Johnny Cash songs. Was never a fan but recently I have been enjoying JC and appreciating him more.
Rip Kris. I’ve loved you for dozens of years. Miss you too Johnny.
And it echoed through the canyon, like a disappearing dream of yesterday.......you can beat lyrics like that 😢✌️❤️
Both of those guys are just amazing. ❤
I listen because you take the time to look at background and the time of the presentation and context. Love it.
This song resonates with anyone who has ever been down and lonely. Country is as real as it gets.
Check out Janis Joplin doing another Kristofferson song, "Me and Bobby McGee"
I met Johnny Cash when I was a teenager....a very gracious man.
I went through a period a little while back of deep depression. To lift myself up I started listening to Johnny. I developed such a strong obsession! I've read both of his autobiographies three times each and have really delved into his faith and survival.
Willie, Waylon, Kris & Johnny - the 4 highwaymen
Kristofferson was an amazing man. Back in the day, the term "stoned" often meant drunk. Today, people usually think of marijuana, but back then, it probably just meant drunk.
Naw, dude. These guys def knew about Mary-j-wanna.
@sealawj It's not that they didn't know about it. But the song is about drinking and the term "stoned" back then was often used to mean drunk.
I've heard each of them perform this song separately, but this is the first time I heard them do it together. That was something special.

You are so awesome. I love this song ❤
Always loved Kris Kristofferson. To be honest, he doesn’t have the best voice but he is a fantastic song writer.
Two of the best to ever do it.
This is an amazing song.
Kristofferson was one of the greatest American songwriters of all time. I miss him--Gotta do Me and Bobby McGee
Have loved this song since first encountering it at karaoke...a local K regular, a woman, sang it, and it was wonderfully haunting. Also known as the greatest hangover song of all time.

One of my all time favorite songs, love the Shawn Mullins version too.
I watched the original television broadcast. I was alone and I identified with about every line. Ended up sobbing after hearing this.

I clicked because my dad loves Johnny Cash and Kris died recently and I love this song
Been enjoying North salt Lake city at the truckstop. Watching reactions, waiting to unload tonight. A lil bit of snow flurries

I grew up with them all😊 and he is very good happy New years may have bless you throughout your year
You mentioned the Christmas song, "I heard the bells on Christmas day" - Johnny Cash does a wonderful version of that, too.
Just watched this for the first time along with you! I didn't see that one live on TV....but most likely missed it because I was watching something else....!!! LMAO! (Maybe Neil Diamond...) But I have watched both of them separately on TV shows!

Nobody wanna think about this ish first thing Sunday..
I don’t know if you’ve found The Highway Men but I highly recommend you do 😊

It is a longer song but they shortened it for the show.
song was loved! kris wrote
" Me And Bobby Mcgee" Sung by Janis Joplin. Try that one.
Not taking anything away from Johnny Cash.. But Kris.. wrote this song.. and many more.. So much talent.. they are both missed.
I love your reactions.Love Johnny and Kris.Janice Joplin sings Kris Kristofferson song me and Bobby Mcgeep some videos and songs you should react to.Diamond Rio believe ,Toby Keith don’t let the old man in,
Sunday sidewalks in the old days were so quiet. No stores theatres or restaurants open with few people outside and hardly any cars on the roads.
Outlaw Country Era ,, Nashville didn't want it but then so they went around it .. Lonesome On'ry and Mean /Waylon Jennings chek it out ..
Don’t forget that he wrote Me and Bobby McGee too. He used to date Janis Joplin.
Listen to Kris’s original, it is a longer song, this is a condensed version, although this is good, when Kris does his own version, I think it’s much better!❤
Lynn Anderson sang it too
Please check out Steve Forbert!
Anything from the Jackrabbit Slim album; especially Jan 23-30, 1978, or Complications, or even Romeo's Tune, which made the top 20.
You won't be disappointed 😊
Please treat yourself and find the full song. Kris Kristofferson writing at his very best.
The Highwaymen Willie Nelson, JOHNNY CASH, WAYLON JENNINGS, AND KRIS KKRISTOFFERSON.
I love this song. You need to listen to the entire song. This makes me glad that I have Jesus as my Savior. I don't feel this despair.
You missed mine BONNIE RAITT LOVE ME LIKE A MAN 🙏🏻 I LIVE IN ASHEVILLE AND WE GOT HIT HARD FROM HURRICANE HELENE 🌀
Hello sebs hope you and Ali and your family are doing well hey sebs if you don’t mind me asking did your wife Ali have her baby yet or if not please tell her I’m praying for you guys daily . Hope you guys have a happy new year 2025. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉ever great reactions every time I see them. I suffer from diabetic neuropathy in both feet but I try to stay positive day to day.
There is more to the song, but, often time was a factor on variety shows and you would get abridged versions of songs.
Listen to Kris and Rita Coolidge singing "Help Me Make It Through The Night"
Hi Seb, Happy New Year Ya'll, should check out Dale Watson "WHERE DO YOU WANT IT" or Tony Joe White " POLK SALAD ANNIE" OR EARL THOMAS CONLEY "HONOR BOUND "
Ragged old Flag is awesome 🇺🇸❤️🙏
This is only part of the full song. Look for Johnny Cash singing the full version...
Even better - live performance of the Highwaymen at Nassau Coliseum. Kris & Johnny do the whole song together. It's my favorite version.
Keep watching, he pulls up the third verse in the video.
@@ahwhite2022 Yes, Sebs did pull up the lyrics. But Kris and Johnny didn’t play it.
React to the Cash recording because verses were left out in this was short for the TV show!
please listen to Good Christian Soldier by Kris Kristofferson. He wrote it after serving in Vietnam
Perkins in most likely the person in the background.
Unfortunately the song is way longer. This was about half of it. Worth checking out the full version by Kris. The tempo suits the song better too
Nevermind, I see now you got to it. Thank you
There’s a second verse.
This was the short version. They left out at least 2 verses. Church bells and park.
It is way longer, they cut it short because it was a Christmas show...and well...
I prefer Kris's version on his album tbh. It has another stanza to it, they shortened it for TV
please do Tim Mcgraw Mary and Joseph u will love this song
That song is way longer and the recorded version by Cash is so much better.
That was not the full song.
