First, thank you for your time in teaching us this, Sir. I'm a novice to astronomy and bird watching. It has always caught my attention and finally made it my retirement hobby. I know this is an older posting, but if you kindly have time to do so, I'd would like to know exactly how to measure to obtain the maximum output on my new telescope, and wouldthis piece be a good match for my unit, It is a Celestron omni 102. Bought it at Costco on sale, so I took the opportunity. Best regards.
I've always thought that was a beautiful telescope and have considered buying it to add a refractor to my collection. What eypeieces do you already have with it?
Thank you for your reply, Sir. Yes, at the time of purchase, I didn't have any knowledge or experience on how to use the telescope, and am currently trying to slowly get the hang of things. The telescope came with a 20mm and 10mm. Since then, I have purchased an Astromaster accessory kit from the same brand (model 94307); which it comes with a 2x lens, also with a 15mm and a 6mm eyepiece, along with different color filters (not idea how to use them, yet). I will continue to watch your videos and try to learn as much as I can. Once again, thank you!
@@LateNightAstronomy it’s 7-21mm I have the full set of bst starguider ed eyepieces they go for 50 pounds each and have 16mm eye relief and 66 field of view! Excellent for the money!
Brilliant video! Have you ever heard/used the Celestron inspire 100AZ refractor telescope before? Just wondering 🙌 I'm getting that telescope on Christmas this year and I'm soo excited! It's a perfect, medium sized, basic telescope I've ever found on websites for me. and definitely going to be loads better than my 'broken' Meade 600az Infinity telescope (I think that's the name of the telescope I got) 🔭😁
I had a really bad experience with celestron. Apparently their cheaper beginner products are "hobby killers" and the one I had definitely was. I couldn't track targets in the sky and the controls were horrible. I was afraid it was me being a beginner and not knowing how to use it but I when I got my next scope I learned it quickly.
I have not heard of that telescope but the design and look of it are really cool! My first telescope was a refractor (not as nice as the one you are looking to get) and I got some good use out of it! I own a number of Celestron products and have found them to be a solid company to buy from! Keep me updated on things and clear skies!
@@LateNightAstronomy They do make those killer RASA scopes. It's possible I got a bad design, even the best companies have misses now and again. For all I know that article was written by some disgruntled astronomer lol.
I just picked up the inspire 100az, and it's not bad, tripod has a bit of movement, takes a bit to get use too, from what I read u will need to upgrade the eye piece . I think this zoom eye piece will help this scope a lot and also a few filters, I would recommend a svbony barlow if on a budget. Hope this helps .
I used a Zoom EP to give me variety of magnifications and FOV to show me what i like, and what is useful. I did a celestron 24-8mm...and whave ive discovered is that i use a 24mm for 90% of my targets, so i def want a good 20-24mm ep with a huge FOV. When the planets are back in the night sky, i plan to get a good planetary EP like 6mm with decent FOV. However, i will always recomend a zoom EP to people looking to buy their first EP without breaking the bank on the "wrong" eye piece
I've got the 7-21mm and 10-30mm with a Newtonian 114mm and they don't focus. Other no-zoom lens works perfectly. Maybe i'm ignoring a ocular-physical condition
@@LateNightAstronomy Its a celestron powerseeker eq114. Thanks for your answers, Did you mean 'exterder' as a barlow x2 o x3?. Have always nice skies night, Master @LateNightAstronomer
@@placeofjose1 It sounds like the focal point of those eyepieces isn't working with the focal point of your telescope. Sometimes a simple extension tube is need. Make sure the eyepiece won't fall but try to slowly move it towards you when it's in the focuser. Adjusting that height and seeing things as more sharp might tell you that it just need an adapter to have it sit higher in the focuser.
How did your filter fit on the eyepiece? Did it screw in all the way. I have Zhumell filters and it feels like the threads are wrong on the SVBONY 7-21mm eyepiece.
Great review thanks Quick question does this have threads under the eye cup? Like the zoom eyepiece by celestron I'm thinking about eyepiece projection for a dslr
Should work fine with the 80eq but I wouldn't suggest using it with a barlow lens. You can always give it a try but you would almost be double stacking Barlows with how this zoom lens works.
I bought a old 102 mm Celestron... when I used this adjustable lens everything was foggy hazy... I blamed this eyepiece...turns out the objective was in backwards and everything was chain smoker dirty even after initial cleaning... it's a awesome EP... Though a 24.5mm was max for the setup the scope easily went to EP 7mm...your ON the moon... 7mm is pushing it for Saturn... it moves by fast but its big and viewable... Eqip. Celestron 102mmX1000FL using a 5x Barlow and this EP
Forgive me, but I'm confused about your last calculation with the max number of the eyepiece being 21mm. Can you tell me how you came up with the 171 number using this adjustable eyepiece? I have a 650mm with a max eyepiece of 25mm. This gives me a total of 26. My diameter is 6" X 30 = 180. Did I miss anything?
My telescopes has a 1,200mm focal length so at 7mm it gives me a magnification of 171x and a 21mm it gives me a magnification of 57x. 1,200/7 and 1,200/21
You know they have a wide angle 7-21 now? I think 40-65* This will probably be the one I go for. That and a 2X Barlow for the higher magnification (3.5) I think will do it.
Nice video cheers you just convinced me to get this one over the celestron one which was 8-24 but was much more expensive I hope the quality from them isn't too much different this one seems awesome for the price and 7mm to 21 is is still higher more in terms of its magnification power is that correct ? New guy here still trying to work stuff out lol awesome channel !
I think as an early purchase for your eyepiece collection you made a good choice. Hope you enjoy it and let me know if have any questions along the way! Clear skies!
I can't say having not tried that one out! I own several Celestron products and find them to be high quality as well. My guess is that they are very similar in design and performance based off of what I have read about it!
I have been looking at it to buy. Great video will it work with a celestron127 powerseeker, also been looking at a 130 reflector atf5. The price is good also 49dollars or less, saw it for 44$.
That's an interesting idea. The only difficult would be making sure they both matched the same magnification. That would be easy for their lowest and higher power, but difficult for anything in-between.
Hi , I just got a Tasco Reflector Telescope as a gift and I bought a 90° erecting prism for the scope but it seems like it does not work it looks blurry and I need some advice on what can I do or buy for it, because the images look upside down. The focal length on my scope is 500mm and objective Diameter is 114mm. I’m not sure if I bought the right one. Thank you. By the way your video are great.
@@LateNightAstronomy Yes it came with SR4mm, H10mm, H25mm and a Barlow lens 3X. But if I look around everything is upside down. So this type of telescope don’t work with 90° prism?
Purchased this lens. Love it, but am trying to figure it out in combination with their 5x barlow lens. Image seems possibly too magnified as image is blurry after attempting to focus
Yeah, a 5x barlow lens will be overkill and lead to blurry images in almost every case. You could try a 2x or 3x barlow lens but in my experience it's best to use it just by itself.
@@ntbarone Honestly, a 5x barlow lens is not gonig to be useable for more of anything. I would look to get a solid 2x barlow lens (I've got another video on that topic too) You could use that 2x barlow for any future eyepiece and possibly even your zoom eyepeice. Most barlows I've bought are around 25 to 40 dollars.
the baader is a brilliant eyepiece, as is the svbony, but the baader is darker and has more contrast and nebulosity. although for the average beginner the difference may go completely unnoticed so the extra £100 may be completely wasted. to someone who has been into astronomy for a couple years and has a fair bit of experience with astronomy, the baader is worth the extra penies.
You could do that but the more glass you introduce the more imperfections you will get. I personally would recommend not stacking a barlow onto a zoom eyepiece but you can always give it a shot.
It turns out that SvBONY produces 5 zoom eyepieces. A $150 3-8mm 6 element zoom eyepiece SV215 with a 56 degree field of view (FOV) and 10mm eye relief. A $40 7-21mm 6 element zoom eyepiece SV135 with a 57-40 degree FOV and 18-16.3mm eye relief (this is the one you tested). A $40 10-30mm 5 element zoom eyepiece SV170 with a 51-33 FOV and 17-18.5mm eye relief. A $64 8-24mm 7 element zoom eyepiece SV171 with a 56-38 degree FOV and 18-19.5mm eye relief. And a $80 7.2-21.6mm 7 element zoom eyepiece SV191 with a 65-42 degree FOV and 18-20mm eye relief (this is the one I bought).
I have a question. I bought a zoom eyepiece (7-21mm) but I need to take the telescope focus all way in and it still isn't totally in focus. Do I need an extension tube? That seems backwards to me. Wouldn't an extension tube move the zoom eyepiece further away?
@@t.j.144 That's odd. My guess is that your specific telescope is designed more for astrophotography which impact the focus distance on something like this zoom eyepiece.
The so-called in-focus on some refractors isn't short enough, so the only solution is to add a Barlow lens to bring the focus point back to the eyepiece. It seems counter intuitive but its the same problem as when using a binoviewer on short focus travel refractor tubes. SCTs generally don't have a problem - not sure about Newtonians as that will depend on how close to the secondary mirror you can get with the 'in-focus' travel and not cross into the light cone to the main mirror.
It is my number one suggestion for a first "serious" scope to get into amateur astronomy. I've located all of the Messier objects and love it for planetary observing as well.
@@LateNightAstronomy its come around that time of year where u can see Jupiter and Saturn in the night sky and i used the eyepiece i have now for it, but it was still blurry
Imagine if they also introduce an ADJUSTABLE barlow lens too? isnt that amazing? no more replaceable of eyepiece magnification and also for barlow multi switch
This zoom works well with a barlow lens, if your focal length is long you may not need one and hit the maximum magnification your telescope is capable of before going into empty magnification territory and don't forget that the atmosphere limits how high a telescope can go and this can change from hour to hour, day to day. 2X Barlow lenses where the nose piece screws off, these are usually black at the top, silver in the middle and black at the bottom can convert the 7mm setting with the nosepiece at 1.5X to 4.6mm and 3.5mm with the 2X. One example, a Skywatcher Heritage 130p has the ability to go up to 260X under excellent atmospheric conditions, likely 200X or less most of the time. It has a focal length of 650mm, at the 7mm setting it only gives 93X which is ok for many things but not enough for for others so in the case a barlow lens would be useful for the moon and planets giving 134X with a 1.5X nosepiece and 186X with a 2X barlow, reasonable. Another example, the 7mm gives 143X in my 8inch, with the 1.5X nosepiece, 218X, not bad but i can go higher quite often with the 2X to 286X, rarely go higher due to atmospheric limits. Stacking barlow lenses is a valid way to increase magnification, many expensive eyepieces contain a barlow but they call it a smyth lens and those same companies sell barlow lenses and telecentric lenses to use with them or eyepieces sold by other brands.
If you are looking through a telescope most things will probably appear upside down because of the telescopes mirror. For space ir doesn't really matter, for landscape or bird watching that can be annoying.
I bought this eyepiece and looked at the sun and a black hole opened up and now I'm inside please help. Just kidding no sun gazing and I just got it and have not tried it because I'm waiting for the sun to go around to da other side of da Earth.
In my opinion, Svbony is a tricky brand... it costs a bit less than "normal" APO scopes, but the quality is much poorer.... worst brand ever, great dissappointment.... never buy this brand again!

Good video great explanation as well. 👍👍
Glad you liked it! Let me know if you have any questions on anything in the future! Clear Skies!
I bought the svbony sv191 very stiff and hard to adjust the zoom.decided to get the starguider zoom much better in my opinion!
I'm glad you found a nice zoom eyepiece. What focal lengths does the starguider zoom cover?
@@LateNightAstronomy it’s 7-21mm I have the full set of bst starguider ed eyepieces they go for 50 pounds each and have 16mm eye relief and 66 field of view! Excellent for the money!
Brilliant video! Have you ever heard/used the Celestron inspire 100AZ refractor telescope before? Just wondering 🙌
I'm getting that telescope on Christmas this year and I'm soo excited!
I own this eyepiece since easter. I can testify that this is a HONEST REVIEW.
Thank you very much!
Do you like it?
I used a Zoom EP to give me variety of magnifications and FOV to show me what i like, and what is useful. I did a celestron 24-8mm...and whave ive discovered is that i use a 24mm for 90% of my targets, so i def want a good 20-24mm ep with a huge FOV. When the planets are back in the night sky, i plan to get a good planetary EP like 6mm with decent FOV. However, i will always recomend a zoom EP to people looking to buy their first EP without breaking the bank on the "wrong" eye piece
Great insight and I agree with you on that next purchase for a more "premium" planetary eyepiece!
Just bought one! No, my telescope hasn't arrived yet, but I bought one of these :D
Yeah, I did the math, and it should be just fine for my telescope though :)
@@ZopcsakFeri Excellent!
I've got the 7-21mm and 10-30mm with a Newtonian 114mm and they don't focus. Other no-zoom lens works perfectly. Maybe i'm ignoring a ocular-physical condition
What telescope do you own. Some require a focus extender to achieve focus?
Most eyepieces have standard thread filters for 1.25 inch or 2 inch filter.
Great review thanks
Quick question does this have threads under the eye cup?
Like the zoom eyepiece by celestron
I'm thinking about eyepiece projection for a dslr
Thanks! The only threads I have noticed are on the bottom for 1.25 inch filters.
Nice review, thanks. After 30 years using fixed eyepieces, I'd probably be taking it out to change magnification. :))
It is definitely a different kind of experience zooming in and out on objects versus switching out the eyepiece.
awesome video thx
No problem! Hope it helped you out a bit!
Will this zoomable lens work with a barrow lens. And will it work good for the celestron powerseeker 80EQ?
Glad to hear you had a great experience with it.
Also is there a difference in calculation between refractor and reflector? Thanks.
No, the calculations will be the same. Good question!
1,200/7 and 1,200/21
I'm considering this or the Celestron 8 24 zoom. Do you think this is a better option?
I have read good things about both. I would go with the most affordable one you can find out of these two.
@@LateNightAstronomy thank you 👍
Does this have click stops like the Baader zoom?
No it doesn't
i have a Celestron - AstroMaster 76EQ. will this zoom lens and a 2x barlow lens improve it.
I probably wouldn't use it with a 2xbarlow but this zoom eyepiece by itself should work well for you.
thanks for you video.. Question: is this piece an erecting eyepiece?
I don't believe it is but Svbony does sell this eyepiece with an diagonal adapter for erecting images if you are interested!
You know they have a wide angle 7-21 now? I think 40-65* This will probably be the one I go for. That and a 2X Barlow for the higher magnification (3.5) I think will do it.
That is good to know. I think that might improve upon some of the issues I had with eyepiece.
Would the celestron be of better quality ?
I can't say having not tried that one out! I own several Celestron products and find them to be high quality as well. My guess is that they are very similar in design and performance based off of what I have read about it!
I have been looking at it to buy. Great video will it work with a celestron127 powerseeker, also been looking at a 130 reflector atf5. The price is good also 49dollars or less, saw it for 44$.
Yeah, it should work well with the Powerseeker.
I was thinking that a couple of these in an Orion GiantView would provide a convenient way of changing magnifications.
That's an interesting idea. The only difficult would be making sure they both matched the same magnification. That would be easy for their lowest and higher power, but difficult for anything in-between.
@@LateNightAstronomy That's a good consideration. It might become fiddly if the two zoom eyepieces weren't perfectly in sync.
Se puede utilizar con un barlow x2
No usaría un barlow 2x esto
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice👍
Hi , I just got a Tasco Reflector Telescope as a gift and I bought a 90° erecting prism for the scope but it seems like it does not work it looks blurry and I need some advice on what can I do or buy for it, because the images look upside down. The focal length on my scope is 500mm and objective Diameter is 114mm. I’m not sure if I bought the right one. Thank you. By the way your video are great.
My guess is you won't need an erecting prism for a reflector. Did any eyepieces come with it?
@@LateNightAstronomy Yes it came with SR4mm, H10mm, H25mm and a Barlow lens 3X. But if I look around everything is upside down. So this type of telescope don’t work with 90° prism?
@@gladysbruno2190 Correct. You would typically only use a prism with a refractor, not a reflector.
What is the name of the Telescope is it Dobsonian? and how many inches?
It's the Orion XT8i Dobsonian.
first thing I noticed is YOU STOLE MY T-Shirt
You must be a person of good taste!
would this work with a celestron astromaster 102az
Yeah, it should work fine with that.
How you can look in to moon and record together in live view?
I had my cell phone connected to the eyepiece while it was zooming in to make the video.
@@LateNightAstronomy do you know where that 5x barlow would be suitable?
@@ntbarone Honestly, a 5x barlow lens is not gonig to be useable for more of anything. I would look to get a solid 2x barlow lens (I've got another video on that topic too) You could use that 2x barlow for any future eyepiece and possibly even your zoom eyepeice. Most barlows I've bought are around 25 to 40 dollars.
Thank you so much. Just purchased both 2x and 3x
@@ntbarone Excellent. Let me know how they work out and anymore questions you may have.
Cool but I'll stick with prime lenses, thanks
Probably the best call quality wise for most scopes but the zoom lenses are fun to use!
how compares it with the Baader Zoom Hyperion?
Search UA-cam, there's at least two comparison videos that I remember watching before buying this eyepiece.
I don't know but as was mentioned, I'm sure there are other reviews of that product out on the internet!
the baader is a brilliant eyepiece, as is the svbony, but the baader is darker and has more contrast and nebulosity. although for the average beginner the difference may go completely unnoticed so the extra £100 may be completely wasted. to someone who has been into astronomy for a couple years and has a fair bit of experience with astronomy, the baader is worth the extra penies.
@@simoncarlisle7368 Great advice!!!!
could you use a 5x barlow with a .5 reducer?, would that reduce it to 2.5 ?.
Yes. They have greatly expanded there product lineup over the past two years.
Can you use it with a barlow?
You could but it is pretty much already a Barlow lens built into an eyepiece.
Monta anche sui cannocchiali serie sv?
Si adatta a qualsiasi portaoculari di dimensioni 1,25 pollici.
I have a question. I bought a zoom eyepiece (7-21mm) but I need to take the telescope focus all way in and it still isn't totally in focus. Do I need an extension tube? That seems backwards to me. Wouldn't an extension tube move the zoom eyepiece further away?
What telescope are you using it with?
@@LateNightAstronomy 120mm Orion refractor
@@LateNightAstronomy 120mm Orion refractor
Could this eye peice work with helios 5.2 quantumn binos
I suppose it could but I've never tried out a zoom eyepiece on a pair of binoculars before.
Can i use this one with a focal reducer 0.5x?
Sure. Should work fine with it. Let me know how it works out for you if you give it a try.
Sir how many telescope have a used mm i don't know English
Do you own a telescope?
I have a astromaster 70 AZ telescope
How far can you reach through your 8" dobsonian, because I'm planning to buy one
It is my number one suggestion for a first "serious" scope to get into amateur astronomy. I've located all of the Messier objects and love it for planetary observing as well.
Me? About 1.5 arm lengths 😂
21 mm on this is better than the eyepiece that came with my telescope’s highest
I'm glad to hear that. What are you enjoying views of right now?
@@LateNightAstronomy its come around that time of year where u can see Jupiter and Saturn in the night sky and i used the eyepiece i have now for it, but it was still blurry
Like the video now
Baader, pentax, televue all make zoom eyepieces if your pockets go that deep!. were 200 to 300 dollars.
Those are some great brands! Too much money for me right now but amazing quality from what I've read.
Imagine if they also introduce an ADJUSTABLE barlow lens too? isnt that amazing? no more replaceable of eyepiece magnification and also for barlow multi switch
Good thought!
Is it compatible with a Barlow Lens? :D
Yes, but you would almost be double stacking barlow lenses at that point. I would suggest not using a barlow for this to get the best images possible.
'
yeaa see that hot air on the moon during day time...
or air ozone on the earth with air wave
The atmosphere is always the enemy to observing.
Did anyone else see something in that moon shot that was weird?
bout to put one of these in a Barlow and put it to the max 🤣
Let me know how it turns out. You may see farther than anyone has before :)
Wow! Amazing eye piece 👍
Thank you for Guidelines sir😊
Most welcome 😊
I bought this and when I looked through it everything was upside down. Is that how its supposed to be or is it broken or not right.
If you are looking through a telescope most things will probably appear upside down because of the telescopes mirror. For space ir doesn't really matter, for landscape or bird watching that can be annoying.
Молодец! 🎉

you don't realize just how fast the moon is moving, until you try to zoom in and hold on a area!.
So true!
Actually, the earth is the one that’s moving so fast
I bought this eyepiece and looked at the sun and a black hole opened up and now I'm inside please help. Just kidding no sun gazing and I just got it and have not tried it because I'm waiting for the sun to go around to da other side of da Earth.

In my opinion, Svbony is a tricky brand... it costs a bit less than "normal" APO scopes, but the quality is much poorer.... worst brand ever, great dissappointment.... never buy this brand again!
I've only used a few of there products, primarily this eyepiece and a ligh pollution filter for Astrophotography. Thanks for sharing your experience with everyone.
