Thanks for having me on the pod! Promotions are always a hot button topic and I’m glad to weigin with real life stories from advising hundreds of companies from startups to MNCs. Hoping everyone gets the job they deserve ❤
Thank you for sharing this helpful episode. It’s really important that employees speak up when they are looking for a pay raise. Even if it’s not successful, at least they tried. I love the part on keeping an excel/document on all your past achievements so that when it comes to appraisal, you have things to mention to your manager
i just wanted to say that, one of the reason i enjoy watching the hop pod, because it feels like im watching my friends, rather than some elitist celebs looking down on us poor plebs. Perhaps it has to do with casual mannerism, even way of talking.
Is it possible to ask for a pay raise in sectors that are related to the government (e.g., social service sector that relies on government funding)? How realistic is it?
Well, from my experience working in senior leadership in a university that is 70% funded by the government, we did have quite an enlightened and commercial approach to pay. I did manage to fight for off cycle promotions and keep employees who were flight risk as well as put in place additional “market rate” allowances for high performers with valuable skills. So of course it depends on many factors, how much value add you’re perceived to have, how supportive / influential your boss is, but it is not a blanket impossibility.
What we can do: Promote or Jump and Stay Relevant What Govt can do: Recalibrate EP salary yearly Understand: Current Business sentiment Manager’s agenda (maximising productivity with minimal resources)
Ask for a pay raise in 2021, like wtf how a music teacher that has to burn every day in a school gets net less than 2K after deductions, boss said no. I tendered my resignation straightaway, be my own boss.
Thanks for this episode and your sharing Crystal! Difficult topic but not impossible (speaking from personal experience). The first step - to ask - is always the hardest. Always appreciate your sharing these tidbits with the community. 🫰
