talented + image fit the group + hardwork/improvement (in evaluation) + scheduled debut. I mean kyuhyun was so suju, very talented, and he debuted after suju debuted too, I heard ryeowook also trained for a short time and he's original member. Chen and Baekhyun actually only trained for 5 months, they said that in radio show. add the info that theyre auditioned and accepted in May 2011 before choosen as adebut team aka fixed members in november 2011, the rest of the months was them preparing the album etc and debut in EXO in April 2012

I highly doubt being a trainee is all sugar and spice, especially at SM. They can't get on TV and tell the truth so they have to smile and be humble. How can they not feel at least a little bit of resentment or disappointment?? Baekhyun and D.O trained for a few years while the other members trained longer than it takes to finish university. I bet they had doubts about debuting. Can your love for music be 7 years strong??

I read a blog written by an ex-SM trainee. The guy said beakhyun came in as a level 4 trainee which means he's very talented (FYI there r 6 levels, and 4 or 5 subcategories like singing, acting, dancing, instruments, etc to categorize a trainee's skills). Suho wasn't that talented (I think he began as a level 2 trainee) but he really worked hard to become the person he is now. So for this reason, I respect him the most out of all the members
I'm sure the other members didn't feel too happy about DO and Beakhyun's short training time. But as a group they have to learn to accept new members. Plus without DO and Beakhyun there would not be enough vocals in the group.

some of here tought once you've casted by SM it means you already a trainee of them. They need to audition first like Sehun he auditioned for like 3 times on his first two audition he failed. So stop thinking that SM only looking for looks. (sorry for my english)

yes, because the vocalists are more concentraded on their voice. in those castings, a lot of dancers are practicing for years, for their chance, but they cant sing a single note. as a performer, you need a second talent besides dancing. otherwise youre nothing else then background decoration. thats why they try to rap or at least sing in low notes easy parts. thats a lot of training too for people who never sang before! the vocalists have less training, because they dont perform freestyle. choreographics are easier to learn beside of dancemoves at themselfs. do kyungsoo still hates to dance, but he tries his best at every show and it fits!

I think it's more like, "you, come audition" and then at the audition they are screened for acceptable levels of talent. Looks will get you scouted, but you still have to audition, it's like you're invited to audition

SM is more focused on Looks than Talent, of course they care about talent too, but their more on looks compared to other companies, sm scouting staffs try to find people who are pretty or handsome and encourage them to join SM , they go through the same procedure as anyone else but they have a little more chance of getting in because of the refferal.
it's not just like that they gave him chance but he had to sure his talent front of jury too and for some members like luhan and sehun they were supposed to be ulzzang
lolia Nana Chen and Baekhyun were vocally trained before they become a trainees. And Xiumin got into Exo by singing competition. Sehun had to do 3 auditiona to get in. They all have to have to be good at something to some extend to dmget into SM. Training time probably hepls, but they can't be just good looking and that's it.
there's no way they didn't think about quitting. This interview seems so sugarcoated. you technically give away your youth being a trainee. Even if you love something that much, having to train from dawn till the middle of the night everyday, will tire you out mentally and physically. The uncertainty of not debuting is constantly looming over your shoulders especially when you see people that may be younger than you (shinee and fx) debuting. The stress and the competition is enough to make a person doubt their ability to withstand till the end. You have to have some pretty strong will to have trained for years.
But they weren't trained full time like old american boybands such as Backstreet Boys, NSYNC and Otown. EXO members were casted when they were young but all of them were able to graduate from highschool and Suho even attended college, it wasn't the case for Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. Nick Carter and Justin Timberlake had to quit school and got trained full time, NC still this day he doesn't have a highschool diploma and JT got it by taking a GED test.

Nguyen Lee Well you complained about their trainning courses, but I know they probably got trained but afterschool, they didn't have to quit school like teenagers in american boybands. In one EXO interview, Suho said his parents didn't want him to be SM trainee but finally they let him if he could keep good grades in school. It means he even had time to study. Backstreet Boys quit everything they did, they practiced by day and performed at middle schools and highschools events at night without getting paid. BSB started in 92 and their debut was in 1995.
Well imagine that balancing school and training at the same time. Do you have any idea how strenuous the Korean school system is? They go to school and then head straight to training. There isn't just physical fatigue but mental fatigue as well. I'm not saying that BSB and NSYNC didn't work hard to get where they did because I'm sure they did. I just think that exo made it sound too easy in this video. I'm sure they skip school some days to train full time. With the amount of pressure you're dealing with from school and training wouldn't there be times where you question if all this will pay off in the end? There's times where you'll doubt yourself and wonder if you're even good enough because you're constantly being put on the platter with someone else for comparison. There's so much uncertainty involved. Will I debut or not?
It's just too sugarcoated in my opinion. The way they explained it made it sound like it's a simple flowing process but in reality it isn't like that. There will be rough patches. There is competition. There is insecurities and self doubt.
Nguyen Lee Yes, but at least they didn't have to be afraid getting fired. I'm sure they worked hard but I feel SM runs more like a school tuition than a work place like BSB & NSYNC camp. I read Sehun in the training days used to real closed w/ Kai getting bubble tea together but later they didn't hang out that much because Kai took more dancing classes. It would not the same case w/ BSB & NSYNC. They stayed the same place, got trained the same time, members had to keep up with the group, otherwise they would get fired. Before Brian and Kevin joined BSB, there were 2 other guys but one got fired and one quit. I know SM have intensive training but at least they still kept Suho for 7 years but there is no way Lou Pearlman would do it because time is money.

SM staffs are every where in Korea. I should dance non stop if I go there, maybe I can have a chance like them.. LOL JK

sanwo H. She started training young, that's why. I thinnk she's only 10 years old when she entered jyp and now she's 20. It's really worth it because when you watched twice perf, she's the only one who can really sing. (I mean very good at singing)

After hearing most sm artistes sharing on how they became a trainee (boa, dbsk, suju, snsd, shinee, fx, exo) I think in , most like ppl will get to become a trainee if you get castes on the street or some competition.. Chances are slimmer if you auditioned by yourself unless you practiced long enough like how Kai did..right? Haha.

You guys do know not every audition/scouting story is truly 100% true, yes it can happen, but most get in through personal/close ties/connections. I'm not saying that EXO's or anyother idols' story is false, it just that what are the chances that a person is walking down a street and suddenly a entertainment scout comes to you. Yes, some may get a business card from a person from a company, but it takes numerous amounts of auditions and tests after, to the truly be a "trainee". You mold your lives after this one shot chance that you're not even 50% sure if you'll debut. I love EXO and all, but just saying that "Yeah, I was eating or walking down the --- Street and a scout came up to me" doesn't seem to easy to get scouted. Just my personal account/thoughts about it, sorry for my rambling.

For each audition which has like thousands contestants, SM only calls back 4 max, sometimes even none ( this is for international audition, i guess call back more for korean). I mean if you didn't have people handing out business card, you probably not gonna make it.

For Koreans, they start their new school year at march. So lets say, I'm 17 years old and my birthday is before march, I'll be 19 years old. ( Koreans is one year older than the others technically ) ( 17+1+1=19 ) and if I'm born after march, I'll only be 18 years old and not 19. That's why Kai and sehun is one year in difference although they're born in the same year.
Trains for five years but barely gets any lines in Exo songs.

well, on the spot "scouting' is mostly based on physical appearance but since you'll still undergo training before you actually debut, you can harvest new skills to be a kpop idol. To answer your question, yes anyone w/ a pretty face can be a korean idol but the training is tough and most trainees, regardless of their pretty face, gets kicked out or leave because they don't have talent or the perseverance to gain the skills to be a kpop idol.
I agree with Kiran tho, most people that are scouted are young bc of their circumstances
I think that they look for a pretty face (or just any talent) then have them audition later if they would like to (and I guess Sehun had potential and could dance so they let him in)

I was at the mall with my friends and this lady came up to us and said that we were really pretty (funny cuz im ugly af😂) and she was scouting people and so she gave us a buisness card and told us to audition for modeling,singing, or acting. So yea i guess ppl get scouted based on looks bc we hv nooo talent at all!!

i think its obvious sm's first priority is good looks. first they see your face, think of ways how to make you even prettier for the idol world and only after that they'll be willing to teach you anything: singing, dancing, rapping, etc. as long as you have passion for it. if you don't, they'll just give you some lame rap parts in songs, everybody would still love you bc of your visuals lol. win/win situation.
I thinks vocalists in exo r actually good. Good at singing and good at singing while dancing. This is pretty hard.
No darling, they just ask you to join their auditions. If you pass, you become a trainee. If they think you don't have it, you fail. Sehun himself failed twice. And be a trainee doesn't guarantee you will become an idol. They have monthly/weekly trainee eliminations. Even if you are trained wthin a group, you still can be kicked out . There's a trainee be kicked out from SM right before Exo's debut because SM found D.O who they prefered.

Tu Do - Wrong! That was Jinho from SM The Ballad and Pentagon and he left voluntarily a year after EXO debuted. SM wanted him as a solo artist but he wanted to be in a boy group. They couldn't come to an agreement so he decided to leave. SM did not kick him out! Do you see Jinho now with Pentagon? I think SM is kicking themselves in the ass for not holding on to him. There's also G-Dragon, a former SM trainee too but he left on his own too now look at him. Sorry but SM can be really stupid and shallow.

I believe that Kai went to infamous Saturday audition where anyone can apply and which is the hardest to pass. Taemin and Seulgi also went to that audition - there are many people there so it is very hard to get noticed amongst crowd and wow the judges.. there is also no preliminery elimination to differ those that have potential and visual and those who don’t .... if you are street - casted it means you have basically passed the first round of audition - at least in terms of looks- and you are most likely being invited to the more private audition to check your ability...

because they all got casted at different times and depending on age and how hard you work and the company you are signed to is where your training years will vary for each individual but not as a group because they are accepted individually not as a whole...it is rare it see same training period of members in a group. I hope this helped some and did not confused you even more haha ^_^

@skippyhippo I feel him,although things are really hard and u keep telling urself that its too hard and just give up but ur passion really doesn't let go...I stayed in my school choir ALONE for 6 years just because I love music and I'm even singled out by teachers saying I have to sing better,although its embarrassing and lonely..really passion and music can really bring u far...even now I'm shocked that I endured all those embarrassment and discouraged comments..
