Especially not in hot wheather. The Foreign Legion found that out quick enough and cuttted the tempo of the pace in half; 35 steps per minute. The Prussians/Germans had a pace of 50 steps per minute and this was one of the reasons why the French lost the war of 1870-1871 and nearly in the summer of 1914.
Napoleon's troops left the Camp of Boulogne and march far faster for longer than you said. it Permitted them to encircle then crush the too much audacious General Mack in ULM. French walked so fast, they did a very long travel from Boulogne on the Channel to ULM then to Austerlitz, taking Wien on the road before Austrians nor Russians were able to react. In Austerlitz, despite the facts french troops should have been exhausted (far more than their opponents) and that they were outnumbered by Austro-Russians (65k to 95k), French won a decisive battle.
The reason of the defeat 1870-71 was not the speed of the walk, but the inept strategies and the truly superiority in numbers by the Germans. Also German had modern artillery, german cannons were firing 4 times when french were firing 1 due to the system of chargement by the "culasse" (Germans) instead by the "mouth" (for the French)... Also, France had half of its army in the colonies and hadn't known no true "revolutions" in tactics nor strategies. french had performed in italy and in Crimea and were sitting on their "laurels". Prussians had done true changements in tactics and outplayed clearly the Austrians few time before, it should have been a warning for french, but they didn't care. Then after Napoleon IIIrd was severely beaten and that french republicans took the power, french Marshal Bazaine which had an intact and good army corp decided to surrender without a fight cause he was against the Republic and was hoping that Prussians would put Napoelon III back to power.
The war of 1914, you have 35M french and 65-70M Germans, the Germans put 90% of their troops against the western front cause they were (rightly) think that the most dangerous opponent was France and not Russia. they wanted to put out of the war France in 6 weeks and it's germans which walked faster than the French. It's because the Germans were too much exhausted that a gap appear between 2 part of the german army, it permitted to french army reinforced by few british divisions to win the battle of the Marne 1914.
@@jpc7118 Thank you for this very well informed comment. Indeed the imperial French army performed quite well in the Crimean war. Better than the British. But this was essentially siege warfare, in which the moving of troops wasn't a requirement. Apart from that, the Prussians and Bavarians made good use of their extensive railway network to get their men at the French border rapidly. And they had better artillery as well as artillery tactics.
@@waltertaljaard1488 In fact, in 1870, France was simply not ready for a war with Prussia aka Germany (all german principalties gave many good troops to Bismarck). in the previous years, England, on the base of her usual "balance" foreign policy had changed her mind as Prussia becoming Germany was predicted to become the dominant power in continental Europe. This foreign policy explained why England did so much coalitions till France was beaten in 1792-1815 period. In 1870, France and England had already secret ties, England did all to oppose France to Prussia. But English overrated the french army, and they didn't think they would be beaten that fast. Some Historians said even that they were predicting a draw, with a slight advantage to France and they even imagined that if it was to go either way, after 2 or 3 years of war, when France would be about to collapse, some scenario were involving british troops aside the French... Alas, French difficulties and the difference between the forces in presence suprised British and avoid them to come to help France. This war of 1870-71 announced the "entente cordiale" between France and UK, and the premice of the Great war too.

Pour ce qui est de l'indépendance jamais ça n'arrivera, notre pays c'est la France et pas autre chose bien que je voudrais voir Paris et l’Élysée bruler avec tous ses petits bourgeois dedans et voir nos frontières se clore à nouveau pour préserver notre identité et notre patrimoine des hordes d'immigrés, de toute façon il n'y a plus de boulot pour eux et souvent ils ne s’intègrent plus.

This fine march was introduced to me by the film "The Day of the Jackal". Henceforth, not only this march but quiche Lorraine became my favorite.
Mon rève c'est de voir cette unité de cavalerie de la gendarmerie française donner une aubade et un défilé français sur la place rouge de Moscou !
