How to Make a Forged Medieval Style Broadhead From Steel Rebar

- Forging a Bodkin style target arrowhead - • How to Make a Forged S...
Today I'll be forging a medieval style socketed broadhead. I've been making a lot of arrowheads lately and find that working on several at once helps keep things moving without the downtime of waiting for steel to heat up. Let me know if there are other arrowhead styles you'd like to see!
The finished broadheads are about 3/4" wide with 3/8" sockets and weigh in at around 202 grains each. The finished arrows came out to 600 grains, perfect for a 60 pound longbow.
I built this little charcoal forge by following The King Of Random's aluminum foundry video. Check it out here: • How To Make The Mini M... I'm currently building several different low-cost forges by following UA-cam tutorials. If you want to see me build some of these let me know!
Thanks for watching and enjoy!

I love this video. Ive seen this 1000 times
you are the best in making tools
I recently found your channel after Skallagrim put the link to one of your videos in a comment, and I'm really enjoying your content so far. Keep up the great work.
FANTASTIC Video Nick ! ! ! !
Those are some amazing looking arrowheads
Very thorough job. Nice work.
People say that you don't sound natural on camera, but your content is amazing. Awesome job!
i really like your way of making arrowheads, it is so simple yet impressive. nice work mate.
Your videos are awesome and give courage to forge iron.
Really good tutorial, easy to follow
This is seriously awesome!
I am always impressed by your videos and your friendly, helpful attitude. Thank you for these videos you are one of my favorite UA-cam teachers!
Wow Nick! Those are great! A little "tip" for you. Forge a 4 sided tapered point on the far edge of the anvil and then flatten it out. To get more width on the point. flatten the point on the bias (diagonals) of the 4 sided taper. this will cut down grinding time and reduce wasted steel. This is the way I believe they were traditionally made due to the availability of steel in the middle ages. Keep at it and they'll only get better!
Long taper: +sharpness -width
Short taper: -sharpness +width
Also try clamping the mandrel in a vice!
+The Blazing Bodkin Forge Thank you for the kind words and the tip. I'll give that a try tomorrow!
+BackyardBowyer My video equipment is trash but I will try to make a video (maybe a series) on all kinds of arrowheads! I may even throw in a video on forging a pair of tongs for holding arrowhead sockets. If you want to pursue smithing, I highly recommend you learn to forge tongs. they're like paint brushes to an artist. used for all specific applications and you can never have too many ;)
Evan...
Did you ever do that arrowhead series?
i will certainly make lots of these
I'd like to see more videos on how to make arrow shafts with a router and also some more on how you make your forges. Thank you for all the videos that you make. I really enjoy them!
You are a genius Nick !
Great work !
Like to have you around when society collapses...😁👍
That looks like one 'killa' arrowhead! Amazing.

Nice job Nick. Miss you on youtube.
That is pretty Impressive
Great work Nick! I love the simple yet profound nature of what you do! Thanks...
I imagined it would be far more complicated, thanks for this video!
Nice job. Someone who is more into blacksmithing would have done it with a few perks, but I feel you did a satisfying job on then. :)
This content is tooo good
Great work, I love your videos
Fascinating video! Great use of a cabbage!
Great project!
Those are awesome.
Как всегда супер! :) Ты молодец!

Love your videos. Sadly i live in a city now and I don't really have a place to work on stuff like that now...
Man u r a genius. u should try and sell them. I saw a movie Robin hood with Kevin Cosner, and the guys made a mold and poured the hot metal in it to make the arrow heads, pretty cool. Great video
thanks for sharing man!
awesome vid nick
Thank you for another grate video!
thanks for the tutorial i'm looking to make some basic arrowheads as well, and i'll definately be taking notice of this
Amazing,i'm really loving the videos it just keep getting better and better, thanks nick :)
Nice work, bro.
Very nice video give me something to aspire to
Keep it hotter when you hammer on it. It will make things work faster and you will avoid metal cracking.
Since we can't get schedule 40 pvc in Australia, I'd love to see you do a video where you double-sleeve thinner-walled PVC to make a bow!
You should make a traditional Hawaiian arrowhead but out of steel. That would be so cool.
Lol That hot glue thing made an image pop into my head....
A knight frantically running down a long castle hall, the sounds of death and chaos echo all around him as he pants and keeps hold of an arm dripping with blood...
He reaches a door inscribed with many symbols he neither knows nor cares for, as he clambers in struggling to keep his footing.. He raises his bow and empty quiver and shouts "GREAT WIZARD! We're being slaughtered out there, can you not prepare us more arrows with your mighty magical sap dispenser?! Has the tree of life run dry!? We're doooomed. doooooomed.... wait what? You found a stick? Where? Oh it rolled under your desk?
Thank God, were saved! The kingdom shan't fall this day. What is this mighty magic substance called dear wizard may our children sing of it for eternity?
....
Hot... Glue. ?
Hmm....
TIS HOT GLUE THAT SAVED THE DAY
MADE THE FIENDS ALL RUN AWAY
WE SAW OUR DOOM, BUT IN THIS ROOM WAS HOT GLUE THAT MISSED THE BROOM.
YES HOT GLUE SAVED THE DAAAAAAY."
the end.
I liked this video
Awesome video. thanks for making. keep up the great videos.
Nice Job Nik! Thanks for upload! You make good arrowheads - for real!!! My compliment! Regards from Germany :-)
+Otto Motto Thank you!
That’s the same anvil I started on! Lol
Nice. 👍
it would be awesome to make barbed fork tip arrow heads for bow fishing
skills man!
I think it would be cool if u can make a bronze arrowhead!
Hey Nick, let's see a broadhead with a tang instead of a ferrule :)
Just noticed I have the same bow you used in this video
Thank-You Great Video... Do Some Spoon Arrow Heads Please And Thank-You From Britain
Great video keeps make video
Another excellent tutorial thanks Nick. Can you make A crossbow That shoots ball bearings Preferably marble sized. Or maybe Sling bow arrows do a lot of damage but rocks and marbles are cheap just a thought.

nice videos, inspiration : a kunai of naruto (trowing knife)
can you make a ballista big one
Nice!
You should make a throwing star.
great video, yet again, might have to try this one :D
You should show how to make blowgun broad head darts
Awesome
for your next knifemaking video could you make a BALISONG!
Ficou top bom trabalho.
You should forge a sword. Nothing fancy, just a one handed short sword as a sidearm for an archer ;)
So cool...can u show us how u make the Malay Keris in future?
awesome arrowhead!!! i really enjoy your videos! and also i would like to try this style of broadhead for my atlatl darts
Awesome vid you should try to make a Dane axe head
skills 👍
That is really awesome. Have you tried tempering them, or would that be an unnecessary step in regards of their purpose?
you should try making the arrow heads from the Imortals in the movie 300.
Would you think that the hole on the side oft he arrowhead catches air, reducing accuracy? Could you posssibly fill that with hot glue or something and then just shape out it flush with the rest of the arrowhead?
Interesting vid ^-^
i want it I WANT IT NOW
Can you do a shortbow tutorial video if you haven't already?
Hay bro not bad but try grinding the edges steeper that will offer less residents and they should penetrate deeper
i love your vids keep it up man! i ur my favourite youtuber! :)
Do a budget arrowhead/arrow build using cheap duct tape, dollar store spoons, and wal-mart dowels.
(I make my arrows this way because, well, it's cheap)
Damn, Grant Thompson rest in peace...
Do a video on how you made this forge. I would like to see how you made it.
How did you learn this stuff? Who helped you with book publishing? Great work as always
Make a slide on bow quiver
I love the videos dude. So interesting to watch. :)))
Nick make bod kin arrowheads. there like a target head but thinner and longer.
Could you make a cylinder stop spring for my H&R 32 top break? Nobody has them.
Do you find that the un-welded socket/hot melt glue stands up under use now that you've had these for awhile?
All of the arrows are nice...but how does one intend to carry them in while hunting? Can you try to make a native American style quiver?
I know this is probably near impossible, but maybe u could have a go at forging a butterfly/balisong knife XD
Hey, thats pretty cool. Why don't you make a 3 blade broadhead, or a judo point?
