How to Make a Forged Medieval Style Broadhead From Steel Rebar

  • Forging a Bodkin style target arrowhead - • How to Make a Forged S...
Today I'll be forging a medieval style socketed broadhead. I've been making a lot of arrowheads lately and find that working on several at once helps keep things moving without the downtime of waiting for steel to heat up. Let me know if there are other arrowhead styles you'd like to see!
The finished broadheads are about 3/4" wide with 3/8" sockets and weigh in at around 202 grains each. The finished arrows came out to 600 grains, perfect for a 60 pound longbow.
I built this little charcoal forge by following The King Of Random's aluminum foundry video. Check it out here: • How To Make The Mini M... I'm currently building several different low-cost forges by following UA-cam tutorials. If you want to see me build some of these let me know!
    Thanks for watching and enjoy!

Wow Nick! Those are great! A little "tip" for you. Forge a 4 sided tapered point on the far edge of the anvil and then flatten it out. To get more width on the point. flatten the point on the bias (diagonals) of the 4 sided taper. this will cut down grinding time and reduce wasted steel. This is the way I believe they were traditionally made due to the availability of steel in the middle ages. Keep at it and they'll only get better!
    Long taper: +sharpness -width
    Short taper: -sharpness +width

+BackyardBowyer My video equipment is trash but I will try to make a video (maybe a series) on all kinds of arrowheads! I may even throw in a video on forging a pair of tongs for holding arrowhead sockets. If you want to pursue smithing, I highly recommend you learn to forge tongs. they're like paint brushes to an artist. used for all specific applications and you can never have too many ;)

Lol That hot glue thing made an image pop into my head....
A knight frantically running down a long castle hall, the sounds of death and chaos echo all around him as he pants and keeps hold of an arm dripping with blood...
He reaches a door inscribed with many symbols he neither knows nor cares for, as he clambers in struggling to keep his footing.. He raises his bow and empty quiver and shouts "GREAT WIZARD! We're being slaughtered out there, can you not prepare us more arrows with your mighty magical sap dispenser?! Has the tree of life run dry!? We're doooomed. doooooomed.... wait what? You found a stick? Where? Oh it rolled under your desk?
Thank God, were saved! The kingdom shan't fall this day. What is this mighty magic substance called dear wizard may our children sing of it for eternity?
    ....
    Hot... Glue. ?
    Hmm....
TIS HOT GLUE THAT SAVED THE DAY
MADE THE FIENDS ALL RUN AWAY
WE SAW OUR DOOM, BUT IN THIS ROOM WAS HOT GLUE THAT MISSED THE BROOM.
YES HOT GLUE SAVED THE DAAAAAAY."
    the end.
