ABOUT the Musical, 'A Chorus Line':
The song, What I Did For Love, is one of the main numbers from this musical. A Chorus Line is a musical about Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line. The book was authored by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante, lyrics were written by Edward Kleban, and music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch.
With nineteen main characters, it is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for a musical. The show provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers and the choreographer as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers.
The original Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Buffalo, N.Y. native Michael Bennett, was an unprecedented box office and critical hit, receiving 12 Tony Award nominations and winning nine of them, in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It ran for 6,137 performances, becoming the longest-running production in Broadway history up to that time. It remains the longest running Broadway musical originally produced in the United States, and the fourth longest-running Broadway show ever. The show has enjoyed many successful productions worldwide and was revived on Broadway in 2006.

Sadly, unsophistication is the norm now a days. People are no longer able to appreciate overwhelmingly great talent like this. At least some of her greatness has been recorded. Imagine if it all died with her.

I heard a story told by Barbara Streisand where she had got a free ticket for her Mother and friends to see Barbara in Las Vegas. According to Barbara, her mother said, "we cant go, we already have tickets for Shirley Bassey and would much rather see her" ! -- In another Hotel in Vegas on the same night ! ! !
I'll give Barbra one thing; she's honest! Not many artists would pay this type of tribute to another artist. Barbra was also asked many years ago if she would pay to see any other artist, and she said, yes, Shirley Bassey.
Both singers have top tier voices. But, Shirley really outshines in a live concert setting because she is more extroverted. She is so sure of her vocals she can spend more time with her wonderful eye, hand, & body movements to help tell the story of what she is sings. When first starting out she was taught from veterans of the vaudville era. She is also a very emotional singer, and it comes through in every song she sings. Shirley would have made a great actress, but back in the day it was not easy for a mixed race person to get into the business. After a while she gave that dream up, and decided to concentrate on her music and to give the best live concerts and TV Specials that she could. And, she did just that..
Who else in the world could do this better, she is fabulous
Listening to this song I get the impression that this woman can do anything she wants her voice to do. Such control and poise! WOW!

I'm from the USA, and I second your comment! It's unfortunate, but because Shirley was born before WWII, and thus before the UA-cam generation, so many young listeners outside of the UK don't know who she is unless you reference James Bond. Something else that urks me is when you look at the 'Best Vocalist' websites and singers like Britney Spears are ranked higher! Common! I understand that the younger generation doesn't relate to the amazing vocal abilities and qualities of Shirley Bassey, but the professionals who understand musical attributes should no better. They classify her as the 'Belter', but most fans know of how she can sing a simple lullaby beautifully with superbly rich and smooth sounds. But, thankfully to UA-cam, more and more of the younger generation who are looking for great vocalists of the past stumble on to Shirley, and most become fans!
She embarrasses the teenybop girlie's, she is in a league of her own, pure class. To be precise she is from Tiger Bay, South Wales UK. She has everything, she is like a Godess. Tina Turner was as good but in different ways. I can't stop listening to her now, and thanks for the comment.

My cousin adored Shirley , and went around clubs singing like Shirley Bassey until one day her young daughter got run over and died, my cousin Denise never sang again and sadly passed away herself last year :-( Shirley, she loved you.. when I watch you I fill up thinking about her. Many of the singer's of Shirley's generation don't even know what that is. I saw an interview with Aretha Franklin a few months ago and the interviewer asked her if she had ever used Auto Tune. Her Answer: What is that? I'm sure it's the same way with Shirley. They had to sing the old fashion way, and by practicing with grueling vocal excercises on a regular basis to make perfect. And, It has worked for both of these great ladies of music.

Great Insight you have. When Shirley was younger she had opera vocal coaches approach her and told her that she had the pipes to be a great opera star. Of course, Shirley decided another path, which has worked out very well for her over the past 6 decades...
