Comparing this KTM AWD to an Africa Twin is futile and silly.. I owned an Africa Twin and found very quickly its all hype as far as handling goes after four totally different sets of tires it was obvious the Africa Twin was never going to come close to the handling of the 1996 XR600R off road ..i would put a 1973 CB500 Four to an off road test against the 2017 Africa Twin any day as years ago before there was any adventure bikes and built a CB500 Four scrambler that ate up single track woods riding and short track sideways at 90 no problem

I don’t own a Ktm. I’ve got a Ducati Multistrada enduro. That being said they have very similar electronics and power specs. One thing you find out very quickly... These bikes get a lot of attention. There’s the people who own the bikes and absolutely love them (electronics and all) and then there’s the people who have never sat on one who love to naysay everything about them. These bikes weigh 600 lbs. No one is trying to pass them off as dirt bikes or dual sports. But for what they are, these bikes are absolutely amazing. 90% of the negative comments are from the people who wish they had one but can’t for whatever reason.

I just bought the KTM last week and I agree. The perfect bike for me in everyway. It doesn't carve canyons like a sport bike and doesn't handle off road terrain as good as a dedicated dirt bike but it is good enough for the different terrain I ride on.
Roadstar 1963 Don’t undersell your bike, haha! With 160hp, you can embarrass at least 90% of the sport bike riders you come across and then afterwards run to the grocery store and fit everything in your panniers. What’s not to love?
Roadstar 1963 I have 1190 Adventure standard and carve mountains with sportbikes while leaning to edge of rear tire. They handle great.

The KTM 1290 Super Adventure R puts out 160 BHP and weighs 217 kilograms (dry weight), giving it a BHP per tonne figure of 737.33.
The Bugatti Chiron puts out 1479 BHP and weighs 1996 kilograms (dry weight), giving it a BHP per tonne figure of 740.98.
So the KTM has a BHP per tonne figure that is only approximately 4 BHP less than a car that has a base price of €2,400,000.
I couldn't bothered looking up what a Honda Civic has.

So many people here criticising the KTM but I bet most don’t own one, let alone rode it on a dirt trail long enough to justify their claims.
I started watching you for Jeep content years ago. I recently decided that I want to get back to the truly exciting stuff.Guess what, I'm looking at the 2022 KTM 1290 SAS (I'm in the southeast so an R makes little sense). I was surprised a few weeks ago when I saw your KTM vs a Jeep. Just saw this 1290 video and have a new respect for you.
I guess you have analytics that show there are more jeepers than adventure rides but maybe you can pull more people into it.

Love my 1190S. The ABS and acceleration are amazing. Had the 690. I was much braver on single track with the 690. The 1190 is better for extended rides and will still take you anywhere your skills allow. A bit heavier also. The 1290 must be a beast!

Just switched to this bike from Africa Twin, OMG, I wish I had done it earlier!
It's a great bike and it can be had for a nice discount (2017 leftover for $14K @ 0.99% for 60 months). I have one and it does wonderful off-road and even better on-road. Can do mild single track even if you are not a pro rider. I also have a 990 Adventure and a 501 for more dirt oriented stuff. The 990 is a beast off-road and is very raw. The 1290 is refined and smooth. Great bike and review!!

Alot of people don't know . This bike is compatible with christini front wheel drive kit . 👌 making it 2 wheel drive & unbeatable off road . A serious desert sand cruiser. A real go anywhere machine.

Own it, love it! have had all of the others. The 1290R is the most affordable, the most capable and simply the most fun compared to all other bikes in this segment.

Love the bike. It is definitely a beast when it comes to acceleration on the sport mode. The only downside is the electronics. Sometimes you are getting weird message on the screen like: General failure, no key detected, weird stuff that are annoying. Plus I had a problem with the gaz cap that didn't want to open. It is electronic so you don't need to put the key in to open it. But mine decided to malfunction at the gas station. I had to take the whole cap off by unscrewing all the bolts. Just bought a new gaz cap without any lock on it. The last problem was the leak on my front wheel. Since those wheels are tubeless, I had 4 leaks on the spokes. Bad thing was that I did only one ride off-road. Plus the air temperature sensor was not working anymore so I had to bring back the bike to the dealer to fix everything. But in the end, those minor problems are not a deal breaker for me. Just the power is amazing!!!
Honestly it sounds like a bit of user error. The gas cap is locked.
The weird error you're talking about is not really that weird. It's telling you it cannot read the key. It's too far from the receiver or there is inteference. Put ot in you're jacket pocket, sleeve pocket, left pants pocket, tank bag, or somewhere near the receiver.
gotta ask if you've had any problems with the stock pegs are too small especially when standing?
I’m curious if the holeshot on dirt could be done in 2nd like on a motocross bike.
You should look at the Yamaha virago conversions, it will show you an affordable alternative.
Watch the ktm ralley that is held in Australia, if you really want to see what these bikes can actually go through. It's absolutely insane.

Trading my Africa Twin for the KTM today
Every rider is free to choose whatever works for them. I am not a fan of the 790/890/1290 and would never own one. I prefer the 'Rally bike' looks of the 990/1090 and do not like the complex computer modes of these new generation KTM's; and especially do not like the headlight. I prefer a key and not the wireless start setup. Great interview, thanks for sharing!
I really need to get back into riding. I used to love it, but there are so many irresponsible drivers in my area (a LOT of cellphone drivers).

Cars And Zebras get an adventure bike and only ride to the trails, ride trials/off-road and then go home. I have more fun on dirt with my 1190 adv than street.
It's why I ride on dirt roads and trails...and have two bikes and one being a 2-stroke to do my mid-week singletrack outings.
I always liked riding my buddy's ktms but never really liked how expensive the parts and certain services were. Stuck to my Suzuki.
Cool bike but I'd buy a used 4wd for 10 grand, spend another 10k + on mods and enjoy my toy on the street and off road. I crash too much to get a bike! Keep up the great videos!
Owning one of these, I refuse to purchase any replacement parts from KTM if possible, (seat, foot pegs, skid plates etc) I try to support companies that spend the time and energy producing after market items for these bikes. I feel after spending the amount of money we do on the original bike there's no way I'm giving KTM more money to replace items they could have built right the first time.
About 8 to 8.5 seconds, pretty freaking good for a bike that heavy on dirt a mile above sea level. Thought it would be a lot faster than my RZR RS1 but its still respectable!
I can guarantee you the bike will do it a lot quicker in the same conditions
I have a KTM 1290 super adventure R and my 0-60 is 2.85 seconds. Before the bike is broke in (600 miles) the computer limits the power
Stunning bike; don't switch it on unless you're travelling at least 50 miles.
KTM /Husqvarna has really being taking the bikes to a new level. Though Beta still beats them in the seat height department
Seat height (and comfort) on the KTM 1290 is what really keeps me from seriously considering to buy one. I wish the seat was about 2 inches higher and more flat.

The GPS is a Garmin Montana. The Mounting bracket is KTM Powerparts which attaches to the windshield mounting bracket. The cradle is the AMPS rugged mount.

A far as I know that engine has never been used in the Dakar race, not at least since they limited displacement to 450 cc.

Certainly fits the bill for a certain segment of the ADV market. Riders' skill still trumps fancy electronics when the going gets rough off-road. Would Ewan and Charlie have been better served with a KTM on LWR?

Off-road riding I agree with you. On-road I would say that modern ABS trumps any rider's skill in an unexpected emergency. That's an interesting question about Long Way Round. I only remember one major engine problem, don't remember whose bike it was but those Mongolian guys fixed it on the side of the road! Then both of their frames cracked. When their photographer crashed his bike and they had to buy him a local one, he was so much happier because of how much lighter it was! I think they definitely would have enjoyed ride modes with electronic suspension...I know I do! But how would've the electronics stood up to the mud and water and constant dropping? That's a good question!
@@hambone4728 Ham, when I rewatch LWR I note that they tested the KTM 640 ADV and 950 (probably) and the BMW 650GS and 1150GS. While the 1150 served well when roads were moderately passable, they struggled in the rough stuff due to their weight. Reliable? Yes, but not without their gremlins, as you noted. Lyndon Poskitt (Races2places) is showing how a 690 (modified for adventure) can handle just about anything, although he is quite an advanced rider and top shelf mechanic. Nothing is perfect and mechanical breakdowns are bound to happen with any brand. Happy trails to you!
Didn't KTM turn them down as being a sponsor?! Consequently, the BMW 1150 and now 1200 have become synonymous with hardcore ADV riding. That bit of advertising has probably been worth the weight of several of those bikes in gold!

I rode the "R" and the "S" version of this bike in the same week: ua-cam.com/video/7ts7c3I4fOEI/v-deo.htmlt seems to me that for most riders the "S" is the better choice. It's totally capable of off-roading but since most people ride these mostly on pavement it's more practical for the average buyer. These days the serious off-roaders will opt for the 790 Adventure R.

Good luck when you are up in a russian tundra, down in Africa or in western China to get this shit fixed if it breaks.
I've had mine all over North America in remote places without an issue. Everything is modern at one time, by your logic we should be on bicycles.

I never said that the break often, I said that it is easier to fix, or find someone to fix, an issue with simpler tec. What do you think how many shops or backdoor garages in non-first world countries have a diagnostics system for vehicle electronic, specifically one that can read out an specialized motorcycle brand (don't nail me down on that one, I have no idea if specialized equipment is needed for a Yamaha).
Quintessential, and that is why I said "at least for me", I, and I know people who feel the same way, feel more comfy on a simpler, easier to fix bike. I never said that those have less issues, I just said that those might be easier to fix when they do.

So basicly i dont need to ride my self anymore.... Well i rather ride the bike my self, take risks i feel prepared for and dont trust all the electro jazz do everything for me. This is more for some dentist who wanne feel cool and all i guess. :-P
I have one and it doesn't defy stupidity, poor riding mechanics, etc. You still need to know how to ride. Tech helps, but some wannabe riding a 500+ bike will crash within 5 minutes of doing any serious off roading.

Rode one a week ago in the Alps for a whole day. Apart from the power (which sometimes is unusable/uncontrollable) and the suspension there is nothing to die for, as in wanting to own one. For this bucket of money - vibrates like hell in the pegs, has strange noises in the fairing (from vibration and poor wind dynamics), is chunky/unrefined and is heavy as a rhinocerous, with a high center of gravity. Also, difficult to hold still when pillion gets up due to the same reason/high center of gravity. Huligan package in a bike priced for bankers... Mine (20 some + k's) had the saddle lock removed for good as it was totally broken and had to ride all day long with a "rear brake sensor error" on the dash board as the sensor died because of too much water (bike washed every day, when returned by clients). Adventure bike... So, no outside temp and time indicator for me whole day long as they were covered by the error message. Fun to ride - hell yes. Would own one - Hahaha! Best joke of the day, considering the price tag.
I mean, it is cool, but most of the electronic stuff is just there to break. More sensors and more computers and more weight. What's wrong with just having a throttle cable? Just because you can make something electronic doesn't mean you should.
Ride-by-wire does allow for electronic cruise control. It's been proven electronics are more reliable than moving parts. They don't wear out. Everything with moving parts eventually fails. Why are computers all going to SSD drives? No moving parts. Auto manufacturers are reducing moving parts and extending longevity every remodel. Ever seen an original 1965 mustang with several hundred thousand miles on it? The is a TFL video with a Toyota truck with over a million miles on it...
Josh Marklowitz No, electronics don't wear out like a cable does. Electronics are certainly not failure proof like you seem to think they are. If they were, you wouldn't need thousands of dollars worth of scan tools to diagnose cars. When something on this goes wrong, will KTM actually provide you the information you need to diagnose and repair it? Doubtful. Same as automakers trying their best with every redesign to release less and less information to the end customer, because they want you to be stuck taking it back to them when parts fail.
340duster:Cool car by the way. I do not mean to insult you, just answering your question. For me, my motorcycles are for pleasure, not my daily transportation and nice if I can work on them myself. So I understand where you are coming from. Unfortunately all these new electronics take time to work out the bugs. But I wouldn't want my daily driver to have mechanical points, distributor rotor, mechanical fuel pump, carb etc. I know by your name you get where I'm coming from. One of the 1st upgrades a lot of people do to old cars is electronic ignition. Why, reliability, performance and all the adjustability. To each their own. There are many other bikes that are old school and easy to work on if that is your priority. Some people enjoy tinkering in the garage. I just want to ride and not have to tinker all the time like my old 1968 AMX. Cool thing about bikes is there are different options for everyone, though it doesn't seem like there is a perfect bike that can do everything for anyone. Ride safe.
Josh Marklowitz Actually ride-by-wire is just like an old electromechanical hard disk drive. It has a motor that has to move the throttle butterfly valve open and close which is like an old HDD with a stepper motor head and is subject to wear and tear between moving parts. The difference is that if the butterfly motor fails, you're stranded while no such thing will happen in a direct throttle. At most, the cable starts fraying which you will start feeling as it happens. If it breaks, just fit a new one on the road side and you are good to go.
I understand the advantages of this tech but I don't think it is always necessary in all applications.
Josh Marklowitz Just because I like throttle cables doesn't mean I want points lol! Btw, 1973 already had electronic ignition! I just think there are some things that don't need to be electronic, and the throttle is one of them. The throttle feel is not the same as with a cable, the response is different, and it can be inconsistent. Have fun out there!

I'm still not convinced to trade my 2012 KLR-650 for one of these. Reliability is what bothers me the most. There is a lot to break down on this bike. Unfortunately, German (and Austrian) vehicles are not known for good reliability.
Every person that is going to purchase this bike or any off-road bike is going to take it off-road. Motorcycles in general are over priced to begin with, now I purchase a bike for $19,000 and need to throw another $5,000 into the bike to get it off-road worthy, just so their sales point numbers looks lower. That’s completely insane. So what all these manufacturers are saying is, don’t buy new, buy used as most likely the previous owner that purchased it new and installed all the off-road add on’s for you. Find one a couple of years old with low miles and maintenance record, you will most likely save yourself about $9,000. That’s what I get from every manufacturer selling an off-road motorcycle. Too bad they can’t just make an off-road motorcycle just that.
Nice bike but I would need real gauges. "glare free" screens are not good enough. I see reflections and reduced visibility just in this review video. I can't stand it in cars so out in the direct sun in a bike. No way.

And it is as heavy as a hardly dudalson wonder if you can bend one of the connecting rods and give it that potato potato sound ..the colors are right orange and black so u would have to sell my hardly leathers on eBay ...hummm can I make it leak oil to mark its spot ? So when you get it stuck off road ...call a sky crane to air lift it out ? Cause the last time my Dyna dirt fell over in the front yard and trapped my boot under the primary I had to chew my boot off like a coyote caught in a bear trap and crawl in the front door ..only to be awoke afew hours later by my neighbor on his moped at my front door hold my boot in his hand ..saying ..hey there neighbor I stood your motorbike back up on it's wheels . this must be your boot as it was under the bike after I picked it up .I didn't know them were that easy to pick up never picked one up before it..I think I'll get one now

Why are y'all so afraid of a computer? It's not going to fail as easily as moving parts, and at worst you get a service light and some computer controlled stuff gets disabled (ex: if ABS sensor fails (extremely unlikely), your ABS brakes turn off).
No, the worst case is that the system shuts down because a single element failed and you sit stranded in the middle of nowhere. Depending on the system (I'll be honest, I don't know if this is an issue with KTMs as well) a single broken sensor is enough for this to happen.
Second, most moving parts can be somehow fixed no matter were you are and what you have with you. A broken chain, a torn rubber, you name it, could be fixed or replaced in almost any little town in eastern russia or deep in Africa (just examples) without ruining your entire trip. Good luck getting an electronical issue fixed in the same situation.
To answer your question directly: I ain't afraid of computers, I'm simply unable to fix them with little ressources if they break on the road.
