They are very unlikely to actually be twins. The pair the low-ranking Ameia raised last year were not actually related. What should we be looking for? A female following her closely waiting for an opportunity to retrieve her offspring or a dead or ailing female that shows sign of recently giving birth. Last year, a recently sterilized female stole her daughter’s first baby and refused to return it. Sadly, she even refused to release its corpse to the mother no matter how hard she tried to retrieve it. Kidnappings do occur among Rhesus macaques as do infant abandonment. Just not as frequently as other species, thankfully.
The darker on on Mom's right never comes up for air lol. I wonder if she is the biological one- she seem right at home on both sides of the milk bar. What an amazing occurrence yet again in this Troop. Thanks for the wonderful footage, JW. I love your videos.

The one that seems to prefer the left side, that’s identified as a boy, seems smaller. It’s interesting that he seems to cling as much to the other baby as to mum when they’re being carried - a bit like upside down piggyback with the older/possibly stronger one doing the heavy work of holding on. The baby in your last photo looks darker, like the as yet unknown gender slightly larger one, so I’m thinking that’s probably the biological infant? The little lighter boy would then be the +1 pickup. ;) Either way, good luck to mum here. I hope being high ranking will give them an extra boost as the goodie slowdown might have made Ameia’s situation, her being lower ranking, more difficult to sustain.

Its more likely that she is snatching the baby from its mother and since she just gave birth herself the chemicals and hormones make her care for it possibly. It's unusual for macaque monkeys to "adopt" others babies and even more rare that they care and allow breastfeeding from babies that are not their own.
@@vg7735 well it may seem that way but its actually very common among macaques to snatch babies of lower ranking females as a way to show dominance. Its actually pretty cruel and a lot of the time the baby is abused or accidentally dropped or other injury can occur. But that's not always the case they can care for it even tho its pretty rare. It is far more likely that the baby would be kidnapped then it is for macaques to naturally have twins. Its very rare and the kidnapping is very common.
The baby on the right teat is spread all across mom’s chest and tummy and the other baby is having trouble holding on. Guess we know who’s the more dominant.😂
This is my first time to see this troop. So many questions. Usually baby’s abandoned or born with deformities will die. Sad to see two seriously injured baby’s that look to have bite marks. Cute baby’s.
You have to remember that these monkeys are about knee high to us so everything looks ginormous in their lil hands. It took me a few months after I began following macaques to learn that bananas, sweet potatoes & apples don’t grow giant sized in the Far East.😎

Either adopted a baby from an orphan situation. or she kidnapped a baby from a lower ranking mom who can't get her baby back. We'll see how long she keeps the non biological one. May be for keeps, but then maybe not. She may have seen how amiea was always getting food handed to her and thought to emulate this.
If the baby was kidnapped, you’d see the mom steps away from the kidnapper at all times. More than likely the mom died during birth and this female picked it up. It’s probably related to her.
I am really enjoying your videos. Thank you for identifying some of the monkeys and giving us information on them. It’s nice knowing that the female has adopted one of the newborns. Although it’s rare there are still twins that are occasionally born. I wasn’t sure about these two because mom is allowing both to feed well and isn’t singling on out. So glad to see she was willing to take on an orphan or maybe even took one that didn’t need taken lol

I’m surprised that some people would tolerate the smelly trip by car or bus just to feed those feral pigs their kitchen garbage; Especially since there is so much bread, vegetables and fruits from feeding the monkeys. However, better than going down a garbage disposer or into a landfill inside a plastic bag. I’m also surprised the monkeys are eating it after being spoiled with all the meals on wheels during the covid visitor boom. I hope these are actual twins ...but I worry they are not, and the one on her left side who is smaller and is subtly prevented from feeding by both mom and other baby in most of this footage, will get weaker and die. Preference advantages compound extremely quickly bcus the baby getting more milk gets stronger which in turn makes her capable of controlling teat access so only she gets milk, which in turn makes her even stronger and other baby even weaker etc. The weak baby dies of starvation unless the mother is committed to enforcing feeding fairness. Because it definitely seems like one on her right is getting significant preference in this video - i just dont know if every day is like this. The one that was almost always on her left side, Ill call him Lefty (but he is on our right, when moms facing us), appears much narrower in body and is always pushed out further away from mom, like in most of the video, most of Righty's body is already leveraged between Lefty and Mom. Furthermore Mom keeps teat-blocking Lefty with her arm. This is no casual accident but a very common tactic moms use, normally in weaning, but also when there is a 2nd, kidnapped, baby who she doesnt want to really nurse like her own, but only wants to carry it around as...essentially a symbol of her status/dominance. It doesnt appear to me baded on what i see here that Righty is just clingy and Lefty independent by nature. Rather it looks like a simply a more subtle version of the tragedy Ive seen played out quite a few times, (albeit usually with long tail macaques). It looks to me this less-clingy nature is forced on Lefty. When mom constantly teat-blocks him while she lets other baby suck, Lefty makes geckering noises. Although Lefty at least does get nipple at least once. Again, I dont know if they were seen born of her the same day, if so itll likely be ok. AND Im only going by this video. But if Lefty isnt hers and this video represents the normal day, things do not bode well.
Well let's see if she's as great as Ameilia. Or if she will start denying adopted/stolen baby access to the milk bar. Dadadahh, only time will tell. 😁😁

Wow. Arroz just posted about a baby that was abandoned by the Mum, I think due to birth complications, so maybe this is a such a situation. The second baby's Mum might have abandoned the baby or even died giving birth. The baby Arroz posted about was left on the road for 5-6 hours before the feeders decided to take it and care for it. It is a shame that no Skulltroop Mums took on a 2nd baby.

Maybe they are matting with a male to close to them in the blood line. 2 of the queen and kings boys in Arroz groups he records are still living in group, the boys are mostly made to leave and join a bachelor group, these 2, haven't. I have wondered if they mate with family. Their Dad is old, his reign is about up or is.
The Car Park Troop is best for "twins" because they get lots of food and the kind people of HK will be sure mom gets enough to feed two babies. Can you figure out who birthed the other "twin?"

They are not going to starve if they’re not fed people food. Feeding them is just a way to keep them by the road so they can be filmed and enjoyed. If I were there I would be feeding them too but we have to admit why they have all these birth defects.

You do not click bait. Neither does AM. I am not seeing the split feet. Please point them out again. Last year you showed us the mum that you were fairly certain had abandoned Dario. Do you have any idea this year who abandoned a baby?
In a previous video: ua-cam.com/video/zoqfz-hUjyw/v-deo.html, we can see baby Carina's hand and foot deformities clearly. As to the abandoned baby's natal mom, I guess it should be a low-ranking female, probably Blue's younger sister. The suspected mom of Dario has given birth to a baby boy this year and is still raising it.
I apologize if this is a dumb question but how do other monkeys know when one monkey is “high ranking” ? I mean, the high rankers aren’t dressed differently nor are they wearing a crown on their heads. So, how do they know ?
They learn basically if their mom is getting beaten the monkeys associated with the monkey doing the beating outranks them. If their mom is doing the beating they learn that they outrank that troop member and their relatives. So it is a process but something they learn through observation. Infants will call their moms for backup and the battle is usually determine by rank of the mother. Sometimes the moms dont intervene until called. I read that based on a study in Cayo, Puerto Rico.
It doesn't surprise me, that these macaques adopt , after watching them for years & seeing how crazy some of them are over babies. I just hope that the baby in question is actually adopted, & not kidnapped. I can't imagine a baby being left alone long enough to starve, when there are so many longing to get their arms around a baby.
I was going to say those babies look extra small, then I saw the apple 🍎 mom was holding.....unless that's some giant variety of fruit, mom must be a small size adult, herself. 🐒 I can't imagine how they could gobble up that pig 🐖 food like it was some kind of treat. They must not have very discerning palettes. 🤢
With two babies mom has had her hair pulled out on her sides. Babies should be careful not to pull any more, mom will look like she has a pare of pants on.

Isn't this 2 this year or was the one with the disfigured face last year? I wonder if it's a result of the pandemic and over feeding, females who normally wouldn't go into heat so young are having babies with the abundance of food. Since they're not mentally ready, even if biologically ready, they end up abandoning them. I wonder about the abundance of food for 4 sets of birth defects too. I'd guess either a male who normally would have been unable to breed, was able to sneak in, since there's less fighting over resources. Or babies who wouldn't have made it were able to survive with the help of the extra feeders.

I don't know, but I don't like the mother monkeys. There are a few that is good to their babies.

This happens ALL THE TIME. This is extremely common amongst macaques.

Carina was unable to hold on to mom properly until over four weeks old.

I hope these are actual twins ...but I worry they are not, and the one on her left side who is smaller and is subtly prevented from feeding by both mom and other baby in most of this footage, will get weaker and die. Preference advantages compound extremely quickly bcus the baby getting more milk gets stronger which in turn makes her capable of controlling teat access so only she gets milk, which in turn makes her even stronger and other baby even weaker etc. The weak baby dies of starvation unless the mother is committed to enforcing feeding fairness. Because it definitely seems like one on her right is getting significant preference in this video - i just dont know if every day is like this. The one that was almost always on her left side, Ill call him Lefty (but he is on our right, when moms facing us), appears much narrower in body and is always pushed out further away from mom, like in most of the video, most of Righty's body is already leveraged between Lefty and Mom. Furthermore Mom keeps teat-blocking Lefty with her arm. This is no casual accident but a very common tactic moms use, normally in weaning, but also when there is a 2nd, kidnapped, baby who she doesnt want to really nurse like her own, but only wants to carry it around as...essentially a symbol of her status/dominance.
It doesnt appear to me baded on what i see here that Righty is just clingy and Lefty independent by nature. Rather it looks like a simply a more subtle version of the tragedy Ive seen played out quite a few times, (albeit usually with long tail macaques). It looks to me this less-clingy nature is forced on Lefty.
When mom constantly teat-blocks him while she lets other baby suck, Lefty makes geckering noises. Although Lefty at least does get nipple at least once.
Again, I dont know if they were seen born of her the same day, if so itll likely be ok. AND Im only going by this video.
But if Lefty isnt hers and this video represents the normal day, things do not bode well.

Wow. Arroz just posted about a baby that was abandoned by the Mum, I think due to birth complications, so maybe this is a such a situation. The second baby's Mum might have abandoned the baby or even died giving birth. The baby Arroz posted about was left on the road for 5-6 hours before the feeders decided to take it and care for it. It is a shame that no Skulltroop Mums took on a 2nd baby.

Maybe they are matting with a male to close to them in the blood line. 2 of the queen and kings boys in Arroz groups he records are still living in group, the boys are mostly made to leave and join a bachelor group, these 2, haven't. I have wondered if they mate with family. Their Dad is old, his reign is about up or is.
No rhesus macaques usually don't mate with relatives. They know who they are and avoid it.

They are not going to starve if they’re not fed people food. Feeding them is just a way to keep them by the road so they can be filmed and enjoyed. If I were there I would be feeding them too but we have to admit why they have all these birth defects.

Deformed, look closely at the baby's feet. Only like 3 appendages. Due to a gene being passed down or inbreeding.

You do not click bait. Neither does AM. I am not seeing the split feet. Please point them out again. Last year you showed us the mum that you were fairly certain had abandoned Dario. Do you have any idea this year who abandoned a baby?

As to the abandoned baby's natal mom, I guess it should be a low-ranking female, probably Blue's younger sister. The suspected mom of Dario has given birth to a baby boy this year and is still raising it.

I apologize if this is a dumb question but how do other monkeys know when one monkey is “high ranking” ? I mean, the high rankers aren’t dressed differently nor are they wearing a crown on their heads. So, how do they know ?
The higher ranking ones are usually from the family of the alpha female. Monkeys know their family lineage and their hierarchy within the troop.

They learn basically if their mom is getting beaten the monkeys associated with the monkey doing the beating outranks them. If their mom is doing the beating they learn that they outrank that troop member and their relatives. So it is a process but something they learn through observation. Infants will call their moms for backup and the battle is usually determine by rank of the mother. Sometimes the moms dont intervene until called. I read that based on a study in Cayo, Puerto Rico.
Those weaning videos will be something else.
It doesn't surprise me, that these macaques adopt , after watching them for years & seeing how crazy some of them are over babies. I just hope that the baby in question is actually adopted, & not kidnapped. I can't imagine a baby being left alone long enough to starve, when there are so many longing to get their arms around a baby.

Isn't this 2 this year or was the one with the disfigured face last year? I wonder if it's a result of the pandemic and over feeding, females who normally wouldn't go into heat so young are having babies with the abundance of food. Since they're not mentally ready, even if biologically ready, they end up abandoning them.
I wonder about the abundance of food for 4 sets of birth defects too. I'd guess either a male who normally would have been unable to breed, was able to sneak in, since there's less fighting over resources. Or babies who wouldn't have made it were able to survive with the help of the extra feeders.
