Now the question begs, will the "surprises" be genuinely good ones or will Hasbro/WOTC Corporate being digging themselves into an even deeper hole whilst being pelted with rotten eggs? Only time will tell.
Hasbro/Wotc needs money now to survive. It makes sense that they would try to focus on the D&D as a brand rather than TTRPGs. Expect the VTT to get pushed due to there hope of monthly revenue. Luckily for those who want to play the game Wotc support isn’t required. I’ve played TTRPGs from companies are gone, the game still plays fine.
Their reasoning makes sense to a degree, it's just a matter of them not forgetting their core business of making the actual TTRPG that has some people concerned
@ The focus away from TTRPG books will not be good news for those wanting books but do Wotc run much of a risk from this? Some people may leave but D&D holds such a lead over other TTRPGs I can’t see it losing its top spot for good or ill. Not saying this is a good thing but to a corporation everything is a finance spreadsheet and video game, VTT money probably looks better than TTRPG money.
Been playing since 1979. As a long time player of DnD and OTHER games, I personally don't really care what WoTC does. Their attitude twords their core players is repugnant. Their view of the guy who is literally the father of their cash cow is ignorant. Their desire to turn DnD into an electronic pay to play microtransaction world is also antithetical to what DnD is supposed to be. While playing online together has it's place, getting together in one room is much better. As for me. WoTC has stated that they don't care for me as I am a straight white male who is older. I also have money which WoTC won't ever see again. I currently play 3.5, BECMI and Advanced DnD. I have around 200 hardcovers and a similar number of softcovers for DnD alone and other titles that tie in. I actively encourage new players that don't want to pay the kind of money for new hardcovers to look on Ebay etc for other editions or DriveThruRpg for PDF's. WoTC can shrivel up and die.
Also there was a whole event outline all the 2025 releases including a new starter kit and two Forgotten Realms books. This is a very confused report today.
WOTC literally doesn't know the meaning of quality, after they recently laid off their entire quality assurance department in favour of hiring QA contractors a few weeks per year.
Honestly, no, as they have several books coming out. They have the Monster Manual, Starter Set, Forgotten Realms Players Guide, Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide, and the Dragon Anthology all coming up, which is actually a considerable number of books.

D&D "fans": How dare they not give us more playable D&D next year! We need more books!! I swear you guys wouldn't be happy no matter what WotC says. By the way, Eve of Ruin was an early 2024 release, it's been out for months. That sounds pretty packed to me.
Exactly. I’m not sure why we would say “they aren’t releasing content” when they’ve already announced 2025 content. The Starter Set is going to be huge for them and those Forgotten Realms books sound intriguing.
While it hasn't been talked about I think that we will be getting a redux of Tyranny of Dragons and maybe a separate adventure involving the red wizards of thay.
Imagine doing the "5.5" overhaul, giving yourself a blank cheque to literally just recycle your previous assets with minor rewordings, and not doing anything with it. MTG gets too much, D&D will probably not get enough. Make it make sense.
If they are gonna rely on the community for more ttrpg content might as well have free rein with artificer subclasses. I bet there are many people already brewing with ideas
It's funny how all D&D drama is centered around all things WotC 🤣 Thank god I play classic. All you people that are riding on the WotC I feel a great sadness for you.
honestly i got into dnd because i like the novels and video games in forgotten realms. so long as they come out with that stuff and maybe more media presence i will be fine
I am okay with less content as more books usually leads to bloat or middling adventures. That said, in 2025, WotC is releasing The Monster Manual on February 18th, The Dragon Anthology in summer, The new starter set in the fall, and a Forgotten Realms Player Guide as well as a separate Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide both likely in the 4th quarter--probably November or December. I wouldn't consider that "less".

im not interested in d&d as a "brand" necessarily, what endeared me to the game at first was the campaigns like curse of strahd and the supplementary books like tasha's cauldron. on one hand, i do hope that this is a push for wotc to prioritize quality over quantity since the last releases before the 2024 books were severely lacking in quality in my opinion. i don't necessarily believe that to be the case, unfortunately, but fingers crossed that wotc turns things around to improve their standing in the ttrpg community in 2025.
I too want less D&D in 2025. If they could crash the brand so badly that it loses enough market share to dip to like, 5% of the TTRPG market, that would be great, thanks. Maybe the people who only play the 'world's greatest role-playing game' will realize just how ironic and misleading that slogan is if they just play something better for the first time.

Such a waste of a 50 year anniversary. Honestly, with all the books in 5e being underpowered now for 2024 characters, it makes this a huge pivot point for DnD as a brand. Now that they are trying to monetize the hobby on digital platforms, I don’t think we’ll get DnD books and rules updates like we did before. I think it’ll all be tweaks and rebalances, with other mechanics going to other systems rather than building a better DnD. 5e was already pretty modular anyway, so it’s not like anything WotC can produce will be truly game changing. If the game won’t change, then the medium will. From here on out, DnD is a lifestyle, not a game.
No new releases is a GOOD thing. WoTC has ruined D&D enough. Can't wait for a Geek to come in, buy the whole thing and end the WOKE Mind Virus. Until that happens, I have my REAL D&D books, all the way back to AD&D. I can play no matter.
