Hot take: it’s not healthy to be super obese and it’s not healthy to be severely underweight. If someone establishes a diet where they remain healthy and active, then who gives a crap. Paltrow’s suggestions aren’t for everyone. Tess’s suggestions aren’t for everyone. Abbey’s suggestions aren’t for everyone. Nuance is vastly important. Jfc.

As a longtime Abbey viewer, I've only recently started to notice some of the EXTREMELY problematic things she does. She mystifies weight loss so much and makes it seem impossible to pander to HAES.
It's also incredibly sad to see her bust out the pitchforks whenever a thin beautiful women's diet is being dissected simply for having discipline and prioritizing wellness, which clearly, looking at Abbey, we can tell she does too. We have eyes.
Just to touch on SOME of the bullshit she perpetrates:
    • ''Counting calories doesn't work because food manufacturers are allowed to be up to 30% off on their labels of the actual calories'' (aka, all your efforts are futile and achieving a healthy caloric deficit is impossible)
    • '''All intentional weightloss is unsustainable and 98% of dieters gain the weight back and MORE within 5 years'' (aka the bread and butter of fat acceptance, a study not only refuted 50 years ago, but completely misrepresented in its data in order to argue this point)
    • Making metabolic adaptation seem like starvation mode and saying that weightloss slows down your BMR by up to 500 calories and that you'll never be able to maintain it. This is true, and the very simple answer to it is that a smaller body takes less energy to run and function. That's it. Me at 110lbs and me at 196lbs do not have the same energy requirements. Also, it IS true that you'll have to be mindful about your diet and exercise for the rest of your life if you want longterm results. If you go on a crash diet and then right back to what you were doing before, your body will go right back to what it was before.
    • This is part of both her personality and her attempt to appeal to the creators she's talking about, but she has way too many positives to say about everyone's food choices (except when it comes to thin beautiful women lol) In reality, lucky charms is not a good breakfast. Period. It's not an evil food, but it's not a good meal and cannot be equated to a filling high protein meal.
    • In my opinion, she is very untruthful in how she portrays her own diet (at least in the portions she claims to eat in). The breakfast in her Emma Chamberlein video alone is upwards of 800 calories with the butter, oil, two huge pieces of bread, 1.5 avocados, honey, eggs, etc. All extremely calorically dense foods. In her Hailey Bieber video, she shows herself eating THREE full, adult sized breakfasts and tries to dunk on Hailey (hate her btw) for choosing to eat eggs OR oatmeal OR a different sort of protein (which is completely normal). For her height and EXTREMELY low weight, that is almost half or more of her maintenance calories, especially given that she says all the time that she hates exercise/only does gentle movement when she feels like it (which will not significantly increase your energy output whatsoever). In other videos, she'll show herself eating TWO full adult sized breakfasts (a full on avocado toast with an egg, plus a bowl of oatmeal and add-ons) and jokingly say she's just indecisive.
While I absolutely understand that she feels a responsibility not to encourage people eat less in order to look like her, I think it's really unfair to show yourself eating a body builder amount of calories (2500+) while looking very very very thin and just be like 'see? it's my natural set point weight!' when no one who is truly mindful of their diet has ever overturned the laws of thermodynamics. Of course, her cop out to this would be 'im an intuitive eater and I don't always eat everything I serve or cook for myself', which is a very lame excuse. Show what you DID eat then.
*By the way, Gwyneth's diet is very concerning. Not excusing it at all, and I think it's very alarming that she would rather stick herself with IVs then eat the healthy, whole foods that would yield her the same nutrients and benefits.

No, she doesn't need to make slight changes to her diet, the girl is 600 pounds with a 15-year Internet history of failing diets and continuously gaining weight. She needs inpatient and therapy, not necessarily in that order. Lol, so scummy.
Newsflash, the large majority of people will get fat if they unrestrictedly consume processed foods, their palatability and artificial intense flavors and high calorie density make the brain/body want to keep consuming them. This has been seen in zoo monkeys or other animals that get their hands on our junk food.

as someone who also has a chronic illness, an anti-inflammatory diet has saved me when my doctors gave up on trying to help me. I was in pain every single day, constantly so tired I could fall asleep within two minutes wherever I was and barely able to live anything resembling a normal life of someone in their early 20s. My doctors essentially told me "welp, tough shit, there's nothing we can do"
so I started researching and landed on an anti-inflammatory diet (which seemed just logical to me since I have an inflammatory health condition but somehow my doctors never thought of that.) Since then I've radically changed my diet and ever since I am ALIVE again. I'm barely ever in pain and overall my symptoms have decreased by at least 70-80%. Do I always love having to adhere to so many diet rules, no. But I know the alternative and I'd rather worry about eating right than worry about how I'm going to be able to have a job or a life when I'm sleeping 16+ hours a day and am in constant pain. I sometimes get really emotional because I still so vividly remember how _miserable_ I felt for years to the point where I had forgotten that it ever had been any different. And now most days I feel just so happy and alive. It sounds so strange to say, but I essentially felt like a zombie for a couple of years, it really feels like coming back to life and finally being awake again. Like seeing the sun again after a long dark winter.

i don't know why people are freaking out so much about this. i watched her harpers bazaar "everything i eat in a day" and it was basically a detailed meal-by-meal of what she eats, and from watching this recent clip i feel like her diet didn't change at all. she has stated in this previous video that she eats dinner early and that she doesn't like to eat breakfast (which i think it's really normal, in fact, i know more people that don't eat breakfast than people that do eat). she said that for lunch she's usually at the office and will buy food from someplace nearby or something like that, she also said that she eats a lot of one-pot dinners, lots of veggies, and that there's always a side vegetarian dish because her daughter is vegetarian. she stated that she loves fries and pasta and that she does go out to eat those (i'm assuming that she goes out to eat those on some weekends or when she's craving them).
maintaining a certain diet during the week because is what makes you feel good physically is not a bad thing. she doesn't have to say that she eats sweets or cereal every day just to make it relatable. she is an older woman that made it clear that she has health issues, and regarding this i defend her because my mom also started having health and stomach issues around gwyneth's age and she didn't take care of herself back then and now she has to follow a very restrictive diet every day to decrease inflammation.
people are too quick to make assumptions and completely ignore key points of what someone is saying (because she did say that she is having health issues, specifically inflammation!). we need to stop trying to shame everyone for choosing a different life than we would.

As someone in recovery, I hate the way people with eating disorders are treated like bad people who want to harm others. Gwyneth didn’t say “you should do this too.” She said it’s what works for her and what’s important to her. Which is really no one’s business but her own and that of her doctors. Thank you so much for making this video. I'm not a big fan of Gwyneth Paltrow and how much she has capitalized on harmful "wellness" practices for women (and I'm not excusing that, because it's reprehensible), but the Internet's response to her diet was off the rails. I was shocked by the extreme lack of empathy in everyone's response, especially since most people seemed to recognize that her diet could be a form of disordered eating, and therefore, probably NOT something that Paltrow is in control of. It stunned me that most people jumped on the bandwagon to shame Paltrow for her diet and appearance (even with the clear understanding that she MAY have an eating disorder), all in the name of "informing an impressionable youth" that her diet was unhealthy. To my mind, all that does is encourage the "impressionable youth" to be cruel to someone who may be in desperate need of help and empathy.

Thank you for changing my mind about this... I was quick to judge Gwyneth Paltrow too but your response makes a lot of sense... I also realize we are judged as women from the outside world pretty harshly and I was really quick to do it myself... A lot of people just jumped to a conclusion based off her body type and that really doesn't make it any better than one of these shame someone with a bigger body... I've been on both sides of this spectrum now and experienced judgment and comments whether I'm in a big or smaller body and it's exhausting... I just learned to tune everybody else out.... Thank you again for this perspective :-)

@@katiecopeland7934 There has been a long standing argument in the ED community that the requirement to be underweight for an anorexia diagnosis is majorly problematic. If I'm 5'1, 115lbs and starving myself, over exercising, fasting all day, and terrified to gain weight, am I somehow less anorexic than if I'm doing those same behaviors at 97lbs with a BMI that's technically "underweight"? The underweight requirement not only makes getting an anorexia diagnosis into some kind of sick achievement for some, but also stops EDs from being caught and treated early- something vital for recovery.
