      Liesl, you are correct. The creator of the video must have raised the temp of the room and is using a spray bottle to compensate for lack of humidity to avoid dire consequences. I am assuming.

    Hi Valentina! It is essential to spray with water during the hatching process as they need a high humidity particularly if you lift the lid (which is actually not advised). In the wild the mother duck would be getting herself wet and rubbing her feathers all over them. Dry incubators during hatching is the biggest cause of last minute deaths. We have had really high success rates this way, even with the lid off. Hope you have the chance to try one day 😊

    PSA Keeping the lid on for warmth and High Humidity is imperative for a full healthy hatch. Never open the lid until babies are completely dry. I've hatched thousands, and allowing warmth and humidity to escape any incubator is detrimental to hatch and health.

  • @avidahancock7363
    @avidahancock7363  10 років тому +81

    We were given them by someone who wanted the ducklings as we have had many good experiences with incubating and imprinting. They were apricot call ducks - very beautiful. We are always willing to hatch to order if anyone would like some special ducks. No charge - we just ask that they have a good home to go to with access to water.

    • @avidahancock7363
      @avidahancock7363  10 років тому +6

      Lexi Eisenback Well, we did have a rescue (wild) duckling who we raised by hand after the mother was killed. After a couple of years she got lost in a storm and now she comes back every spring just to say high - sometimes with her babies. I can't hold her anymore though :( It is lovely to see her wild. :)
      I do like to see ducks without clipped wings so they can choose whether to stay or go. If they choose to stay with you, I feel you are obliged to protect them from predators and care for them. Normally you can find someone to breed for if you don't have the space long term.

    Hi avida Hancock, I wanted to buy an incubator similar to yours. Is yours auto rotate? If I buy an incubator without the auto rotate function after how much time should I rotate it?

    • @avidahancock7363
      @avidahancock7363  9 років тому +2

      Ali Ahmed Definitely go for an auto rotate. You have to turn them several times every day (3/4) and it is quite important. Every time you open the lid to do this you risk changing the humidity levels etc. Good luck

    • @alaciamkensie1405
      @alaciamkensie1405 9 років тому +21

      The_Gaming_Kitty they need to do it themselves so they can gain strengh

    • @the_gaming_kitty753

      ok

    • @avidahancock7363
      @avidahancock7363  9 років тому +23

      The_Gaming_Kitty Alacia Mkensie is right. Also from my observations and previous mistakes I can see how much the ducklings develop in the last 48 hours. They are actually going through the process of absorbing the yolk sac into their tummies - this happens at the very last minute and actually continues after the first cracks appear. If a duckling is hatched prematurely the stomach will appear distended with a gooey sac joined to it. Sometimes this will correct itself outside the egg but it is far from ideal. I would be very, very cautious about helping them out of the shell. I think I know when this is necessary because I watch them very carefully for hours and days and have hatched many, many ducklings over the years. I wouldn't even think about it for 48 hours after the first pip.

    • @CROBlackDEvil
      @CROBlackDEvil 9 років тому +2

      +The_Gaming_Kitty they have evolved as animals to help themselves while hatching and breaking the egg, so you shouldn't really help them unless it's a really really really dangerous situation for a chick
      btw, have you got the egg yet?

    Its only tissue paper. It stops the eggs moving too much at the last stage. They need to stay in one place to unzip quickly. You shouldn't really take the top off, of course, it can ruin the humidity levels - the others could be a long time away. We were spraying really heavily during the whole hatch to compensate - but it is a bit unorthodox...Good Luck!! If you have kids, make sure they only see them when they hatch for strong imprinting effect!!

  • @torbjornstalberg9147
    @torbjornstalberg9147 4 роки тому

    Keeping the lid opened all this time lowers the temperature. You spray so much that the unopened eggs might get flooded and the ducklings drown and the born one wet and cold due to lack of the warm environment inside the closed incubator. Fortunately no blood vessels ruptured when you were forcing the eggshell. This is a video on how NOT to behave during a healthy hatching. Leaveing them alone is the best way to help.
