I love woodies in pots! Several years ago I scored these large 3ft tall pots from a nursery in January. After planting flowers and vegetables, we’ve used them as a bit of a nursery to bring in size for our propogated cuttings for cherry trees and our native hydrangeas here in RI. The hydrangeas are the best to date. ❤ On my patio this year I have a boxwood, dwarf spruce, and Japanese Sky Pencil Holly in pots and am loving it more than prior years of annuals. It’s fun to mix it up!
That sounds delightful! 3' tall pots are a great find... that size can be hard to find and/or quite expensive! I love seeing evergreens and conifers in containers. I'm sure your garden is a wonderful place to be.
Thank you for the very thorough explanation of the hanging basket. I have a large tree basket that i use like this every year. Experimenting with it every year till i get it just right. We took it down this year to stain our deck. My niece wanted to know where it got to. Enjoyed your thoughts on the empty pots. I actually did that this year with large ceramic pots and got compliment on just the pots. Quite frankly, I just didn’t get around to planting anything in them but they look pretty all on their own. Chanticleer is one of my favorite gardens. I too, was inspired by the pots of blooms and have the pond dye to give this a try. Really enjoyed the secrets to Chanticleer’s Gardens.
You're ahead of me on the hanging basket! I never have tried a big one, much less one planted like at Chanticleer. But it would be SO fun to start that. A good planter is its own reward for sure.
Very good topic. Containers really increase your options. I have two pineapple plants which spend the summer outside and the winters inside. I doubt they would have lived as long as they have were it not for the fact I can move them to the optimal environment for them.
very interesting insights👍. Can you pls. give advice wich shrubs or small trees are suitable for pots? I tried amalanchir that is doing well. Since my garden is very small i look for a small tree, to grow in a large container. Thank you, Susanne from Germany (7a)
Hello Susanne! I love Germany - have visited several times and find it a beautiful place with very kind people. :) I have a chokecherry in a planter which is a relative of amelenchier - anything in that family does well in a planter. I LOVE Japanese maples in planters, conifers in planters can give wonderful structure (sometimes they are picky on drainage which can be controlled easily with a planter substrate). I have an evergreen 'Chinese Princess' dogwood in a planter, which is a very interesting bonsai shape. I like flowering quince in planter, contorted filbert or other witchhazel can be a wonderful winter feature in a planter. I like smoke tree in a planter - they can get quite large but anything you put in a planter will naturally restrict growth, which can be helpful! I think overall, if you are wanting a small tree... try a Japanese maple. Their root systems are so forgiving and they can live happily in planters forever. XO
I believe the source is Kinsman (a UK company). This may or may not be exact model, but certainly close. www.kinsmangarden.com/product/London-Basket-And-Liner-Set-With-Hanger-24?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADwxtM_Pk1fNMdEJlgwIL8SHRmhmL&gclid=CjwKCAjwl6-3BhBWEiwApN6_knrO8T4YTJsUAP98dn-41i8QfMvipBOOfz9uoMeRiSl5X7CciHhX1xoCSaoQAvD_BwE

Does anyone know where to find metal hanging baskets like this?
