Nature is the great and elephant is the great of forest.
The elephant is probably deaf. Most of Sri Lankan lone elephants are deaf due to these fire cracker attacks. That's why he does not respond to those fire cracker sound, but flee from site when he see actual fire. Authorities does not care about these hungry animals. Almost all wet zone is inhabited by humans and elephants are left with dry zone forests which does not have enough food for these animals. Sri lanka need a plan to preserve wild life as all the villeges are spreading towards forests in a really fast pace.
Does it mean there's no zoning or it's a matter of corruption? I'd think there are at least national parks and reserves and this is a matter of a road going through such places.

The bus should have stopped the moment he saw the elephant, and letting it pass. It endangered the safety of passengers unneccesarily.

This elephant had been fed regularly by the passers by. Therefore it regularly comes to the road in expextation receiving food from passers by. So it was not crossing the road but waiting for passers by. Having seen the bus it would not have moved on hoping someone from the bus is going to offer some thing. The issues are
1. They become highly dependent on human handouts. They forage less for themselves
2. They loose fear of humans. Consequently they are not afraid of entering human settlements. We all know what the consequences could be for both elements and humans.
It's best to leave the wild animals alone. Admire them from a distance. Isn't it their wildness that we admire?

If you see some other videos here it is evident that driver have habit of offering food from their windows. That makes the elephant to feel people have food. So It didn't hurt them but was aggressively searching food. That's good and bad as well.

The bus driver was at fault by not stopping at some distance upon seeing the Elephant on the road. He has risked everyone's life for no reason
The drivers of these areas know when they blare their horns elephants go away from the road. That's why he did not stop, but according to onlookers this is a new one that came to road. You can't feed them, it will become a habit for them...what if a whole herd get used to this type of hijacking? I too love elephants, we have to take into consideration about the human factor too...
I agree with Guchda. It is us humans who need to learn to keep a distance in their habitat. And not feeding them is not the solution, there has be a better way for us to live alongside these gentle giants. They are not invasive, even a herd will never attack for food, this is all our fear. You can watch various footage of herds backing away from humans/vehicles. They are a reserved and shy species. Let's not exaggerate situations in our heads and be cruel to animals. Let us try to slow down and live peacefully with our animal brothers, even if we don't understand them.

This happens around the world and people feed even animals like bears. The difference is that they treat them with respect and keep their distance instead of approaching speedily and getting too close. We here have become savage, the only way our brilliantminds can think of is forcefully giving them a beating of firecrackers? And think we're wise... We don't deserve these beautiful animals.

We had the same problem in the U.S., with bears in Yellowstone Park. People would feed them, so the bears started mobbing cars. It became dangerous. They had to make it illegal to feed the wildlife, and put up signs all over the park; "Do NOT feed the bears."
