    You can listen to what the tape is going to sound like... You can listen to the sound after it's processed through the tape recorder.... You can adjust the sounds you want to record at the recorder...

    We had one of these when I was a kid. It was paired with a set of Sony speakers if I remember correctly. The speakers were made from a beautiful walnut. It sounded great.

      The 737 is an outstanding receiver...some of those Sony speakers can be sneaky good...same thing with Panasonic speakers.

    Nice video. Great receiver. I have the 727 moded for banana plugs instead of the original “Pioneer plugs” from the very early 70’s. I love it. I do like the lever power button of this series though, although my dial one is still working flawlessly.

      @@tiffanybluetarot I have mine on a set of Cambridge Soundworks Tower ii's (designed by Henry Kloss) in cherry. It's a decent speaker for efficiency and sound quality and can be bought used in nice shape.. and the surrounds don't have issues. They do quite well for what you pay. I have heard one connected to Bose 10.2 series ii set and was really great sounding too and went loud.

    I'm an electronic technician with 45 years of experience, and these are one of the easiest devices to work on.
    For those who don't know, a bad signal transistor will do a loud scraching sound, volume and source indépendant.
    Those are often black legged transistor, ( but not all black legged transistor are bad)
    It's a good thing to put more powerful transistor, or "bigger one" in the psu board, they will be more heat resisant. Just be careful as the pinout isn't always the same.
    Good luck.
    Edit : I'm not an english native speaker.
    And if you want to remove heat from the dial, replace lightbulb with WARM del light. These are easily available on ebay. They're more reliable than fuse lightbulb. Be carful not to break the dial pointer, as they are really fragile.
    It's always great to see these being taken care of. They deserve to be preserved because they are very good quality receiver.

      the 737 has many protection fuses. If I recall its boards are seperate and easily individually removable. I dont think it will sound the same if you replace with a higher value component. Something else made the original part fail. Its best receiver for its money for $50-100. any crappy little 1985-90 Yamaha m, ax or rx sounds better.

    Awesome receiver. One of the best looking and performing under 50 watt receivers you can buy. Exceptional build quality. Recap and replace transistors and it will be great for next 40 years. The Pioneers that came after this got progressively cheaper each year.

      @@ronaldfriedline9297 Have you tested the FM tuners in each? I had a chance to test these back to back a couple years ago at the hifi repair shop I use and the 737 brought in 5-6 more FM stations in stereo than the 750 did. The 750 needed a much stronger signal to get stereo for a lot of the stations.

    I am hoping to get one on eBay.
    It fires up and works but other than that I no clue what if anything needs sorting out.
    I have a tech guy who repaired a previous old Pioneer but it could be expensive.
    If I sell my unused Nad it might take the sting out of it. That’s if I win the auction.
    You never know it might be fine but I expect it will need some work- it’s the black facia Europe model.

    Watching your video on the 737 I have a 838 was wondering other than the Watts per channel how much of a difference is this between the two .

    • @millervintagehifi3034
      @millervintagehifi3034  3 місяці тому

      The 737 is kind of it's own creature. The 838 and 939 are similar, the 535 and 636 are also similar. The 737 shares some commonalities with both series (535/636 and 838/939). So it kind of depends on what 'difference' you are looking for. I'm not sure I know enough about the specifics of each model to really be able to answer.

      I'm partial to Bozak speakers. B302s, B401s, B305s...with Bozak I think that older is better. Jensen model 5s are also very nice speakers. Wharfedale W70Ds are great. As far as Pioneer speakers go, I'd look for some CS 88a/99a speakers for the 939.

    How long would a 50 year old piece of electronics ever hold up, no vintage seller offers anything but a 90 day warranty if that. The money these units are fetching is insane. I would much rather spend on new seems very crazy this stuff could go poof the day you get it home.

    • @DethFromAbove1985
      @DethFromAbove1985 8 місяців тому +2

      Make sure you have a good tech. If you get a re-cap and change a few transistors you are most likely going to be good for a long long time. Also if you take care of it you should be able to at least break even on it if you get a few repairs done. I'd love a 939. Marantz is getting to expensive. These units are fully repairable and the Schematics are available. With new electronics that's usually not the case with modern stuff unless its super high end. If you don't know what a circuit is supposed to measure how do you fix it? They might be able to replace a cap that's obviously broken or what have you. But they cut really give you a good tune up.

    • @jeffjohnson3504

      I guess you have to be in true hobby mode for these old receivers taking them in to tweak this or that or clean this or that. I like my 3 year warranty on my equipment.

    • @millervintagehifi3034
      @millervintagehifi3034  8 місяців тому

      I think someone needs to have a willingness to do a little 'tinkering' now and then. Much like anyone getting into classic cars, bikes, radios, watches, etc... There needs to be an appreciation for the fact that it isn't new, but that it has lasted (and could conceivably last) longer than new gear that has so many unique points of failure that often times cannot be repaired.

    • @millervintagehifi3034
      @millervintagehifi3034  8 місяців тому

      ICs scare me on new equipment (same with equipment starting in the late 70s)...IC goes bad and you're likely out of luck in sourcing a replacement. The genius that came up with training the consumer to expect no more than 3 years of life in a product (phone, PC, stereo...even a vehicle) has made these companies billions of $$ off of folks willing to just get a few years out of something...but on the other side of that coin...products are much more cheaply priced so at the end of the day it might not matter to an individual's bottom line.

    No not best deal for money. sears am 4658, sherwood 7200, sony str 7065, realistic sta 2000, harmon kardon hk 450. all better. as far as pioneer i would take a sx 3500, sa7500, maybe even find a newer vsa 9900 or 7500. the sx 737 is a slouch of an amp. its loud but not dynamic enough. it was an entry /mid level mass produced pioneer amp. not a good example of vintage sound imo.

      I wholeheartedly agree with any Sony, but I have a sweet spot for the 6050 over the 7065. Plus 7065s are getting a bit more love and have gone up quite a bit in price. Not a fan of HK aesthetics...never liked Sherwood or Realistic, but definitely grew up with lots of Realistic "hand me downs" that did the trick.
