This video is fabulous. I've been a traditional Franklin Covey users for decades but switched ti the Japanese Hobonichi in 2019. I've been looking for a hybrid solution for 2023 and literally just ordered last week a 2023 Franklin Covey (reluctantly). Oddly enough I searched for Japanese planners this morning and your video appeared..viola, solution for 2023. I'm an exclusive fountain pen user and Tomoe River paper is perfect for fountain pens.
Thank you SO much!! Happy Holidays!!

I used a classic ring bound Franklin planner for many years (over 25 years) and just switched to a Hobonichi this year. Appreciate your detailed video explaining everything you need to know about the Japanese Franklin Planner and how to order it. I love the Tomoe river paper and bound style. Will definitely consider changing back to the FP now that I understand it and how to order. Amazon Japan is intimidating for new users. Thx for the tip about using google chrome!

@@TonyaPlans Hi Tonya! Yes, I purchased the A5 cousin and also an A6 so I could compare them. The A6 is definitely more portable if you want to carry it in a purse. I also purchased the Hobonichi weeks. It’s also a cute portable size. 2021 will be the year to figure out what works best! I was glad to see in your video that FP also has the A6 size in the bound style. Thanks again for such a complete review.

I had no idea Franklin Planner had a bound organizer until seeing this. Switched from using the classic size Franklin for many years to an A5 Hobonichi Cousin in 2021 in order to ditch the bulky ringed binder. Love having a whole year’s worth of daily pages in one volume. Before finishing your video, I ordered the A5 Franklin from Japan for 2022. Looking forward to comparing it with the Hobonichi in the coming year. Thanks so much for publishing this video! I wish the US Franklin Planner website distributed the bound organizer too.

In 2022, I used the Jibun Techo B6 Slim Days. I love it - I can carry it in my purse, it has a line down the middle separating my to do list from my schedule, the paper is thin but durable. It's so easy to use. The main con for me however was that the grid spacing is very small. It is 2.9 mm. I am setting up a B6 Stalogy that I had cut down to B6 Slim size so I could use the same cover this year. The grid spacing is 5 mm - much more manageable for me. This is really tempting though. I love the combination of lined and grid - it looks so cool. Well done video!

Very thorough, informative, and interesting video! I’ve watched it more than once I confess. ;) I wish I could verify the tomoe river paper, because every video I’ve watched on this planner says its tomoe river paper, but I have Hobonichi planners and the paper does feel slightly different to me, feels like it has more “tooth”, but it could just be a different paper weight too. It doesn’t really matter because I did buy this planner in the B6 size and have been using it for a couple weeks. I absolutely LOVE it!! It’s exactly what I’ve been drawing out for myself and have gotten tired of doing-now I have a dated planner that does JUST what I need it to. I think I may have achieved planner peace... Thank you for being one of the few people who’ve done a video on this planner. It deserves all the love!

Nicely done! I think that last column on the week at a glance is a way of reflecting or making quick notes about the task (eg, A2 - call Mr. Jones about payday - [reflect] completed on Tuesday, but need further follow up)
The grid part beside the appointments is for Japanese character for notes. I like your idea of writing across.
I need my monthly index too. I use that to preplan in the next year as well as using it as a “table of contents” for this present month.

I was stationed in Japan for eight years and I picked up some of the language but not enough to hold a conversation but I do remember that most Americans mispronounce Tokyo as To-key-oh when it should be Toke-yo. With that said, Rokuyō should be pronounced Row-koo-yo.
Military/24-hour time is easy, just add 12 after 1:00 pm to convert standard time to military/24-hour time or subtract 12 hours after 1:00 pm to convert military/24-hour time to standard time, it's that easy. In the Navy there's no such time as 00:00 or 24:00, instead you would use 23:59 for end of day deck log entries and 00:01 for any events occurring at midnight that aren't part of end of day or new day standard deck log entries.
To make it a bit easier, just breakup the 24-hour clock into some routine occurrences:
08:00 Morning muster or start work
    10:00 Coffee break
    12:00 Lunch break
13:00 1:00 pm Afternoon muster or return to work
    15:00 3:00 pm Coffee break
17:00 5:00 pm End of workday
    18:00 6:00 pm Dinner
    20:00 8:00 pm
    22:00 10:00 pm
    23:59/00:01 12:00 am or midnight
When I make forms I use the lightest lines to avoid making it look too busy or hard on the eyes. Sometimes I make my own notebook paper for a clipboard also and the lightest lines are much easier on the eyes than using heavy bold lines, from a distance you can't even see the lines.
When I was in Japan I loved how just about every little shopping area had a stationary store where you could buy just about anything imaginable for writing from pens to planners and everything in between. There are some colored UniBall pens that are only available in Japan or online, most US stores only carry the standard color palette which is far short than what's available in Japan. I don't ever remember seeing a real stationary store in the US other than Staples, Office Deport, and Office Max which aren't the same as a real stationary store.
Great video again and look forward to next week's video.

    • @TonyaPlans
      @TonyaPlans 3 роки тому +2

😘😘😘Hello John! Thank you for the pronunciation of Rokuyō! It must be nice having the opportunity to live in another country with another language. It sounds exciting as I've never left the United States...well I've been to Jamaica and Mexico on vacation but that's about it. I would love to peruse a Japanese stationery store. I heard Japan is the stationery mecca! Sounds like heaven to me!
Thanks for the suggestion about subtracting 12 to convert military time. That will be helpful!

    • @JohnFourtyTwo
      @JohnFourtyTwo 3 роки тому +2

@@TonyaPlans You're very welcome Tonya and you're right about the stationary stores in Japan, they are a mecca.
I tell everyone if it were possible I would still be living there because the people are so friendly and the culture is so rich.
As for the Japanese language, it's similar to ours with vowels and consonants except their vowels are always pronounced the same, there are no hard and soft vowels. If I remember correctly, the grammar is similar to Spanish and the other Classic Latin-based languages. As for the written language, that takes years of practice to grasp and the only one I can remember is for Yokosuka, the city the Naval Base I was stationed at. The word rhyme to remember it is: Skinny man and a fat man watching TV while cooking on a stove, which is what the Japanese characters kinda look like, Yokohama is very similar except the character that looks like a TV is different and there isn't a stove. The joke we had was the characters for the TVs were a JVC and a Sony which is ironic since JVC is the American brand for the Japanese Victor brand. The JVC sales rep at the Navy Exchange gave me a brief history of Victor which included RCA, Panasonic, and National.
Here are a few of the common words I remember:
      Yokosuka - 横 須 賀 (the "u" is silent)
Yokohama - 横 浜 (a major city not too far from Yokosuka)
Japan - 日 本 (the Japanese pronounce it Nipon)
      Tokyo - 東 京
Shinigawa - 品 川 (a major city close to Tokyo and this actually means factories by the river and the only one I remember what it means)
Sorry for the long post, I can go on forever about this subject.

I'm 100% in favour of thicker paper with the minimal possible show-through. I think it might be an eye-sight/ageing eyes issue because, unlike you, I find it harder to focus on my handwriting if I can see ghosting from the previous page as well. The grids printed on these pages would cause similar distraction to me, by the way. Thank you for presenting such an entertaining and informative video, even though the product itself isn't one I'd use.

It’s awesome that you know what works for you. 😊

@@claireburk3801 Oh, yes, Claire, it can certainly work that way when the ghosting isn't too pronounced, but there's definitely a point where it becomes distracting to me. I learnt to just use pencil (refillable lead pencils). There's no bleed through. There's no shadowing. If there's a mistake, there's always rubber on the other end to erase it out. Would not be a problem on papers like these. (well, a new problem is that if you press too hard, facing pages get the carbon rubbed onto each other. but usually doesn't occur with HB or B sharp pencil lead.)

I sent a message to the Japanese Franklin Planner company to ask. If I had to guess, it will probably be out in September because that is when the Hobonichi 2022 planners come out and the two companies are in competition.

Hey. Are you referring to the weekly compass? If so, I’ve done several videos on it. Here’s the latest one: ua-cam.com/video/5OvLycY2bOY/v-deo.html

I just have a quick question does the erasable highlighters sold at Franklin covey
    Bleed
    Item # 68604
    PRICE: USD $10.50

Hey. These erasable highlighters do not bleed through the original or Carrara planner inserts. Taking off the top of the highlighters can be hard to grip sometimes.

Hi there. It’s not a “binding” planner. It is a “bound” planner. 😉

Hi. According to the Japanese website, it's called a binding notebook. See here: www.franklinplanner.co.jp/shopping/boundnotebook/
