Unfortunatly its not true in large corporations, lying is the best way to go around. I`ve seen so many people go up in large corporate enviroment by lying to their manager and backstabing their coworkers.
True. I worked in a major corporate environment for 17 years as a HR admin assistant. My boss, the HR Mgr, would shirk her job duties, delegate work, refuse to admit mistakes and worse, blame the innocent coworkers flr her shortcomings yet nrver failed to take credit for mine, and others' ideas. She became so hated and despised by not just the office staff but the 189 workers in the mfg facility that when she finally left, we threw a party. I'll never work in a toxjc environment ever again. It really taught me a "dog eat dog" mentality. And corporate America is chock full of beta males, backstabbers, ass kissers and "yes men" (and women)

I have a few points on this which were probably in thoughts but not explained throughout. 1. Owning problems is not always a "get free outta jail" -card, but most times it is. You make a mistake (and I promise, you will), you admit to it, are ready to face the consequences and basicly your boss would have a be total asstard if he kept complaining about it. 2. What's worse than addmitting your mistakes is, as Jocko put it, making up excuses. If you start putting the blame on anyone but yourself or invent stuff that made the problem appear (what everyone knows to be untrue) that is what people will remember. And boy, they remember it for a long time. Don't do that. I have some 15+ years of working experience in a paper mill and all this is very familiar to me, most of which I had to figure out myself. You can make very, and i mean VERY, costly mistakes in a paper mill. I have made a few but I was lucky enough to have witnessed how harshly the collegues remembered the stuff people had made up to cover for their mistakes. I mean there were some BRUTAL discussions. So I had decided that no matter how stupid of a mistake I made, I'd just claim responsibility for it and it has worked for me ever since. It's not like it's Navy Seal -type brutality but I guess the same idea should work pretty much everywhere.
Jocko and Echo, thank you, thank you, thank you. "Taking ownership" finally sunk into my understanding, especially when you mention taking "preemptive ownership". I have a question, though, what's the best strategy if you can't see it clearly into preventing the mistake ??? Thank you again !!! I'm a big, huge fan keeping on the path.
Obviously try your best not to make a mistake, but in the event of a mistake you weren't aware of, take ownership AFTER the fact, and make sure to watch yourself so that the same mistake doesn't occur in the future
Everyone is not in charge of themselves at your workplace. That could be a huge part of the reason for problems. Because they aren't doing anything to make things better for themselves and others.
Just guessing here... BUT I'd be willing to lay some coin down on it. If there's a "fault" to be taken, nobody seems to have a clue who's responsible for it. IF on the other hand, there's a "credit" to be taken, suddenly and mysteriously, there's at least one BOSS who damn well steps up to take that credit. Sound about right? I think I might've worked there, and it was about like that back then, too. ;o)
Take my word for it. There are those with titles and t hen there are those with jobs dude! And the former will always ride on the successes of the latter yet refuse to take responsibiluty when things go south.
If you haven't changed your actions have you really owned them? If you say that you own your actions with the anticipation of being relieved of the consequences of them are you not just playing a complex game of reverse psychology? Saying you own the actions in order to avoid actually owning the actions?
Come up with and encourage creative ideas to help influence things to be better, easier, more fun, enjoyable, exciting and rewarding to get people involved in ways that they can & will enjoy, feel and be enthusiastic about! I wouldn't agree with someone just because they're holding a knife. But if I didn't know the person I would first make absolutely sure that individual wasn't charging at me with a knife. And I damn sure wouldn't intentionally piss off a guy who would use a projectile ballistic knife on or against me. Because that's stupid and dangerous. Better to prevent those kinds of individuals from ever attacking me or anyone I care about in the first place by continuing learning and applying awareness, diffusing techniques, listening, and setting boundaries for myself.
