    Film wise, I'm editing a vid on my fave modern directors. This will be up in a day or two likely. (Please don't ask me to name the directors in advance, as I'm not going to).
    For those of you who are into the music here be sure to visit the Ager Games channel. I've just uploaded a couple more tracks on there with more coming soon (there's something like 40 tracks of this type of music in the game now).
    My original version of this song (before Gary's superb contribution) can be heard as track 4 in this video ua-cam.com/video/O5RAiV1Cazc/v-deo.html

      The original track was decent, but a bit repetitive and basic (it was a rushed production). My good friend Gary added quite a bit of nuance to the mix here. About 25% of what you hear in this mix is his input. I absolutely adore this version.

      @@JD-fm6ur I originally made this track using a crude program called Music 2000 about 20 yrs ago. I only did it to show someone how quickly and easily dance music can be made, so it took something like 3 hrs to do the first version. Wasn't even intedning to make a great track, but started to like the result and added some more layers then forgot about it and worked on some other music. Last year I went over all my old music and this one stood out for being catchy and easy to get into. Then Gary remixed it and I was blown away.

    If I tasted this tune like a fine glass of whisky, I would get heavy notes of the Fight Club soundtrack with undertones of NIN Personal Jesus. There was a sweetness of Cindi Lauper's Material Girl right around the 3:04 mark. The song had a nice finish with 8 bit synth lingering in the ears.

    But what made you think that in 2024 anyone wanted a top down scroller that looks worse than Smash TV which came out in the early 90's? But somehow worse?

    • @collativelearning
      @collativelearning  5 місяців тому

      Ok, you're massively over-exaggerating. Smash TV is a low res 2D pixel art game. My one is a 3D physics based top down shooter which has hardly ever been done before, and is significantly different in both look and gameplay - I haven't found any similar examples on the market. And it's got splitscreen co-op and multiplayer for up to four people? That's why the graphics of the game are being kept basic. Ever noticed the big AAA "realistic" looking games hardly ever have splitscreen, even though gamers are often crying out for it?
      The musical score for this game is far better than almost any indie game you'll find out there, in fact better than a lot of AAA games. That's not just me talking. I've had incredibly positive feedback on the score and sound effects and the responsive controls. The game hasn't had any bad reviews yet, but I've had a lot of good feedback about it being fun, fast-paced and challenging - including from industry programmers I've met who've given it a try. And that's in the early access stage. I've got quite a few unique mechanics going on in the game with some new ones in the pipeline that I've NEVER seen in any game before.
      If you just personally don't like gaming at all, or just hate top-down shooters on principle, or you're one of those gamers who is primarily just interested in having the latest next gen graphics even if the gameplay is bland ... then obviously the game won't be for you, but there's a huge market out there for all kinds of games ... Go look on Steam at games like Brotato. Now to me that game looks utterly generic in gameplay with the most boring graphical style (far worse than my game graphically), but it's sold millions of copies - marketing is of course a huge factor, but i've hardly got started on that yet. There are tons of games that look and play worse that have sold incredibly well. I'm already about 50% along the path to the game dev completion and already i'd rather play this than most other gasmes out there. This isn't just a bias thing. I've played this with other people, including kids who don't lie about what they do and don't like, and I've seen how much fun people have with it.
      But on a more personal feedback note, how you can have that kind of pessimistic, negative response? I've just gone, within 18 months, from no coding experience to fully programming an entire game myself, including sound effect and music, and using hardly any asset store elements (some indie games are made almost entirely out of bought game assets). If I see someone else putting such effort into something I would never try to s**t on their effort like that. What I would do is offer suggestions of how they might make their creation BETTER.
      So what I'm suspecting here is that you just don't want me to make a game at all. You want me to ONLY make film analysis videos for your personal entertainment (and for free??? Have you even bought any of my offline vids or chipped in on Patreon to support my work?). So because i'm branching out and doing a lot of other things, you're being negative and discouraging about it. Is that accurate? If it is then understand this. I'm not just a "film analyst". That's something I do, but I have done and continue to do a lot of other things, some of which are more important. In fact the film analysis are of the quality they are BECAUSE I've done so many things outside the realm of film that contribute toward it.
      I'll leave you with that.

I also specifically framed my critique as being just my personal interpretation, unlike the negative commenter here who seems to think I owe to them to only make film analysis vids.

    Been enjoying the game. Please add a meaty melee attack and remove the turn speed limit. Will make for fast paced twitch gameplay. Also, add feedback for damage caused. Make the enemy flash red when hit, or perhaps add a HP counter.

    • @collativelearning
      @collativelearning  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for your thoughts. Good idea about the enemy flashing as an indicator - I'll look into how to do that, though might consider some alternatives too. Might just do the health bars above them, though I'm trying to minimize UI elements. something I've become tired of in gaming is excessive amounts of distracting UI info and game pausing to access menus mid-battle. I want this game to have consistent immersion in the actual battles. Re: melee attacks - I'm considering adding several melee attacks the player can use with the camera zooming in for a melee mode with diff controls. The shotgunner already does a melee attack, the animation from that can be easily transferred to the player character to do the same.
      The turn speed ... hmmm. The problem with a fast turn-speed is it makes it harder to aim. That's ok for keyboard and mouse, but it's a gamepad interface game so the slower turn speed has worked better so far. But I'll take another look at it. thanks :)

      Game's nowhere near completion yet, maybe 50% of the way - am close to having core gameplay mechanics finalized, then need to make lots more arenas and enemies (which should be fast to do), but story mode will likely take up to six months depending on how in-depth i want it to be.
      So far I've really enjoyed making it, but it is incredibly hard work to do on your own. Do you have coding experience? If you don't the first couple months are a headache, but suddenly you start finding more and more of your code works and your scripts get longer. A lot of the time now I write a script and it works right away with no bugs.
      When you say you have the resources are you talking money, people? I was fortunate enought to have savings to tide me over a period of lost income.
