The Eros wins for me, hands down!. That gave it the old school Rev G feel and nasty as hell.
I didn't expect that Friedman Golden Pearl to sound so badass with the Mesa, for some reason. It sounded the best to my ears. Maybe the most versatile.
The KSR, Duality and the Mudkiller all great modern OD’s. Great video brother 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Good Idea! Thanks for doing this, Should be very helpful for Badlander guys out there. I'm looking forward to this.
Mudkiller and Eros! I may be partial though I have both. 🤟😎
That video was a great help for finding the best boost for my Badlander
I’m going with the Friedman 👍
Thanks for commenting. I glad you found it helpful. Great choice!
Very similar type pedals, I would go with the one w/ the lowest noise floor. Just need a little bump in signal w/ mids and clean up the low end 🤘🏽
Agreed. Thanks for commenting
these videos that show the best texture overdrive for amps is really good man . I'm running maxon 0d808 extreme on my archon mkII. and wow imagine an hiwatt bred with a stealth ...
These are the best tones I've heard on your channel congrats!
I’ve been using a Boss DS1 overdrive in front with my Badlander 25…. Sounds good 🤘 totally agree with the OD808, not a fan with the Badlander. That mud killer looks tempting… thanks for this awesome video !
Great Video. I preferred the Golden Pearl
Hey Jarrod, very interesting video!
It's true some pedals match perfect with some amps, whereas with other amps sound crappy.
I hope you'll make more videos like this!!!!!
Keep up the good work...
Thank you. I'm glad you liked the video. I'm looking forward to doing more like this in the future
I use a Mesa Flux Drive to boost a Badlander 50. I like the active bass and treble on the pedal. Works great!
I think an underrated OD is the Maxon OD9 especially over the 808 and Ibanez TS9. One day at MCG we took both the versions with the same settings and amp and the Maxon OD9 and more low end girth and midrange bite to it. I know some people say they’re identical, but I had witnesses for second opinions. After having the 808 and OD9 I would go OD9 for my preference. 🤘🏻
Thanks for commenting. Always good hearing from you. I want to give those a try in the future
KSR make some of the best sounding overdrive pedals for modern metal, I just wish their stuff wasn't so expensive. I have seen many pedals go way up in price too and I am glad I got some of my pedals when the market was better.
KSR pedals are completely made in house in the U.S. vs being outsourced to China. Something to keep in mind. I think the price is spot on, and they sound killer
I have used the mud killer for awhile and love how flexible it is. I bought the new revv pedal and that really goes well with it. I don't use the overdrive side of the pedal, but the tilt EQ is a game changer for me. I can use my OR50 orange for metal with that pedal. It really makes the low tight, and that is really hard to with most orange amps. But at the same time it keeps that thick growl the orange distortion is known for. Great comparison, really dig some of the other pedals I never thought of trying.
Tried out a bad lander recently. That’s a great amp. Fillmore 50 too, a surprisingly good amp, def not metal though. I like the architecture MB is using to get 3 different gain stages for each of the channels, very clever. As for OD pedals, only ever had the OCD. It’s wonderful
Hey Jarrod, agree with your assessments exactly. Each adds a slightly different voicing and character, so then becomes personal preference in ones rig. It was interesting that the Friedman is a much simpler pedal than the others, but added nicely that little bit while keeping the characteristics of the original tone of the amp! Out of all of the pedal, I really liked the KSR Rhoads pedal. Very cool and tone the way I personally like and with that amp.
Thanks for commenting. The KSR really surprised me as well. Very good pedal
Great video! i bought all three of your recommendations. Thx man!
Also, try the odd box. Its perfect with this amp
The Badlander is the lowest gain amp I've ever played from Mesa, this is a MUCH needed video! Also, because the Badlander has so little low-end, picking the right OD is critical otherwise you get into ultra-nasally territory. The Friedman OD sounded the best, but I'm surprised that the TS style held up. I was using a Maxon ST9+ and it just didn't work at all.
Thanks for commenting. after I did this video I ended up getting an odd box by warm audio. that pedal absolutely makes a huge difference with that amplifier. it adds so much low end back into the amplifier and the feel and sound is unbeatable when you use that pedal with it. I highly recommend giving it a try
@@TONEWARSgearshow thanks so much, I'm trying to avoid putting an EQ in the loop if I can :)
@@Soloist1983 My pleasure. I think that pedal will solve a lot of your problems
I have to watch this whole thing once I get the chance! But I am going to guess you will like the mud killer most. I love that pedal! But you definitely have to add the buxom boost at some point when you can, it’s awesome.
Eventually I plan on making a video comparing the mud killer and buxom boost.
Hope you’re doing well!
Great hearing from you Jeff. I've been looking for the Buxom boost and I can't seem to find one around here. When I get my hands on 1, I will definitely check it out.
fantastic and very well thought out video. new mic sounds great.
Thank you!!
Man that KSR riiiiips. I've been trying out the Fortin Tempest and early findings are- crazy versatile but definitely aimed squarely at big bottom end low tuned setups.
Yeah I agree, that pedal really has a lot of great features on it. Very versatile
I've considered selling my badlander 100 until I tried my duality dx in blue mode and everything at 3 o'clock, it add some low end, not to much high and gives it an aggressive push. I've never tried having the bass that high before but for this amp it works.
Thanks for commenting. A good pedal can make all the difference with an amplifier right?
I crank the bass on the badlander because it's so sculpted that it needs all of it, especially when you push it with a boost pedal.
@@TONEWARSgearshow boosts are huge! That's why I whish there was a little bit more low end or a resonance knob. I like a bright cutting pickup with lots of attack, I almost need to use a boost with every amp out there, and having only just enough bass from the badlander caused me to get a little creative with the boost. After I figured it out I've really came around and changed my mind on the badlander.
@@YTDarren0203 I totally agree. I boost every one of my amplifiers and I love shaping my tone the way I like it.
You definitely have to get creative with this amplifier. That's why I figured I would start with this one in this series.
@@TONEWARSgearshow as always you did some really good work, I'm sure a ton of people will find this helpful!
This amp is awesome, Badlander just great almost everything i guess but i wonder how good compared to Engl Savage Mark II. i hope you make that comparison happened. great job here thanks for the info!
Mudkiller or Eros
That's what I'm trying to decide
Mud killer!!!
Awesome Jarrod! Just started doing the same thing and will be for some time, just like Baskin Robbins touts 31 flavors and all that! Question did you mix up your mics or get a new one maybe...The recording sounded like some of your best if not the best, so defined big and rich!
Thank you. I'm glad the recording came out good. I'm using the same mics sm57/Royer 121. I'm using a new vocal mic Rode Go2
@@TONEWARSgearshow Maybe that's it! 😂👍
@@SuperCMO79 less room reflection with this mic
Mudkiller made that badlander sound pissed off
If you liked that, you would like the odd box. it makes it sound bigger and Fuller as well as meaner
@@TONEWARSgearshow love it!!!!
I've been using the Pepers Dirty Tree. I keep coming back to your Mud Killer capture on my QC. The Dirty tree kills any string articulation for me and is just too noisy in DT mode on any level.
The dirty tree doesn't gel with every amplifier. I found it to be quite noisy with certain amps on my rack.
@@TONEWARSgearshow spot on!
Hey Jarrod, I believe you are running the 6l6's in this amp correct? that may be something to mention if they are different than the stock El 34's, just a thought.
That is correct. I meant to mention that in the video but I forgot lol
is it just me or does this video have lower framerate?
why don't these guys show their amp settings?
He did. 4:56
Earthquaker Devices Plumes on mode 1
Thanks for commenting. When I get my hands on one I will check it out
No SD-1?
Hopefully next video. It would have done well in this video
@@TONEWARSgearshow thank you for all you doing, man! Best content about high gain stuff on this planet. Try out sd1-w, its a little cleaner and tighter , the buffer is significantly better too.
@@ЖоржТокарев my pleasure! I really appreciate the kind words. I'll try to find one for future vids. Great suggestion.
Nice video as allways, but still with the choppy frame-rate. Looks like 15 or so.
Yeah it says it's in a 30FPS-container, but you realy don't see that internaly it's much lower?
The camera itself is prolly set too low while recording.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll look into my settings.
