  • In today's video, you get to come along with me to Austin, Texas, for the AMSA Premed Fest! You'll see behind the scenes as I talk with Enrique Jasso Jr., Associate Director of the Texas Health Education Service, about TMDSAS and more. You'll also see clips from the talk I gave all about the medical school interview-and my one-on-one advice to premed students at our table and meetup!
If you found this video helpful, be sure to subscribe, hit that notification bell, and check out all our Meded Media podcasts at premedpodcasts.com!
Here are some of the topics we covered in today's video:
    • Why does state residency matter so much for Texas medical school admissions?
    • Why is Texas med school tuition so affordable?
    • Why did TMDSAS add a question to the application about whether you're a nontraditional student?
    • What should you do with your "optional essay" on the TMDSAS application?
    • What kind of story are med schools looking for in your application?
    • What is the TMDSAS med school match system, what is the pre-match, and why do they use this system?
    • How do medical schools evaluate you as a potential member of their upcoming class?
    • How do you tell your unique story in your application rather than making generic statements?
    • Should you tell jokes on your med school interview day?
    • What specific kinds of questions should you ask your med school interviewers?
    • What does research experience do for your med school application, and how can you make up for a lack of research on your application?
    • What's the difference between having a common story and being cliche in your application?
    • How important is shadowing for getting into med school?
    • Will a gap year help you get into med school?
    • Is the LizzyM Score too reductive to help you in the application process?
    • What are the advantages of meeting and talking with other premeds at conferences?

Utah has one every year. I was the chair of it one year - it was an awesome experience and got to see a lot of people from different states and a lot of different schools. It is called the Utah Annual Pre-Med/Pre-PA Conference.

Medical School does not want perfect students. But, do they want a perfect story?
