I know this is crazy old and you will never see this, Mike, but I really appreciate you leaving the waterfall "fail" in. It makes me feel better. Also....and I say this from my heart, you really should leave the waterfall in! I LOVE the way it looks cut open, and the drip will not only be hidden by plants but it is, you know, how nature works!!! I absolutely LOVE what you did, and it gives me a lot of ideas for my bioactive viv I'm working on.
Why why why did you stop?! The random water drips is what makes it look authentic! Still loved your video and now I’m going to give it a try so thanks for the tutorial!
Mike Tytula idk if u read this but i need help, okay so basicly the room temperature is at day 19,5°c here. at night it lowers a little bit. at summer at a realy hot day its 22 to 24°c what light i need to higher a 20 gallon by 5°c ? and if its 24°c in our house at summer is it oksy to turn the light off? or do the dartfrogs need the light at all time. i also could buy a fan in the summer.
Hey great video it teaches a lot to a beginner. I was thinking the dripping was ok because in nature everything is not perfect. I think its important to have imperfections just as much as perfections so it dont look to fake. I guess im speaking from an artistic point of view. thanks for the video
I specifically watched this video to get an understanding of the waterfall, then when you are almost done, you change your mind. Anyways, at least I learnt a few tricks and tips. Good video.
Hey Mike! I have a question for you. I'm turning an old 75g into a vert converted vivarium for my tokays, but I've been trying to wrap my head around how I'll heat it properly. My target ambient temp is about 85, but a heat lamp on a screen top wouldn't penetrate heat down 48", and heat tape on the bottom/back might not make much of a difference with a thick layer of substrate and a DIY foamy background. Think a small waterfall feature and reservoir with an aquarium heater in it would be a good idea? If I had toasty warm water in the drainage layer that should keep it nice and warm, right?
I would have a ceramic heat emitter, it will be tough to achieve the 85 ambient though. All the things you mentioned are good but honestly I would just try and keep the room temp around 80 that way there isn't too much of a drop off.
I too had problems with leaks in my waterfall. But I didn't give up that fast. It took me a bunch of swearing, lots of beers to calm me down and stubbornness (which I'm known for), and two weeks later everything was working just fine without a single leak. Yes, two weeks. Building your own background with waterfall feature takes patience. Lots of it. LOL Cheers. Ps: isopods are to be found everywhere in the yard here, by literally the millions. LOL Of course, not during winter (nowhere to be found then), but by that time I already have a good established colony in the tanks. And yes, they are equally safe to use, provided that the soil you gather them from has never been sprayed with toxic products.
i have to admit i skipped arojnd a bit but good video! i missed how and what exactly you did with the usb powered fan in terms of where it got installed or built in...., can you expand on that a bit for me? building my first viv and this wasnt something ive considered yet
Very nice video, an easier but messier way that I do to cut egg crate is to use a large heavy knife and start cutting a row of squares out and then once you have it started just chop down with the heavy knife like a butcher knife and you can cut maybe 10-15 squares at a time. They do fly everywhere though. I'm also glad you didn't put as much foam in this tank, it looks very nice :)
If you are just going down the line straight try a large screwdriver to break it out fast then clean up any problem spots. Little safer than a big knife and the roundness of the rod keeps it from digging in and going a different direction.
Mike, Next time you build a waterfall maybe you could use some plastic pipe and cut it in half? Just a fan trying to help. These things are frustrating when they don't work.
Do you ever have problems with the frogs, or the crickets hiding inside small crevasses, driftwood, or the corkbark? Especially the crickets hiding, preventing frogs from eating them? What are some things you do to prevent this? I am about to start my first terrarium for my RETF. I love this video. I am going to be adding a waterfall as well. So, thank you so much for this!
Didn't realise it was a 45 minute video until it ended and you said thanks for watching this long video and i checked ;) Wow can't believe this took you 2 1/2 months. Have a great christmas Mike.
an oscillating saw is fantastic for trimming foam with speed , hand tools when you have to ,like near the glass or where you cannot get with the bone saw
Question is the fan for air intake or outflow? I have a trio of white's tree frogs that i am planing to do a large planted vivarium for and I have never seen a fan set up in one before.
Have you ever thought of building a freestanding vivarium without a tank? I know you wouldn't be able to house animals but I think it could be a cool concept for a tropical foliage display, especially if you incorporate a repti fogger to maintain humidity. Might get around to trying it myself one day!
Hi Mike, great video as always. Just after a bit of advice please. I'm currently building an 85g dart frog vivarium and I was pondering about the addition of LECA? I have got a 4" high false bottom and was planning to have the water about 3" high under this, to feed a waterfall system. Is the LECA really needed with a false bottom or not, or can the substrate go straight onto the egg crate layer? Many thanks in advance.
@Mike Tytula oh noo I didn't see this comment back when you replied, that a shame that you guys can't get hold of them, they are super handy and hopefully at the time of my reply you can get them I love your videos BTW, I've used them for many a creation ❤
Hi! can you tell me what thermo-hydrometer you have? i've read so many things and people are always complaining about the fact that they don't measure things correctly. Any recomendations?

ive watched tones of videos of this title but this one really explains how to build a working vivarium warterfall setup. but what wanna know is does it work for a bearded dragon
A waterfall in a beardy cage would introduce to much humidity in the system and might cause respiratory infections. I'm not saying it can't be done, just have to be careful
If you're going to be covering it with silicone anyway just get the cheap expanding foam and save a bunch of bucks! When you cover it it makes it safe for the animals so the "Great stuff expanding foam" Is perfectly fine and cheaper if you're just covering it with silicone anyway :)
Can this be used as a crested gecko cage? I'm just asking because I really want to get a crested gecko and I feel like I would want to do something like this!
i've very recently been interested in getting myself a crested gecko and i want to go right into it by going by a bioactive set up for the gecko, do you have any videos or tips for it??

Just learning all about making a vivarium. We have a Cuban Tree Frog. Nice to see tips and tricks from someone in Canada! Thanks.
Glad you enjoy! Good luck!
Great tutorial.. I'm looking at building a Waterfall viv. Thanks for sharing 👍
Right on! Good luck!
The vivarium is looking great!

Still a girl :P
Chips Ahoy Shit haha! I knew some one was! couldn't remember who it was! My bad!
learning so much from you. got tons of bad bad info and lost so many frogs because of it. I am starting over all my tanks after watching your stuff
What were you told? And by who??
A fish and rep store locally. Said they need to be at 85 degrees or more. And that they didn't need dirt. I'll send a photo of my current tank.

I put a Venus fly trap beside my tank it seems to help a little bit

Habistat have really nice tanks now, they flat pack, I just got a 90x45x90 for my cresties and its lovely!!

Wow! Great video Mike! I really enjoyed it! You sure know how to really make a good VIV and have had a lot of experience by the look of it.
Thank man! Glad you enjoyed!
Merry Christmas 🦐
Merry Christmas man!
can you do a set up/care video with links to the wood, decor, etc.
I'll be making a new vivarium video very soon!
Great video! Where do you order your plants?
Depends where you live
Lmao my mom used to use the term "free balling it" to refer to not wearing any underwear. Sode note this video has been very helpful!
Haha yup! I use that term as well
Good vid. What are your thoughts on using old fish tanks for frogs or vivariums? I am taking fish tanks that have covers and lights already on top.
Doesn't work, you would have to make a custom glass top
I thought so. Is that the same as making the glass top you have made on your tank in the video?
Sorry I got confused, I meant to say making a custom top with a mesh or glass with holes or plex glass?
Great video Mike!
How cool haha
this is the 1st layout of you I really like! nice! shame of the not using of the waterfall
haha thanks!
Great video! Saw the whole vid!
Glad you enjoyed!
How did you get the water fall to work? I know you used a pump but did you just run the hose to the egg crate or how did you do it
I believe I show it in the video
This was fascinating!! Thanks for making this video :) really helping with my current creation hehe
Awesome! I hope you like the build!
@@MikeTytula I really do :)
Try to use more silicone and small rocks like the lower half of the waterfall, it'd be really nice to see it actually working
I have used so much silicone man, I'm done haha
m8, i was not even serching the warerfall, but that is exactly what i need!!!
haha well I'm glad it worked out!

What plants do u have growing on your cork bark? And why do u need the 2 sets of bugs? Awesome vid
The invertebrates serve two different functions. And I grow mostly epiphytic plants on the cork tubes
Mike that si awsome!!! I've got a question how do you keep the water in the pond not get stagnant?
Because it's constantly recycling through the pump down the waterfall
But you said in the vid that you weren't going to use the Waterfall so it is not recycling through the pump.🙂
Great vid!
Thanks!

I wish i was like you, i have no money so i cant get equipment, edmonton has no good reptile stores. Ughhh your just so talented.
You can get animals shipped up there pretty easy, and next weekend there is a reptile show in Red deer which is worth the drive

I'm building a waterfall in my vivarium, do you recommend buying an external filter to clean the water?
If you can plumb it into the ssystem then it's always a good idea

Sick vid dude after Christmas when I get home hopefully I can start my build
Good luck man!
Question on the mix you used for the back on the silicone: what were the substrates you used (including brand names), and was what the mix ratio of it all?
This was purchased the mix that is, So I mean I'm not 100% sure
for all the work you did on the waterfall i would still use it. the dril could stop once the wood expands after being wet.
I might! It's hard to say!
Is it possible to put Salamander's in this type of set-up?
Depends what kind of salamander and you would need either a large water dish or a pool
Mike Tytula It is a Fire Salamander.
Is there an alternative to the Jungle Jewel background you'd recommend? Because they don't ship to the states.
Theres a bunch of mixes that you can find in the states, like NE herps or even make your own.
When you did the waterfall did you use any tubing or did water rise to the level you wanted and it went down the actual corkbark logs?
The water was going where I wanted to but it began wicking over the edge so I decided not to use the waterfall.
Did you use a hose line to the pump and ran it up and out or just free moving water in the tower before going to the log
Nope there is a pump and hose and stuff
ive watched tones of videos of this title but this one really explains how to build a working vivarium warterfall setup. but what wanna know is does it work for a bearded dragon

Nice setup. I am getting into keeping dart frogs and your videos have some very helpful information that has helped me.
That's awesome! I'm glad you enjoy!
What was the stuff you put over the egg crate? I heard weave block, but I searched for that and couldn't find it.
Just look for window mesh
Landscaping fabric works as well, & most hardware stores carry it.
Great video
Side cutters would work much better than the wire stripers, for cutting the egg crate. You may want to give that a try.
I will check them out! Thanks for the recommendation.
@mike can I use tropical mix bedding for my background and can I also use it as subtrate ?
Make sure it's completely dry
Mike Tytula OK ty Mike!
Could you plug the drips with silicone?
Wouldnt work
I don't understand what you did with the fan, can you give a quick explanation. Happy Holidays!
I basically mounted it in the chamber so it will circulate air
If you're going to be covering it with silicone anyway just get the cheap expanding foam and save a bunch of bucks! When you cover it it makes it safe for the animals so the "Great stuff expanding foam" Is perfectly fine and cheaper if you're just covering it with silicone anyway :)
A lot of time you miss some of the foam and it shows through with bright yellow.
@@MikeTytula Oh that's valid, I just go back over it anyway, for me it's worth saving the money.
Fair enough!
Can this be used as a crested gecko cage? I'm just asking because I really want to get a crested gecko and I feel like I would want to do something like this!
Ya can modify it to be perfect for a crested gecko.
thank you so much
Glad you enjoyed
does the water pump filter the water or will a fish tank filter work as a pump
No there is no filter on that one.
awesome video and thinking of doing a waterfall in a crested gecko terrarium with a waterfall in a couple months
and merry christmas
Merry Christmas to you as well!
Cake the waterfall with a tube of silicone let it dry then another layer for your substrate. It will work.
haha I appreciate the feedback but I already shut that pump down and stuff!
Did you have to modify your braker or electric to support your room? What is the bill like?
No I think they are on two separate breakers though.
nice video thanks for entertaining us n hope you have a merry Christmas
You as well my friend!
great video as always dude you are really putting out quality content!

I really appreciated that video. A lot of useful information in there. Some great handy work too and creativity. Very well done!!!

Where did you buy that silicone from?
Local hardware store
And I've got a gray tree frog which is 1 1/2-2 inches long, but I've also got four spring peepers that are 3/4-1 inches long can I put them all in a 12x12x18? And if so will they eat each other?!?
No I recommend keeping them separately.
Thanks!
Put something like a piece of pond liner down under it and then glue it down and that should help where it's leaking
That would definitely have done the trick
when will you move the dart frogs to their new home and will you make a video about the move or not?
I will be making a video haha
