For a brief second I forgot we were talking about album covers when Brian said "I can't think of one really strong Depeche Mode album actually... Violator was OK" ... whaaaaat?! Oh, you mean the cover of course, lol!
There's no content on UA-cam where we can peak behind the curtain like this on such ICONIC art! Thanks Vaughan for orchestrating it and thanks to Brian for the refreshing honesty! I enjoyed every second of that.

Brian - your DM album covers are indeed iconic. As a DM fan in his teenage years in the 80s, I appreciated the depth of your images and the feeling they projected and still do. They speak so well to the dark romanticism DM was gravitating toward in their music at the time. As in any great art, they evoke more questions than answers; their mysterious quality forces us to imagine what they might mean. In the interview you mention you don’t know why you put tulips in the Black Celebration cover. I think it was a juxtaposition used to express dark romanticism: the dark foreboding building foreshadowed by flowers was used to capture this mood. Regarding what happened in terms of why DM stopped using you....I’ve seen interviews with Dave saying that Anton “saved them”. I think he was referring to the band’s transition from being 80s synth pop icons to surviving pop music’s transition from being largely synth-driven to guitar-heavy grunge in the early 90s. The band, as I understand it, were very concerned at that time that their days were numbered. My guess is that they thought they could no longer afford to take risks in their image as their sound was being supplanted by bands like Nirvana. Yet I’m not entirely sure how Anton’s work helped them “weather the storm”. Anton seemed to continue in the vein of your previous work, perhaps with less abstract imagery. I consider his work as a more commercialized continuation of your brilliant work, not a replacement for it. Without your covers, he would not have had enough understanding of the band’s music to pull off the covers he created. Regardless, I have much respect for your work for DM and your artwork in general. Brilliant work is often misunderstood by those who have no idea what great art is. Thank you so much for making sure they stay in the dark.

Amazing video, Vaughn - I'm glad this is not the last that we'll see of Brian.
I particularly liked the idea of the reflections - if the building is one, this suggests that it is looming behind you, a perfect ominous atmosphere. If parts of Brian's studio are being reflected in the image of the building, it as if the building was towering over everything in front of you, but somehow fitting within the studio, quite surreal.
Looking forward to part 2 of the album review!

I think Anton's collaboration with DM has given the band a more cohesive visual identity, which they lacked up until that point, or didn't find it was needed. Anton not just desings a cover, he designs the stage and all the visual aspects of a record and tour, and some of the videoclips. And certainly most fans identify with the iconography of Anton's, if only because the band became more popular during the Violator and SOFAD era. While the band used some 'icons' related to the album covers (a hammer, a loudspeaker etc.), they didn't have the identity of Anton's work.
I'm looking forward for an episode on the 'Only when I lose myself' video clip!

Makes me also think of how the band wanted to change their video presentation which was also letting someone get creative on their own, only with worse a far outcome. That said I not only loved all Brian's work but I like the use of simple symbols that seemed to start here and the carry on into Anton's later designs. Almost wonder if they gave Brian the "Bong Speaker" idea what he would have done.
Again thank you Vaughn for this and always great to hear from Mr. Griffin!

I hold Brian's work with DM as highly as I do with Saville and NO, and NO is my favorite act of all time so it's great to see Brian's thoughts on that revolution of album art into actual art. The sad thing about the money machine that was DM back in the days was that a lot of amazing stuff wasn't as treasured as it is today, Brian is a treasure and it's always a delight to see you talk to him and now hearing his side of the story it's honestly sad hearing the darker part of that album behind the scenes. I agree with Brian on Anton, I respect both their work, especially their unique flair for the bands output...but as of recent years Anton's work is just absolutely bland and abysmal to me.
Thank you Vaughn for doing these videos and giving (in my opinion) a far better retrospective for each album than most of the officially released documentaries. Thank you Brian for being so honest and candid for us, you guys are honestly what keeps me coming back to the topic of DM.

My 2 cents.... the tulips represent how I have always felt about DM... let me TRY to explain... their music at its best (to me) answers questions like 1) Can there be humanity amognst the machines? and 2) What organic elements can there be/exist in the sterile, post-modern world of technology, etc. I am not sure if this is making sense but... listen to the songs and look at the album cover... that is a perfect example of what I mean. That cover is stark and cold (in a good way though) to represent the "modern" world or as Martin (I am sure he said this line) "Life in the so-called space age". The songs are even stark and "cold" at times. Not in a bad way but not in a folksy, 1970's (lets all love each other, hedonistic way either) way either. This album will sound modern and futuristic in a 100 years. Now... think about Martin's voice cutting through (and Dave's too of course) all that technology... so human... so vulnerable at times. This is the answer to my questions posed above. YES we can survive a cold, sterile, stark world of technology and "space age". Martin's lyrics never offer easy solutions but they somehow give meaning to meaninglessness.... "though it's not love it means something..." He is writing to attempt to explain the "world we live in and life in general" I know that is another album but anyway... he is the perfect post-modern lyricist... never offering trite, easy solutions to big questions... almost to the point of nihlism but never taking that full stance (i.e. cop-out) either (*cough* *cough* NIN). Again there is always somehow hope amidst hopelessness or at least compassion and wonder. So very long story short... we will survive. You could almost say EMO music began with this album but that is diminishing the brilliance of DM.
Some fun facts (to end this treatise .. I apologize... for indeed if brevity is the soul of whit then verbosity is the soul of sh**) I just added that part! HA! Axl Rose loved DM... Scott Weiland of STP said this is the best album of the 1980's and I believe George Michael wanted to do a cover of A Question of Lust. Shame that never happened...

Wonderful interview !!! Thank you Brian and Vaughn ... Really enjoyed this ... I thought the tulips were used to add something authentic ... I never knew it was a model, until after watching the series that you showed Brian in this video ... So perhaps it was some added trickery to fool the viewer and give the whole composition a more realistic look ... Whatever the case was Brian, you had me believe it was a real building ... Brilliant !!!

Fascinating behind the scenes discussion Vaughn. I'm curious, at any point was Brian asked to find an actual building to photograph. And, obviously for many technical/financial reasons was the idea to just utilize Brian's model of the building a way to avoid fees/license agreements/permits/logistics with either the architect or building owner if an actual building was found that was desirable? It feels like the end result of the image for a Black Celebration may have been due to time constraints. I can only imagine that Brian would not have been blessed with a massive amount of time to produce an image for the cover because (and I'm assuming here) he'd be one of the last steps in the process for delivering the album, which was probably either past or coming close to a production deadline and/or "street date" for being released to the record stores.

My interpretation of the Black Celebration album cover was that it was supposed to look like both a Cathedral(I didn't notice the banner at first and thought it was the sky) and an apartment block/penthouse.(Adding to the Gothic atmosphere of the album) It made me think of the way society was beginning to integrate technology, advancements in luxury and isolation into itself. (Which is like something out of a JG Ballard novel, very similar to what Gary Numan's songs were about) which to me made sense as it worked with the lyrics of Stripped. Despite the sensual undertones, it (is also very relatable to me) was about a character who wants to pull this person away from what society is becoming, to want something deeper and more real than what the latest advancements, luxurious penthouses and "social events" were offering.
Listening to New Dress while looking at the album cover made me think of American Psycho (it is chillingly effective if you take the chorus of the song Stripped literally) the main character in his penthouse/place of worship, noticing the Prostitute outside has put on a new dress as he sharpens his bonesaw.
This was definitely where Depeche Mode became a lot darker and more powerful and impactful. The original idea of the Fascistic elements is fascinating to. That ties into the lyrics
    "You can't change the world
But you can change the facts
And when you change the facts
    You change points of view
If you change points of view
    You may change a vote
And when you change a vote
    You may change the world"
Very reminiscent of the 1933 Elections with Hitler.
Great video Vaughn, it was wonderful to listen to the conversation :)

This may be a little bit of a stretch, but the tulips in the foreground reminded me of a German poster for Blue Velvet. I was going to ask if Brian was inspired by that imagery, but as it happens Black Celebration was released a few months before the movie. Maybe just a coincidence, but it's interesting to me that the message is quite similar. Beyond the beauty looms drear.
Seeing the image as it was originally intended has left me feeling short changed. It's breath taking, honestly. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. If I hadn't seen your original intention I would have thought it to be one of the lesser covers. The "powers" that be really missed the mark and did you and the band a disservice. What would have been a stark and beautiful continuation of their visual representation was reduced to nothing more than a promotional tie-in. Propaganda with a bubble gum wrapper "collect them all" type feeling. I would have preferred it Stripped. The symbols, while not terrible on their own, have continued on with the band and served them well, but they could have featured on the inside jacket, labels, and subsequent singles with the same desired effect. I'm already envisioning what it would have looked like if the title/font for the album was embossed in black just below the border as to not detract from the image. The image itself already captures a lot of the dark themes of this album, but when you pair it with the title, and to a greater extent the title track, it just takes it to that next level. It would have conveyed everything you needed to know about what you were about to hear. This is completely lost with the cropped colour version, when it should have been blatantly obvious.
Brian, how is it possible that you delivered something so perfectly to spec and didn't even realize it?

Now that I found really interesting !!! Love the behind the scenes stuff. Will never look at my DM album covers the same way again. Would love to know the stories behind the DM album titles. I quite like some of Anton's covers though. MFTM , VIOLATOR, PTA are a few ones I like. But I can definitley appreciate the artistic skill/flare of Brian's work.

A thing that occurred to me after understanding how this photograph was made is how similar it is Speak and Spell:
    - shot in studio
    - use of transparent material (plastic and glass)
    - both have a floral element (plastic wrapping used by florists, tulips)
    - both were controversial/disliked by thr band at the time but turned out to be timeless
Also, despite Brian not giving in to the literal request of having banners hanging from the skyscrapers, the image really has a menacing, dark feel to it and can represent many things, even corporate greed, conspiracy. It would have been too one dimensional with the Nazi banner type of treatment, imo, so it turned our for the best. The weird aspect ratio even work for some reason!

Really interesting conversation, thanks. Looking at the DM album covers after Black Celebration, I'd agree that other than Violator (and perhaps the 86-98 and re-released 81-85 ones) they're not very memorable, but then as cassettes and CDs replaced LPs, and downloads then came in, maybe there isn't the incentive to put a piece of art on cover?

Great interview! Though I like Brian very much, I completely disagree concerning what was "good" or "bad" in terms of covers... Of course "A broken frame" was a great cover, but in my mind, it didn`t represent the music at all. Not a big fan of the other covers from the early 80s. But MFTM, Violator, SOFAD, Ultra (!) and also some of the later covers like Delta Machine I personally like very much, and I think they do represent the music, the atmosphere, the style in a brilliant way!

Some people have claimed the buildings on the Black Celebration sleeve represent the two buildings of the World Trade Center, with the two glowing orange sections located in approximately the same relative positions as the planes that impacted them. Toward the center left side of the image, there appears to be an aircraft colliding into the building. Below that, the buildings are tilting at an angle, as if they are falling. The gap between the two buildings looks like thick black smoke rising from the buildings that are aflame. Tulips could depict flowers for the fallen. Depeche Mode also posed for pictures at the top of the World Trade Center on 9/11 of 1990 - exactly 11 years before the fateful day. There are also 11 tracks on this album. This is not to suggest that Brian or DM had any foreknowledge of the event - inspiration comes from beyond this realm, in the same way the ouija retrieves its messages.

Fantastic and fascinating video Vaughn!! Atkins definitely came across as a total dick in the remastered documentaries. From what I’ve seen of them both, I can’t really blame Brian for not getting on with him. As an experienced artist it must’ve really grated, being told what to do by a cocky young chancer whose attitude was way bigger than his ability.

*toast* to Brian and you Vaughn 🥂 Always so interesting in hearing Brian talk about the photography on the album covers. I wish that the Black Celebration album cover could have been more creative from his side, but it sounds like he was boxed in by exactly what he needed to do which is horrible not to be able to use Brian's talent to the fullest. It would be interesting like you said to have seen what Music For The Masses' album cover would have looked like if Brian had done it. Anton's cover for Music For The Masses isn't great at all (I like some of Anton's stuff but for me it seems a bit unoriginal... having said that though he has given DM a look, if you will, that in their earlier years might have been missing, but I don't think that missing that look was a bad thing and personally they could all be wearing dresses, I am here for the music and the album cover is just as important, its the first thing we get before listening to the album... Not saying we only buy albums because of the cover but they do visually give us a vision of what might be coming or something like that [my fingers can't keep up with my train of thought]). I am an amateur photographer and I think I could have done better for Anton's first album cover (okay that might be an ego stroke). An interesting exercise would be to see what Brian would have envisioned based on the music in that album. I look forward to seeing Brian again soon and I look forward to the Q & A. Vaughn thank you so much for bringing Brian into our homes and giving him an opportunity to tell us about his history and Depeche Mode's history. I *toast* you both again 🥂 I apologize for the long comment, cheers!

I wish you could have Brian too take a look at each and every of the following album covers, vaughn, however i understand, as a professional and artist, Brian would decline to comment on other people's work, i just love him, he is not only an artist, hes a very down to earth person, and very honest too, i love him alot, hes a grand master, and i fully believe what he was saying when watching martin atkins talking in the doc, martin even said himself in the video 'we had no clue, but' ...but, he (martin) had no clue.. thats what i got from it, Brian was so criatively limited on that one, but still made an awesome cover, i love Anton's work, i think he is great, however, Brain is a different kind, hes a Master and DM should have stick with him, but i respect Brian's choice to not be imposed with people and demands and limitations to his criativity while doing his work.
About the video, the production effort is skyrocketing, getting really very professional, you should think about making a big documentary about DM, putting all your videos regarding them into a sole DVD/Blu-Ray in HD i would happilly buy it, lets get real, this was better done than many major TV channel docs around, and even the ones we buy when we get the official DVD's from the band, your work about the band has been far more complete than all of those put together The interview and video was just brilliant my friend, just like always, i Ask you please, invite Brian to be around for the ride, as long as it doesnt costs you money for it, hes not only a English inconic photographer he is a great gentleman and i love to hear his stories, i think whoever is a DM fan loves Brian Griffin, for his genious and hard work.

I've come to really love and respect Brian from your videos. It does sound like he was being self sabotaging because he didn't like the idea, as well as the politics behind the scenes were obviously taking a toll on him. And if he feels like Anton or Martyn were using pastiche and cheap marketing tricks well what can I say, it worked on a dilettante like me. Not to mention the many other people who were sold on the DM visual identity following his departure, which I feel Anton especially deserves a lot of the credit for.

Every DM album cover/art was a re-invention until Anton started doing his brush stroke work in 89 and replicated it ever since, and I'm bored of it just like DM's sound since Exciter. Therefore I find Brian Griffin's DM's work has more impact on me.
I need to buy some Broken Frame prints too. Brian, Dave Bascombe and Vaughn have reignited my interest in DM. More so now that he has a EMAX. Get in! 👍
