Tom Hamilton is Cleveland's radio play-by-play guy. He's done Wisconsin football and Ohio State basketball as well. He's been doing Indians/Guardians baseball for over thirty years, all the way back to the Herb Score days.
I was listening to Tom Hamilton yesterday and thought he was really good. Didn't know who he was until now

When people are not hired based on talent, but rather on other non-job, superficial criteria like race, gender, and others, this is what happens.

Haha
She's got 90s shock jock voice.

I wouldn’t say people hate her. For me personally I don’t dislike her personally. She may be a very nice human being irl, but in terms of being a play by play, she’s not good, at all. She doesn’t know what a ground rule double is. She doesn’t know the outfield positions. These are very simple baseball things that she doesn’t know. That’s a problem. It’s not me saying female announcers suck in general. I personally think Doris Burke is a very good broadcaster. But the A’s announcer specifically is just not fit for the job. U gotta know the sport to announce it and it doesn’t seem like she does. Plus, it’s also a bit dumb to say people dislike her bc she’s a woman. I’m sure some people do, but I think the majority of people just don’t like the way she broadcasts. It’s the same thing with Joe Buck. Tons of people hate on that man bc he often times makes very unenthusiastic calls in very big games and seems to show clear bias on nationally televised games. So clearly it’s not just bc she’s a woman. Granted Ik some people say she sucks simply bc of her gender, I’ve seen comments even say women shouldn’t be broadcasting at all which I think is stupid. However the majority of people seem to dislike her simply bc she’s just not good at her job. That’s my take
I HATE her so stop talking about what most men feel. Oh. I see. You're a simp.
Nope we hate her. She’s terrible at her job and the bar she sets for female commentators is low.
Exactly
Wrong!!! ITS BECAUSE SHES A WOMEN AND DON’T BELONG ON THE MIC IN MENS PRO SPORTS PERIOD
I agree with your comment.
She’s sounds like Ash Ketchum. There you go she could voice act for kids shows.
Sounds like the regular play by play guys letting his college student daughter call it for grins for half an inning.
As a long time A’s fan here, having her as our announcer was just another example how ownership has no clue. They ruined a great sports town in Oakland
Advice: Just use your real voice, not what you think an announcer should sound like.
I was just thinking about this the other day. If you actually watch A’s games you will understand how horrible of an announce she is. It’s almost like she has no idea if a ball is going out or not on any home run. It’s the least hyped I’ve ever seen a play by play announcer.
What you are referring to, she doesn't have much experience calling plays. After a while you get an inward feel for how long a ball is hit and you can pace your call to see if it leaves the park, etc. Experience is a premium here, and she doesn't have much of it. That's why she struggles. She probably should have done minor league radio for several years to get that "feel".
Absolutely horrible.
Her calls are bizzare, and sounds like she hasnt ever heard any other announcer. Its not like she cares. You can tell she doesnt care.
I wouldn’t say that necessarily, but if you’re referring to her maybe not having a genuine passion for baseball in the way that some of the best in the business do, then I’d agree.
You can tell she’s forcing it a bit, and having the bubbly sort of tone along with a lack of genuine passion makes for something that feels very off putting.
She doesn’t know baseball
All female play by play announcers are awful.
I love sexism too!!
Sexist take, I like Beth Mowins, and there's a few other ladies who are okay.
Especially in a sport that is dominated by men.
At no point has any normal man ever said "You know what would make my hobby better? Listening to a walk talk over it"
Eh not all of them are bad. Some of them I enjoy hearing. You’re taking it a little too far now
There can be good female play by play commentators, but let's let it happen on merit, not make it happen because "it's historic." People like Jenny actually do a disservice to other actually qualified women out there.
They are no qualified women for the role
people dont want female play by play commentators though. that's the thing. no matter how good or bad.
No, there cannot.
@@xe042 There's a reason for it. They're awful.
There aren't any. Name one.
I don't think it's Jenny Cavnar's fault for the false enthusiasm. Let's be honest: We're talking about the Oakland A's. Is there *anything* to be enthusiastic about currently in Oakland?
Their closer. That’s about it. He probably won’t be on the team for much longer though.
i mean they're only like 6 games back, just comin off a 5-run 11th inning to walk it off. definitely exceeding expectations
I disagree, there is always something enthusiastic to talk about every team. A play by play announcer should be passionate for their team, regardless if they win or lose. That’s what separates the good from the bad. Also, Every team has good players, even the worse teams.
She was on the Rockies post game show for a minute and seemed to be a fan.
Well, she's not making it any better. She's terrible.
I should probably abstain. As a Dodger fan we have the talented Joe Davis and for most of my life I listened to some guy named Vin Scully. Standards in broadcasting are a tad high here so I couldn't be fair to her. LOL
Scully was a National Treasure. LA was blessed to have that man's voice.
EVERYONE JUST REMEMBER it’s a deep drive into left field and that will make it a 4-0 ball game
As an old fan who has listened to hundreds of broadcasters, I just wish women would stop trying to emulate male play by play announcers. They should use their normal voice and develop their own style.
Jenny isn’t all that bad in isolation. What’s much more problematic for her is when she’s compared to the A’s (largely) home announcer this season - Chris Carey. When you listen to the two of them back-to-back, there’s simply no comparison. Chris is - by far - more naturally talented at this.
Why is that problematic? Chris Carey is 24 years old and had only been calling games professionally for 18 months before this season. Jenny’s been at this for 15 years. I’m sure it helped for Chris to grow up in a family of announcers (He’s the great-grandson of Harry Carey, grandson of Skip Carey, and son of Chip Carey.)
But nepotism be damned….he’s really, really good. And unfortunately, Jenny suffers in comparison when so much natural talent is right there in the same booth.
She is the best female commentator I have heard and I cant stand her.
Hahahahaha
How about all the guys who've been paying their dues calling minor league games for years who didn't get the opportunity and she gets a major league announcer job? Not fair at all.
It feels like watching college softball
Omg. Her voice, tempo and guessing on these calls. Absolutely awful.
Obviously a political move. What do you expect out of California?

DEI...nuff said.
"It feels artificial like a performance" - Dude. Joe Buck called a quarter century of WS games with less enthusiasm than this lady ever could. She sounds perfectly fine.
Joe Buck is a disgrace, I understand the significance of the "we will see you tomorrow night" after the walk off call in the 2011 World Series, quoting his dad, but his tone and delivery was just so lame and lazy. He's horribly boring and unenthusiastic.
Most people would say anyone else but Joe Buck should call the World Series
Using Joe Buck as a comparison doesn’t do her any favors lol. It doesn’t make her look any better.
I personally have no opinions on her. Some of the calls in the video were a bit iffy, but every announcer has iffy calls. The problem I have seen some commenters bring up is the fact she doesn’t know much about the sport. Which would be a big turnoff. An announcer should know the game they are announcing.
My post was about him saying she sounded artificial. None of what your reply to me has anything to do with what I posted about. Joe Buck, being the poster child for artificial just a performance play calling, is the perfect person to compare her so called artificial play calling to.
She’s ok. I respect that she doesn’t express fake enthusiasm when there’s a home run.
So you don’t get hyped for a HR? Are pop ups more exciting for you like she thinks?
@@Zackb1010 I get excited, of course…some are more impressive or game changing than others, though. Depends on the context. What I meant with the enthusiasm is that she’s not going overboard
The A's have been my team for 33 years. I now have the displeasure of listening to this insufferable woman every away game. Thanks a lot affirmative action.

There is no good school of broadcasting any longer. The past two generations of broadcasters all seem intent on a) sounding alike; and, b) putting the audience to sleep. It's the Thom Brennaman effect. Brennaman would have made Bobby Thomson's home run sound like a pop up on the infield. Joe Buck was little better. I was fortunate to grow up in Chicago listening to Jack Brickhouse, Harry Caray and Ken Harrelson. Never again will we hear broadcasters like that.
Hawk was awful
Harry Caray was terrible. Like having Biden in the booth.
Harrelson was THE worst!
Rare Thom Brennaman reference as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos.
You said it. We sports fan in Pittsburgh are extremely spoiled in this regard. Pirates fans have had an unbroken line stretching from Bob Prince (We had 'em allllll the way) to Milo Hamilton (Here are the happy, happy totals) to Lanny Frattare (And there was nooo doubt about it) and now Greg Brown (Raise the Jolly Roger, Pirates win).
And Penguins fans were treated to over 40 years of Mike Lange calling the games (And Ladies and Gentlemen...Elvis has just left the building).
We have been very fortunate.
It’s not a glass ceiling when we live in a society that demands and produces equity at the cost of quality of competency. Also, let’s not forget that she is one of many examples. For example, former “disgraced” mayor Megan Barry was the first female mayor of Nashville. She also stepped down due to misappropriation of funds and an affair (all-related).
In something as dumb as baseball--which I love--why is competancy more important than equity. I think equity should dominate on all jobs that basically don't matter. Now, surgeon or midwife.... equity should not be a large factor there. But, literally, as much as we love baseball, how good or bad or qualified or equity-based the announcer is MEAN NOTHING IMPORTANT TO WORLD AT ALL. "Oh my God, the Gaza got a ton worse because MLB hired a woman who doesn't sound like an bumbling Taylor Shift fan when he calls a home run." Poor us.
@@jmaggio909 spoken like a true ignoramus.
Baseball is entertainment. It brings value to living. Helps make life worth while. We don’t need it to survive, only to thrive. The same with virtually and sport or art.
In that sense, we do need it. And when it comes to being the best of the best (MLB), we should expect it in every aspect. That includes the commentary.
So yeah. I disagree wholeheartedly. Competency over equity.
Also, the principle of equity is flawed. As a concept. Equality of opportunity is one thing. Equality of outcome is ridiculous down to its very core.
So yeah. Competency and qualifications over diversity and inclusion. I stand my ground.
Oh and lastly baseball is not dumb. Just goes to show how un credentialed your argument truly is.
I Googled "DEI hires," and ended up here.

What do you expect when you hire people for political reasons instead of being the most qualified?
Yeah, like when the NFL hired Dennis Miller and Rush Limbaugh.
@@jmaggio909 You mean when Rush dared to criticize a black man (Donovan McNabb) for not being as good as the sports media said he was? Rush got fired for being honest. Stupid take.
The A's are famous for that. They did make a good hire in Johnny Doskow--now there's a guy with tons of experience and he sounds good.

DEI hire and you can't hire a minority because shocker, people don't care about race in baseball. They thought bringing in a female announcer would give them liberal brownie points nut the people online bitching everything is offensive aren't the people watching games. That's why the Indians were more popular and sold more tickets than the Guardians. Not onlywas she just hired because she's a woman, she's also terrible at her job, doesn't know enough, has a horrible voice and does terrible calls. They got the Padres ex media woman instead of someone with actual experience calling games, or at least bring up a former player if you're gonna hire someone without experience.

Calls were a little off, but this is her first season. No egregious errors that I’ve heard so far. Neither have I heard that much complaints. Disliked? Maybe. Hate is too strong
I’ve gone out of my way to watch a few A’s games with her on the call. She’s alright, not the worst I’ve seen but leaves a lot to be desired. One thing I did notice was that it felt like she was trying to call every game like it was a neutral broadcast, and that’s not a quality that I think a good individual-team broadcaster should have.
Apparently I'm onn the gammmmmeee. Apparently.
She seems fine to me
She's the Leah Hextall of the MLB
I can’t stand women announcers. I find almost all of them shrill and too talkative.
Suzyn Waldman is one of the greatest announcers in all of MLB.
What I hear is someone who's going through the motions and doesn't seem mentally vested in the team they're covering. There's no passion in her voice, and it doesn't feel like she actually cares.
I get the sense she lacks the natural but necessary talent of knowing when a ball is crushed at contact.
Wow glad she doesn't vall Card games
Not a legit fan. I could do better
Ok, it’s not great, but I have heard worse. Cherry-picking a few calls doesn’t tell me anything. Seems like clickbait.
As a longtime Rockies fan, I could have warned you about this. She got her start with us as a sideline reporter and I never liked her doing that. The few times she was put in the booth I couldn’t take it, I had to put the tv on mute. It made me appreciate our regular PbP guys a lot more. Everything sounds so forced with her, she’s always a second behind the play and when she tries to act excited her voice just gets comedically high pitched. It’s a shame on two fronts: 1) Kuiper was a great announcer and part of a Bay Area family that has owned baseball PbP in that area, and I think he was treated unfairly because it seemed like a genuine mistake; 2) There were WAY more qualified woman announcers who deserved that honor, Jenny had zero experience short of filling in the booth a handful of times for our Rockies games.
Also worth noting: I’m not certain she was the best pick to hire as a sideline reporter for the Rockies in the first place. It seemed to me that there was some twisted nepotism going on. Her father is the baseball coach for Regis HS in Denver, a private school with a VERY competitive baseball program. Kyle Freeland graduated from there. As the head coach for one of the best high school programs in Denver, her father had a close relationship with the Rockies front office, it’s easy to assume he helped her get her foot in the door after she graduated Colorado State with no real experience, and a voice clearly not made for sports. Nothing sounds natural coming from her, it all sounds like really bad acting.
Poor A’s fans, as if they didn’t have enough issues as it was. If they just had better owners and a more graceful city council, they could have built a new stadium and not have to move to Vegas. With all the money in the Bay Area, it’s a shame cheapness caused them to leave town. They had a lot of great history there. 🫤
The bay area is horrible. It's like all the blue hairs the Giants have for ball boys. Wasting precious time and it's quite frankly dangerous for themselves and the players. If you get a woman, get one that has wit and a deeper voice. Nobody wants to listen to this lady.
I don't hate her as a person. I just think she's an absolutely horrible announcer.
I'm not remotely impressed by her "battle against the odds", because she VERY clearly got hired solely on the basis of being a woman, not because she's any good at her job, or sounds like she even wants to be doing the job.
Should've never fired the guy before this, I don't mind female play-by-play announcers, though. She's just not a very good one.
Wow how embarrassing this is the FIRST woman to be a play by play announcer. She’s the worst I have ever heard 😂.
She is the worst gave the worst call for the last out of the A's game they should have had the legends commentate so the final out had some iconic and we can listen to a someone who really loved the game
I'm sorry, female announcers play-by-play in male sports is terrible. I get it but it's just awful. What makes it worse is the fake news voice.
It sounds like when they hit the long ball she is waiting to see if the outfielder is going to turn around to watch it go over the wall before she says it’s a home run despite the ball headed towards the upper deck. Her voice makes her sound confused. I hope she improves by watching some of VIN Scully replays.
Be honest with yourself commenters, even if she never made any mistakes, you’d still hate her.
Not true. Fenway Park had a female doing batter intros for a few years. She was excellent. So good, I never thought about her being female. It comes down to can you do the job? This girl clearly cannot.
