Stephen King is in fact over rated.
I would love to hear you talk about Faes and the Fairyfolk and how they evolved from genuinely terrifying creatures to the cute little troublemakers we know today
Yes
It’s kind of like monster blood drinking vampires to the hot and shiny ones.
@@samuraijackoff5354 Another amazing topic for a future episode tbh (or multiple xD)
As a Scottish person, AYE PLEASE
The differences between Fae folk between Ireland, Scotland, Wales, European countinent and so on would be great and fascinating to see.
You have underestimated the amount of time I will listen to a lecture of Yokai, I need more.
NHK made a great episode/documentary on yokai (and bakemono) that should still be on UA-cam, if you haven’t seen it.
It's a drug for my ears
There are more my friend.
Me too
6:21 watch out fellas...
Im in recovery and have severe PTSD and anxiety depression etc etc and I have frequent panic attacks. These videos help me at night time when my head starts going, thank you so much guys, keep up the amazing effort !!
Bless you, best wishes on your journey
I hope things are well with you❤️
Yokai are great. My favorites are the kyōrinrin, a sort of dragon made of forgotten scrolls and documents, ōmukade, a massive man-eating centipede, and the woman riding a flaming wheel, whos Japanese name escapes me
Wanyudo
A kyorinrin is an awesome design waiting to happen
A kyorinrin seems like the creation of a paper pusher who's procrastinated for too long and has to catch up with all their missed work now lol
Okay this is a bit of a random question, but since you seem to know a lot more about yokai than I do, do you mind telling me what (in your opinion) you think the most famous ones are? I am trying to make some characters based on yokai and I want to get the most popular ones down first before making other characters. Sorry if this is a lot to ask. I'm 13 btw. :)
I like Umebozus and giant hungry skeletons
Minamoto no Yoritomo and Minamoto no Yoshitsune were descendants of Yorimitsu, who is mentioned earlier in the video. (The fictional Genji in the Tale of Genji is a member of the same clan -- 源氏 [Genji] means "Minamoto [源] clan [氏]".) "Morimoto" (森本) is a completely separate name.
Also, "Mie" wasn't a province of old Japan -- modern Mie Prefecture roughly corresponds to Ise Province.
Get home from a bad day at work. Turn on the UA-cams, and OMG it's Mythillogical!
Day saved!
I love these epic length explorations of mythological categories. But Crofty really needs to adjust the gate on his mic, lower the threshold slightly and reduce the attack time. It makes you sound mumbly and hard to understand. And you have such great information to impart!
I was listening to the Baba Yaga episode and every time crofty talks my brain is like, "Dude, clear your freaking throat. You sound like you have an actual frog in there."
Your mate has an unusual, soft-spoken style. It's cool.
When I first read this, I didn’t know this was a UK based podcast and expected it to be a husband and wife team.
@@leonchalHAHAHA
In regards to the tale of the Oni and Momotaro in Shinto religion, for those interested the game Okami quite beautifully illustrates it with multiple references to other yōkai throughout :)
Also in regards to Tengu in Spirited Away, Yubaba could be depicted as one with her ability to turn into a humanoid crow and being the protector of the bathhouse
Love that game and all of the references to yōkai. Great soundtrack too
Been playing a bit of nioh 2 recently so I wanted to get some info
Go to bio they have info on every yokai you fight
Same... kinda.
Hah same
I love your videos a lot! Your videos actually help me with history class in school and inspire me to do some sort of history major in college when I graduate highschool
I hope you do it. I found my interest in history and mythology later in life and wish I could go back to get a formal education in this area. ☺️
here's a handy, super easy cheat sheet for anyone who's ever been unsure how to pronounce a japanese word:
just remember that the vowels pretty much always sound the same, no matter what. so if you can pronounce "samurai", "sushi" and "nintendo", you can pretty much pronounce every single japanese word. a is always "ah", o is always "oh", u is always "ooh", i is always "ee", e is always "eh". there are really only those five ways to say them.
so when the vowel is elongated without an apostrophe, just pretend you're saying it for slightly longer, like it's accented. and if there is an apostrophe, just pretend you're saying the vowel twice in a row. "o'o" is "oh-oh". no hard stop, just say it twice. otherwise, just make a short vowel sound ad you'll probably have it right. japanese as a language is far less arbitrary than english. the rules are the rules. and now you know them. kinda. close enough.
even accents aren't hard to learn. of course, r's and f's and such are a little different than they are in english and may take some practice, but for most things if you just speak the words in the front of your mouth, like you do when putting on a spanish accent, you'll be pretty dang close.
I absolutely love these videos, I really like Crofty, you guys are great, awesome episode, I learn so much whilst listening and relaxing
16:09 Woah! Princess Mononoke just became even more awesome!
Yōkai are so incredibly interesting, i really like the Sagari which is the spirit of a horse who dies on the road and is left to rot. The spirit rises into the trees, particularly hackberry trees, and they drop down in front of travelers and whinny or scream in their faces.
Kinda disappointed that the Chinese interpretation of 妖怪(yaoguai) wasn't mentioned. Journey to the West is filled to the brink with them.
well, i guess theres a part 2 then
lmao
Thought yaoguai was just a post apocalyptic bear lol
I sincerely appreciate these long form discussions of these topics!
Nioh is a game that is really closely centered on yokai, with a really nice encyclopedia entry for each. Nioh 2 also has a pretty good outline for the unification of Japan, but then again so do approximately half of koei tecmo's games.
I listen to this episode every night to satiate my racing thoughts before bed- thank you Charles and Crofty for both calming and educating me, you guys are the best :)
Me too. I feel like I'm being read a bedtime story by PhDs. Glorious.
Im in recovery and have severe PTSD and anxiety depression etc etc and I have frequent panic attacks. These videos help me at night time when my head starts going, thank you so much guys, keep up the amazing effort !!
Thank you for helping me survive through my office job with these podcasts
I love studying Japanese ukiyoe art. And I came across many a story related to yokai. Thank you for your work
Please do more of this podcast. Its really nice and calming to work to
Amazing as always! I really appreciate all the work both of you do to create these videos for us!
I love you guys and the research you do. Thank you.
You’re the greatest historian in world history Histocrat!!!!
This episode was really great and I appreciate your narrative work. But please Histocrat, either raise your gain for your recording or get a different mic. Your low and high end are rough to listen to, especially when listening to the non-english pronunciations. Thanks for your work.
japanese mythology is exceptional in that it can evoke mystical elements of our consciousness, it's way more thoughtful than greek mythology and rightfully so because it evolved millennia later, they are not just tales of basic instincts.
Thank you for yet another addictive lecture that helps me through all the full time shifts at my office 😅
These guys are awesome, thank you for mythillogical
2:01:45I'm getting flash backs from many battles against the headless in sekiro: shadows die twice If you know you know.

I'd argue the most likely place that westerners would know the tanuki is tom nook from animal crossing
smb3
Volume is terrible and inconsistent with the first guy talking
Japanese always come up with the weirdest and creepy creatures. I see these and totally think Dark Souls or Bloodborne
Histocrat, my friend. I would highly suggest that you organize your videos (chronologically) into playlists. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
You had a section on Kappa and left out the most famous example of them, the Koopa from Mario are based directly on the Kappa, not to mention the Tanooki suit from SMB3.
So glad I found this one ❤ my dad was covered in this and he was a wink wink read between the lines type guy😂 he put me on the path from a very young age
So the crazy people that said pokemon is demonic were accidentally right...
Hey you should look at the anime Mushi Shi. Very interesting take on this subject and educational for an anime
Another Mushi-shi fan! I adore that anime, is so beautiful and calming, but also fascinating!
“Moving on, now that we’ve alienated most of our audience…” That’s a good line 😆 Lol
time to go to gensokyo
I wish you guys would bring back the mythological series I'm waiting for a mermaids episode! Especially with Disney working on the live action of The Little mermaid it could really bring a lot of traffic to your channel. Plus is just an interesting topic
citations up front we love to see it
I could listen to Crofty read the phone book lol. There's something about his voice that's so sweet and gentle 😂 I listen to y'alls' podcasts to go to sleep lmao

Nice art. Are they arranged?
hengeyokai are changeling creatures. from the verb henkan sure = to transform to change form.
the famous Kitsune yokai is a good example as they often took the appearance of humans, often women and also sometimes having only 1 leg.....differences between Yokai, Yure, Majin, bakemono, mamono and Oni are thin for a westerner and hard to differentiate.
Oni were actually not demons but a clan of mage ogres who lost to the demon clan and got "incorporated" under the Majin class (demons) I hinge everything g I can find on yokai and the spiritual creature of Japanese lore, so thank you for that lengthy video full of new knowledge!
Just gonna get my yugioh cards out for this lesson.
Also, when you brought up Steven King, I was sure you were going to bring up It. An undefinable entity that takes up the form of your greatest fear.
There must be a joke of "Shimon bar Yōkai" somewhere but I don't know the best way to make it
Here for one piece research 👍
I like how the concept of Yokai is akin to a mythological genus applied to spooky creatures
Anyone seeing this who found this super interesting, there is an apple arcade exclusive game called "World of Demons" that is based on yokais, it is very very fun and silly in the best ways. AMAZING combat game for mobile.
Could somebody please tell me where this concept of Yamata no Orochi as a dragon comes from? I’ve always seen him referred to and depicted as being essentially a giant snake with 8 heads (though admittedly his heads are quite dragon-like in some traditional depictions), and the kanji compound for Orochi literally means “big snake.” I looked up the Japanese Wikipedia page, and the character 龍 (dragon) doesn’t appear once. Is there an native Japanese association with dragons, or is Orochi as a dragon just another western conceit being projected on to a foreign culture?
Yamata no Orochi=Eight heads Large snake
concept? It may be interpreted as "the incarnation of the flood". The theory is that Orochi represents the dragon god that controls water, and Kushinadahime represents Inada. [2]
Physicist Torahiko Terada states that it is reminiscent of lava flows. [13] In connection with that, Yamata no Orochi represents the pig iron that flowed out of the furnace with "Nodara" iron making, and it expresses that the marriage ruled the clan, so the subjugation of Yamata no Orochi is "Nodara". There is also a theory that it expresses the fact that the iron-making clan was ruled under control and the iron sword was presented. In fact, many ruins of "Nodatara" whose era cannot be specified have been found in the mountainous areas near Izumo.
6:21 watch out fellas...

remember to study this Kameha
Oh a 2 1/2 hour video on yokai. Fuck me.
Deserves 10* the views
Imagine if you will, where a trickster might ask "what are you most afraid of"... and someone answers "white shirts".. the terror.. for it is I, one who is both compelled and in fear of white shirts.. because they always attract curry or tomato stains.. I need a wash bear tanooki to save me. (nice series BTW, sorry for the weird comment)
Yokai Watch!
I was hoping y'all would mention Naruto while you were on the topic of the kitsune, since one plays a central role in that franchise. I actually appreciate the story a lot more now after learning the history of the kitsune in folklore from this video.
Great listen otherwise!
😸well done🐭
6:21 😂
Ain't nobody gat tajm fo dat.... 😂🎉😂
I am surprised there is no anime of a Zorro as this fox spirit.

Yoooooooooo
im expecting at least 1 pokemon reference going into this
that’s pretty cool, but what about the part where they shoot colourful laser patterns at you when they want to eat you
are you referring to the part where you have to dodge fireworks and that is so difficult to dodge that if you can, then you should also be able to dodge rain?
@@ssjcrafter8842 Only if it includes being auspiciously split into two continuities when reality’s hardware progresses into a new stage of development
Just stumbled upon you guys, and you're both great, but Crofty, my dude, clear your throat some time. Sounds like you're keeping an actual frog in there. Or maybe it's your mic or something else idk...
Thanks 👹☸️☯️
Im amazed you didnt talk about super Mario. Mario 3 has a tanuki power up, koopas are obviously kappa
Who thinks Robert Eggers should do a Yokai tale set in the Heian Period?
40:56
Do you see it

Apparently, medicine was a far more dangerous profession in feudal Japan and its practitioners were far hardier.
Hein period, I wouldn't call it peaceful, especially if you looking at those whom produces the goods that are taxes, the farming region, there were constant famines, food scarcity and mass hunger, despite decent foods production, this is because most of Feudal Japan are owns by the Royal family, and other lands are being sold as private lands to nobility or warlord.
It was a horrible times before the peasant populations, despite wars doesn't happen as often as say the Sengoku periods.

The best horror is when it's left up to your imagination because that's always worse than some written description because then you can start working to understand it. Lovecraft > Steven King
Ghostwire Tokyo is all about Japanese culture and yokai
Japanese G sound is the hard G as in get, not like in general.
Yokai look like mushroom hallucinations...
It probably was, eat some old rice or some weird water and go wild
I think the scientific term is prodigious... as opposed to masive.
Pokemon is a card game?
Indeed
Yes?

Who’s here because of the St. Jay Garcia Saturn reveal in One Piece? 🙋♂️
honkkkkk mimimimimimi
This is definitely shedding some light on furry culture
I'm sure the video is goodm, but your audio is terrible. Sorry.
Many Yokai are just arts, they are doodle, drawn for artistic sake, nothing more, trying to names them, is pointless.
we don't call him a weeb we call it otaku
Wrong, use Google.
Inject this weeb shit directly into my veins.
Might be bad for your health to inject yourself with strange supernatural spirits.
Someone interested in Japanese culture isn't a weeb, someone who thinks Anime is entirely representative of Japanese culture is a fucking weeb.
I don't want aids
Too much introduction. Come to Subject ASAP. Don't waste my time.
Pronunciation problems: KamEH is a turtle, not a god/supernatural spirit/paper. Kameeh is that, with a very soft eeh at the tend. So, even if turtles are kameee, you called Fuji-san a turtle, not a god. And no kami is a god in the Western abrahamic sense, as all of them can (and are) be vanquished by human heroes, just as in Homer both Aphrodite and Mars are hurt by the uncontrolled fury of Greek heroes. It's just the anti-human stupid Judeo-Christian nonsense that put people at a place where we're nothing before god.
