(I simply draw for fun. so at first I just drew and didn't start from a particular idea. even before that I was going to draw her as a racing girl. haha)
Recently, Tour Box contacted and sent their product to me to have reviews about how this controller could work with my work flow. I just received this editting controller not too long ago

I think those are silhouette sketches? Thus I think it's for values or depth, not quite sure.

how do you know what colour to use and what a particular area or surface would have what colour under different light sources? this is crazy, since it's from imagination and no reference.

This is awesome!!! Let me ask you, why there some paintings that you start from grayscale and others you start by the color itself? I'm a begginer at painting :) I love your work!
It's probably just based on mood lol it's thesame with me, though I usually start artworks with color, I sometimes start in gray scale
I'm also a beginner here, I think grey scale gives quick rough idea of layout of color composition - light to dark as its quick and easy to do them. It similar to how in digital work artist tend to flip their image to see whether its off as it gives fresh perspective similar concept with grey scale + color. You might know if you turn color image to grey scale there would be much difference in composition besides the lack of color + its also goes into positive/ negative fundamental of space/color & so on..I'm currently trying to get comfortable with rendering image with just pencil (greyscale) before I jump to coloring. I'm not really good at explaining things but hope it helped even a little or at lest some direction.

Work is great but how is it speed painting...he took about 12hours to create and take decisions for one concept art?
if he would took 5-6 hours i can consider it as speed panting but more than 6hours cant be speed painting.
