I think it's the elements of the unknown and the spontaneity. You're playing with people you've never, or rarely picked with on songs that you may or may not know, and it just seems to add this synergy and excitement that you don't always get with a group that plays together all the time. You don't know what the guitar player is going to play for his break or how the Mandolin will approach that turnaround...and then when you all hit that band lick together but never practiced, it's like a shockwave that just adds to the vigor of the group... but maybe that's just me 😅
Agreed, you can definitely blame that mostly on the fact that the camera was right over his shoulder. You can hear how he adjusts his volume during others' breaks and tastefully (imho) adds fills in the spaces between vocal phrases. I personally liked it, but that's my subjective take. Since it's a creative art form we're all entitled to our own opinions 😊. Thanks for the comment, Buz.
banjo is a syncopation device, like a metronome.. allows everyone to hear the timing and stay in phrase. A good player, like this one, knows how to allow the softer instruments to demo their own abilities. All Good.!!

Man facts😊
I wish I were there.
Great song by fellow Canadian Gordon Lightfoot.
Banjo needs to stay off of people's toes, especially playing over the vocals. Other than that, nice job.
I believe that’s entirely camera placement, he definitely wasn’t crushing the dynamics in person.
