Really enjoyed watching this. Very impressive to set a big goal and achieve it.
AMAZING story 👏 this is my first time to see your stuff on here. I got the Cracking the Coding Interview book and tried Leet Code but it was all over my head. I used freeCodeCamp after that and finally landed my first tech job recently, in Japan! But I still have the dream of working somewhere like Facebook, even if it's only for a year or two. I got my first tech job at 35 years of age (was a guitar teacher and then English teacher before that). Do you think it's still possilbe for me to even be considered for an interview at one of those companies because of my age? It's gonna take me another year or two before I can get the Cracking and the Leets down. I feel like they will look at my resume and see 38 years old (by the time I'm ready) and just laugh and throw away my resume/delete it.
Hey you have an amazing story! Congrats on your transition to tech. I think age is only a factor if you are close to retirement age. Until then, as long as you can pass the interviews and do the job, no one will care about any of that.
Can you do a video on how you juggled studying while working full time at c1? Like how your schedule was like and what resources you thought was most useful in studying.
I really enjoyed this video but I wonder what did you do for your second time different? When you say you take it seriously this time, what changed?
To start, I had experienced what it was like during the first rounds. It taught me that just barely solving one problem in an interview was not enough. You basically need to solve two med level problems in each coding round and you need to basically get every single one of them right to pass.
I also took behavior and system design a lot more seriously and look up online courses and etc to practice.
Overall, I just decided more time the second time around and knew exactly what I need to study to fill in my gaps to succeed
great video! Are you working on any side projects or will be working on any? I would really like to contribute and collaborate, making it an amazing opportunity for me to learn and work while being around experienced people like yourself!
I've been thinking about making a daily tracker app for specific goals to help me make some 30day challenge videos. I also need to pick up iOS next year so I might do that haha. Not sure if it would be something I'll put up on github or anything though.
Is it really hard to make it in one of these top tech, or generally doable?
I would say its mainly hard because there is a lot of things you need to check off before you can actually pass an interview.
- have enough relevant experience to even be considered for an interview
- grind enough DS / Algorithm to pass coding interviews
- know enough system design
- I would also put knowing how to interview / behavior interview prep as part of this.
Is the tldr; an interview prep book plus neetcode 150 / leetcode top 100 meta problems? 😂
This video is more about my journey. I can do a separate video on a guide to getting into FANG if people are interested.
Love these kinds of videos. They’re reminders that you don’t always hit gold on your first try but if you keep trying, you will hit eventually. Thanks for sharing Johnny!
Thanks for watching. Your comment reminded me of this :) www.kapwing.com/explore/digging-for-diamonds-never-give-up-meme-template
