    Video Summary:
    It's recommended that you watch the first video on oxygen hemoglobin dissociation curve before starting this video. All the basic are covered in that video. In this video we are focusing on the shift in oxygen hemoglobin dissociation curve. This video is in two parts. First I have mentioned how the binding of oxygen with hemoglobin is affected with shift in the curve. Here I have avoided siting any examples. Then in second part, we will see factors that shift the curve. Here we have increased temperature, carbon dioxide, hydrogen ion and 2,3 DPG which shift the curve to left. Shift in curve to right by increased carbon dioxide and hydrogen is also called Bohr's effect. It helps deliver more oxygen to tissues. 2,3 DPG level is increased in hypoxia and it helps in adaptation to it. Carbon monoxide shifts the curve to left. It increases affinity of hemoglobin so much that hemoglobin don't release oxygen at peripheral sites, depriving the tissue of oxygen.

    Very good but the example with CO is not the best choice since CO also shifts the curve down... Better example is Fetal hemoglobin ...

    Sir i have a doubt. You say that carbon monoxide increases affinity for oxygen in haemoglobin. But isnt carbon monoxide itself suppose to attach with haemoglobin( forming carboxyhaemoglobin ) and prevent oxygen combining.

    Do partial pressure of O2 affects the shifting of curve

    • @NonstopNeuron
      @NonstopNeuron  2 роки тому

      the curve is recorded at different pressure of O2 itself. The partial pressure is fundamental factor to produce the curve whether shifted or not. Then we study effect of different factors how they affect O2 saturation at different partial pressures. I hope you are getting it.

    First time I have fully understood this. I guess that’s why they say to read Ganong but in reality med students chose to learn from other books which are less time consuming but skip on the core concept making.
