First, Tom House messed up my shoulder / labrum in the early 90s after I followed his advice as a kid and turned my thumbs down after hand-break to start the pitching motion. Then, 30 years later, I saw this video and did the towel drill with my son, using my right hand as the target. Low and behold, the force of hitting the towel on my hand repeatedly tore the should up AGAIN!! I can't believe this same guy got me twice - 30 years apart!
You must be made outta glass to have not even been able to survive possibly one of the simplest and safest drills from Tom. Hell from the looks of this comment, you’re probably part of the reason behind many “not for consumption” product warnings.
He's actually right, but Tom House has altered this drill slightly since then. The towel drill is now done with the target held right at about shoulder height.
The most important part of your throwing arm is from the fingers to the wrist. The towel drill promotes an accelerated snap. The faster the snap the more rotation of the ball. The faster rotation the more velocity produced👲
Yes I actually have, not sure how that correlates to what we are talking about, sense heaviness in a fastball is caused by downhill plane, amount of backspin, and sink.
There are many, many issues with this drill... Mr. House does know some good bits about pitching, but there are too many negatives with his philosophy. I would rather learn from someone who had a successful career and knows what they're talking about, unlike Mr. House who barely played in the majors
He was the pitching coach for Nolan Ryan during his Texas Rangers career, and according to Ryan, this drill, among others (a lot of drill and workouts), helped him to his longevity. Much of the Ryan´s advises are based on Tom Houses and Gene Coleman regimes.
Billy Bob- He is not saying to do this in lieu of throwing a baseball. He is teaching the mechanics of balance, posture and technique. Once those have been acquired, adding a baseball that weighs 5 oz. should not be an issue. Why do football players work out in just shorts the day before a game or run through ropes? There are no ropes on the field. They are drills to work on other aspects of their job. As to his credentials- he is well renown as a coach and has many followers. Can you name 10 pitching coaches in MLB that had distinquished careers? Maddux and Glavine are playing golf for a living now. And besides, who would listen to a Billy Bob..?
Actually, you want guys who had to maximize every ounce of potential to be successful in their own careers as coaches. Most of the guys in pro sports have things you can't just work to add to your game. You can't teach someone to be 6'5". A guy with a very natural, fluid throwing motion won't be able to teach that motion to anyone else because he does it unconsciously. Besides, he's coached Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and that entire Rangers pitching staff that included Nolan Ryan where several guys pitched into their 40s. If they trust Tom's philosophy *to this day*, I think it's good enough for my 13 year old.
stupid exercise, cuz u destroy the release point and also a proper follow through phase for the pitching mechanics, look at him ,he cant even stand still after the throw motion his whole body move towards the catcher that is not right, cuz u need to learn to stand still

I think you messed up your shoulder. When done properly you should be fine.
😂

Using this drill as a catcher so I learn to keep my front shoulder in and not open up too early.
Old school gold right here

Does the 5 ft also apply to 10yr olds?
Really good drill.
