These were great toys! I had Zintar and thought he was the coolest looking of the 3. To me, it was like having a real little robot. I think the fact that it had real working rubber treads added to it's "realism", along with the gripping claws. But, there was no installing the motor separately in these, from 1968.. They were all ready for playing with right out of their packaging case. Once you get the batteries, that is.
I had all three of these. I broke the tab on the battery compartment of Zerak and had to hold it together with a small rubber band. The "funnel" hand holds the yellow piece, which is a bomb. The right arm has a spring that can be set and then triggered to throw the bomb.
I my experience, most of the Zeroids you see around today have the tabs that hold the two halves together snapped off altogether, or so warn that they don't hold. Such a shame because they're really cool robots otherwise.
That’s a blast from the past. I had all of them, with all the accessories, including a big hamster wheel they’d fit into and drive. My favorite was Zerak. I loved all the detailing in them. I think those odd little half-sphere pieces were missiles that could be fired. I remember that the switch on the bottom could be triggered by some of the accessories.
Wow! This brings back memories! My brother had Zerak and I had Zintar. I remember his sled that he drove around in and Zerak going up the ramp. I have often wished we still had our Zeroids. They were really cool toys back then and still are!
I got Zorbor for Christmas when I was 6. I remember my older brother trying to show me the cart but I thought it looked dumb and wouldn't bother with it. I think I installed batteries in it only once but I played with that little guy for a long time and pieces of him were still around my bedroom by the time I was in high school. There was also another character released in 1970 called the Alien. It was a strange looking thing that you could program by inserting different discs into its back. It would then roll around in a particular pattern and then pop its arms off and turn over.
My favorite robots of them all ! I use to own them as a kid, but had to resort to eBay to get all 3 again, plus the alien version. IDEAL was so awesome and creative to come up with those accessories!! Box doubling as sled, cart. Beautiful robots. I never seen the knock off windups, until you demo'd them just the rubber zeroid of yours. ha, ha.
@@Robothut They were hours of fun when new, had a blast with them shooting those missiles all over the room and picking up paper clips with the magnetic hand.
The small tops are missiles you put in the (funnel) missile launcher hand on right arm. Place right arm with launcher wide part facing up behind head at 90 degrees to body then place missile in launcher. Lift left arm in front of body at 90 degrees and push down on left arm to activate the right to throw missile. May still work, had some sort of spring in it. Look at instructions closely.
My theory about the mouth panel missing on Zerak, is possibly it's so minty is that it was possibly returned by the buyer when new as it wasn't complete, so sat somewhere for many decades. Great video.
I had zarak the blue one , really liked these robots of the zerods .. glad you posted this video now I know the names as I forgot. One of my favorites 😎👍🏻
I remember having the Zobor robot and possibly one of the others when I was three or four. I could not remember the name of the series until searching around the internet images and found the robots I recognized. I also seem to recall having a flying saucer that the robot could drive into via a ramp and then the door to the saucer could be rotated closed. Based upon the compatibility, I almost positive the flying saucer was part of the Zeroid collection and not something I adapted. This was around 1970 so I don't believe it was the re-issue "Star Hawk" that came out later that decade.
I have a Zintar and Zerak... and I also have the Zeroid Alien! It has a sort of programming gear that makes the arms and head pop off with a spring action!
The "tops" you were mentioning @ 11:23 are actually "grenades" that fit nicely in what you describe as a "Funnel", which is actually a launcher. The arm is spring loaded, and the description is there in the instructions you were showing briefly @ 2:44 that shows how you could "cock" the arm to throw and release these projectiles.
I have these wind up versions of the Zeroids. My real Zerak I bought for cheap because his head is broken off. My cousin had a whole collection back when you could pick these up at retail. I was spending all my money on Ding A Lings at the time and didn't have anything left to buy the far more expensive Zeroids. I did buy the Star Hawk and a bunch of the red and blue robots that flew them. They were a line of Star Wars knock offs. The treaded robots from that line shared many design similarities to the Zeroids.
You have a 1968 Zerak in the 1971 box. The 1971 version was a hybrid Zerak top on Zintar legs, as per the illustration on the box. The earlier 1970 Zemo hybrid was a Zintar top on Zobor legs in three colour variations blue, orange or red.
Robothut ,I have the orange wind-up robot. I've heard them called Sidewinders too. I'm surprised you haven't built a lifesize Zeroid. I've seen some on the internet.
Yes a member of the Alphadrome web site has built full size Zeroid robots. here is a link to such build. alphadrome.net/forums/topic/20747-life-sized-zeroid-zintar/?tab=comments#comment-185089
Zerak was intended to break out of his cabinet as in the commercials, (never had that one) should be a place to start him up from inside. The clear bit of the case is usually damaged. I have to add one.
To reduce prices on offerings of zeroid robots , IDEAL toys switched the expensive packaging to cheaper mono-colored print on white or brown cardboard . This was largely due to cost however the prospect of GIVING THE BUYER A FREE VEHICLE essentially ..as well as after buying 1 in the initial packaging over the 1st two years of production then the child could use the sled for multiple zeroid robots ! Also this is why the figures tooling for the date stamps and company info remained 1968 but the boxed variants accompanying instructional paperwork is forward 2-3 years !
Thank you for the upload. These robots were the best toys and memories at ten years old. I had a heck of time finding them online. I researched the motors to finally find the robots. The yellow and black pieces were ray-bombs ? that went inside the funnel to be thrown ?
I remember spending hours pulling the carpet out of the moving motor on the bottom. They look like futuristic Kachinas! Have not remembered these for over 50 years. THANK YOU!
I've been searching for the robots I had as a kid. The main thing I remember is those rectangular removable motors. However, I don't recognize any of these Zeroids. I remember the robots being smaller and skinnier. Was there another line with those motors?
@@Robothut Thanks. I'm probably remembering these robots and mixing them in my mind with some others The year of release fits the age I would have been. Thanks for the great reviews.
I have the gold fancy one (Zobor) still in the box with clear cover. They come with a motor displayed inside the box out of the robot and it’s accessories however I’m afraid to try it because it was never really used I did however purchase brand new tracks and put them on as the originals were dry rotted. Would you recommend that I put any type of oil in the motor and or gears before I try it and if so what kind I appreciate it in advance thanks THOSE TOPS ! They go in the cup and the arms are like ratchets. You pull back the one arm with the cup in with one of those tops in the cup. Then you pull the opposing arm and it shoots the cup forward with the top and throws it forward.

Those little plastic things are the projectiles, put them into the 'cup' armpiece to launch them, did that as a kid in '68.

I was born in 1965 and forgot about them. Then I saw an advertisement fir them in an old comic book and the memories and feelings came flooding back.
Good times.

those are so cool. I had the mid-70s Star Team ones, a red Zeroid, with his UFO ship, a blue one like him, and Zem-21

Love the ORIGINAL ZEM 21 Explorer module spaceship in purple and lime color. This works well with all the zeriods.

Hey bro nice collection💛- I had zerak- I also had the motor I fix torture track and some
Trucks- also had no Atari fix tug boat for bathtub -
Nice video. Zintar was my fave as a child. I believe you have his chest turned backwards in this video. The chest gauges should face forward.
Yes the body lifts off to put in the batteries and it was put on backwards. Only a few caught that. So, I know you had one a child and loved it.
I had Zobor. The coolest thing about him, was that backing him into his case, *turned him off*!
They put a lot of thought and time into designing these bots for sure.
Great zeroid Robots

A drop of light grade oil, like gun oil or even 3in 1 oil on the motor shaft bearings would not hurt. The plastic gears will be find as is.

I think it was zintar that only came with the big ramp the led up to a rocket firing podium.

who had the magnetic hand?
Those "Tops" go into the Cup hand, then you pull the arm back and it will throw the Tops forward win you twist the body.

the part that you dont know where to go . are there one or two per robot?
zeroc it came in a box thats the one I had I just turned 6
