Well I I am on the flip side. I love the story of Jarrett and Lexington. I am loving their bond and learning about the history of racing. I think their story is so interesting. I would like to have the book reflect Theo’s horse painting and then flip flop back and forth with Jarrett and Lexington. I am only at the half way point so maybe my feelings will change. It’s a really good historical fiction. I like Jess and her study of the skeleton but I think the skeleton could just be a part of the author’s afterward and the story again being Jarett and Theo.
Oh wow the layers of this book sound so good! The conversations it's having sound really good too!
Yeah, lots of discussion about the big issues - race and money and collecting the bones of animals. 😁
I have this one pegged as a potential WP book too - and you are the first person I’ve seen review it!! Gold star for Scott 🌟
This sounds like it could be a Gemma book. You know I love a split timeline 😁
Historical Fiction and there's a fair bit of sad too, it's got you written all over it... I was very surprised that nobody had reviewed this one yet, it seems very popular off BookTube, I can only borrow it for 7 days from my library instead of the usual 21.
I’ve read 3 books by Geraldine Brooks-the 2 you mentioned plus March-and enjoyed them all, but I’ve been on the fence about reading Horse. Based on your review, I think I would enjoy it, but I will keep it at a low priority on my TBR because I have more excitement at the thought of reading a whole bunch of other books first.
Yeah, I think it's one of those safe books that will be good, but won't be particularly exceptional.
I really enjoyed reading A Year of Wonder which I read many years ago. I know Eyam which is the setting of that book having lived near there. I was initially not drawn to this book because of the whole horse thing. However, your review is great and really explains there's so much this book. It sounds very different from her other books.
This was my first time reading Geraldine Brooks. So I'm not sure if it's a change up or just what I saw in her book.
I'm very surprised this book hasn't got more attention on BookTube.
Wow thanks for highlighting this book! it sounds really interesting and is now on my tbr. also reminds me of Such A Fun age and Harry Sylv3ster Bird in terms of mixed race couples that explore the nuances of racism and subtle micro aggressions. have you read either of these? Also, recently read Love and Virtue (recommended to me by you and links to this video as an Australian Novelist ) and WOW it was SO GOOD. You were right! Thanks for rec!!
I have read Such A Fun Age, which I quite liked and to be honest is much better at exploring those themes of mixed race couples... But I think that's because it's more focused.
I'm delighted to hear you loved Love and Virtue - when I read a great Aussie book I often feel like the lone voice saying it's good read it, especially when it's a new one.
This book indeed sounds facinating.
If you're willing to make me smarter in regard to Australian racism (if not, no hard feelings), I once heard anyone who is not Australian is keenly disliked. The example that gal gave was her big sister getting beer cans thrown at her while jogging because her American flag tattoo was peeking out of her shorts.
Is that story consistent with current attitudes, or is it reflective of an atypical experience in Australia?
There's a fair element of "shithousery" or I guess hazing, I wouldn't view this as racism, more that we're the drunk arseholes at the party and the American flag tattoo is stimulus... But, I wouldn't expect beer cans to be thrown, more things like "say Aluminium, it's called coriander, how many guns do you own, why is your president a stupid head?" If you're in Australia we're looking for a reaction, just throw back some insults and we'll probably like you for it.
However if you're friends big sister happens to be of Arab decent, there is definately the knowledge of their opinions of booze and the hatred for them from a large minority of our society. Racism definately attached to Asians here, also towards indigenous folks, not many Africans here for me to measure that.
Generally Australians love the Irish, Scots and Canadians, and have no real problem with the US or UK, except we firmly believe everybody in the US is stupid and everybody in the UK does nothing but whing and complain.
That example may have been more a demonstration of Aussies looking at a girl's bottom while jogging than anything to do with being American. Racism, sexism, we've got all the isms here but I would suggest no more than anywhere else (although the Hanson photo represents the more extreme side). Beer cans...it must have been after 10am.
After 10am... or a weekend.
