- The new Lightweight Performance M135i could well be the solution to the controversy surrounding the new BMW 1 Series! The top spec F40 generation 1er has changed from RWD to xDrive AWD with a 4-cylinder engine instead of the previous 6, which certainly arrived to a soft reception, so do the LW modifications restore the former glory? Join me for a test drive to find out!
The Lightweight Performance M135 gives the car a new look with aerodynamic parts including the front lip, spoiler and diffuser that houses a new TuV approved exhaust system. It's running on larger 20" forged wheels while also sitting on a set of 20mm-lowered Eibach springs. Up front is a 2 litre 4-cylinder engine replacing the 6-cylinder unit found in the previous 135i/M135i models that offers 330hp up from the standard 306hp.
After a look around the car and the modifications that have been made by LW, come along for my first drive in the new BMW 1 Series (of all derivatives) and on the perfect roads to the occasion. Surprisingly the change of engine isn't too detrimental for the drive, but of course the AWD setup changes the style significantly but with the LW changes it's good fun. Not flawless by any stretch, but a pocket rocket and very enjoyable drive.

Looks like another european hatchback. americans couldn't even fit in this thing. I am also sure it is really over priced. Germany is a little to proud of their automobiles. Their base models cost more then a home in America. And if you every have to have this thing worked on. You will have to take out a second mortgage just to pay the repair bill. I give it two thumbs down. Good video tho shmee!!!!

Looks way better. But slower. Less engine than focus rs as well. Makes no sense making this now less powerfull.

@@johnny2156 I've had my 123d m-sport for a year now. Power delivery is incredible for a diesel. Must be those twin turbos. Getting it remapped shortly. That should be fun ;)

Its pretty much an A45 AMG that is less powerful (I think), a BMW badge, and most likely less reliable.

@@malikw222 Modern Merc reliability is substantially lesser than BMW. (JD Power, BMW: 122 problems per 100 cars, Audi: 124 per 100, MB: 136 per 100, which ranks them as the worst current reliability among german manufacturers)

Had my 118i M Sport (manual) for a year exactly today. 10k miles as well as a global pandemic. Until you've driven one, you can't say a word against it, it really is quality. Would love that LW version though, shame my bank account couldn't take that responsibility on haha

@@StringerBellz There are a couple after market finishes for the M135 which I think finish the car off that little bit extra, this is one of the nice finishes I've seen. But yeah that one is pretty nice too
Actually this is impossible to drive on normal road with this wheels. Specially if You like to drive fast. You need some tire to drive fast. For example 225/45R18 is faster set up than 225/40R19

@@Arayig1982 Won't fit with the AWD system i grant you but i was kinda hoping for M2 running gear in the Hatch 1 series shell at some point. Guess not...... Bmw look like they want a direct rival for the A45 and Golf.

@@Arayig1982 ??? You have lost me........ They only fitted a four pot to be a direct rival for the A45 and Golf R, if they dropped the M2 RWD running gear into the 1 series shell it would fit fine. Not sure where you are getting FWD from? the Haldex system is the spawn of the devil!! Understeer city!! the new 1 series is a FWD with rear assist (not a proper AWD set up) You may lose 0-60 traction with RWD but you gain handling v's a FWD or Haldex Awd..

beautiful car, but as a new yorker who's bent a rim or lost a tire countless times bc of potholes, those low profile tires make me wince.

Those low profile tires are insane. On anything but perfect road they would beat you up and get easily damaged.

@@marijnmolenaar2848 it's ANY hothatch. They are all the same by now (at least in the 300HP range - above that Audi has their inline 5 still). All the stuff that made the BMW special (RWD and inline6) are gone.
Maybe there will be a M140i with an inline 6 if it fits in the Mini's chassis. Otherwise they won't have anything to compete with the RS3 and A45.
I would rather buy the M2 than this

@Praying Mantis how did you come to that conclusion? Ive owned the old M140i and now the new M135i and point to point the new one is quicker. Sure when you are on a motorway and put your foot down the old one will pull away but thats not rocket science, it has more cylinders and more power. As a package the new one is better in my opinion. M140i fanboys will talk about the rear wheel drive but I can guarantee that if your average M140i owner kicks the back out they will crap themselves. Its too much of a handful so totally get why the new car is what it is.

Honestly, BMW really lost it with this 1 series. The whole look of the original 1 series is gone. Now it looks like a KIA. It's such a shame

BMW should just use the E46 for reference for all their models. Seeing the new 1 series in front of it just show how far they've fallen 😢
From all other sides it's great to me, they needed just a little more aggressive look from the front. They can solve that when they refresh the model.
That is way more unique than the cars they normally make! In my opinion, probably one of the best looking BMWs they normally make. So unique and better!
A similar front end design for the new m3 and m4 would be amazing

I've seen a couple of the new 1 series' so far and i gotta say they are not bad looking cars, and the fwd probably isn't that bad. Still looks like a fun hot hatchback
I always did say I would always buy the one serie over all the other hatches cuz of the inline six but now I would go for the a45 guz it is just much better

I really love the a class and most other BMWs but this just doesn't work for me. The base variant is ok for what it is but this is just trying to hard to be something that it never will be. I don't know how mercedes have done it with the a35 and 45 but they just look right and this certainly doesn't (at least for me)

Why doesn’t the US get any of the cool hot hatches? the Mercedes A45, BMW m135, etc. I know there is less demand, but they are so cool. The only really cool ones we have are the focus RS, civic type r, and gulf R

BMW lost their way several years ago in my opinion, I can't put my finger on it but they're much less desirable than they used to be :(
Isn't this essentially the drivetrain from the X2 M35i or Mini Cooper SUV with the 301 HP engine? When I drove one of these in US, it has lots of torque steer on top of the understeer with stock suspension. Perhaps lightweight has tuned some of this away with the spring package?
This could be a pretty neat little runabout car if not too expensive.

Tim in Germany does the m135 come with I drive 6 and the half digital and half manual display? I believe both are higher spec in the uk.
everyone is stating the obvious which i agree. BUT i cant get over how fat that steering wheel is!! shmee can barely get his hand around it...side note (GMurray hates fat steering wheels to) its really not needed
