Heard so many obviously tourists at the Tinners calling the Village - Zee Nor. Spilt a half pint of the finest cider, laughing at some posh sounding southeasterners saying Zee-Nor all the time.
Another is Lee-lant, or even Lay-Lant - for Lelant
I've heard Snozzle - for St Austell, Snives for St Ives etc. and I'm certain that you don't say "Saint" but "Snt"
    Enjoyed the vid so much.

Launceston is Lanstevan in Cornish and means ‘church of St Stephen’, pretty much exactly like Welsh.

Emmet is a pejorative nickname that some Cornish people use to refer to the non-Cornish. It originally referred to tourists who visit Cornwall but has also been used by native Cornish Folk to refer to "incomers" or residents who have moved to the county but were not born there.
Em Ants are also referred to as "Ants" The Tourists come to Cornwall in droves and act like "Ants" all over the county.

    • @kimberleymitchell1202
      @kimberleymitchell1202 Рік тому

Emmet is not just a nickname though, it's Kernewek (Cornish) for ant. As others have said before me, they're referred to as ants because they invade in large numbers and are a pain to get rid of😂 it doesn't refer to everyone who's not Cornish, just tourists. So you could be local and not be Cornish or an emmet.

Hi! St Austell..is where hundreds of my forefathers came from! Dad, was born in Par, St Austell along with my grandparents who said St Austell is said “St O (as in optical, on ..) stll..St O-stll! Their accents were so deep and strong you would sound like a Londoner! ;) I was born in London, and always say I’m only half an Emmet! 😂😂😂

As an American doing Genealogy, my Wickett, Symons and Marshall lines originated in Cornwall...and emmigrated to Ontario Canada. I now understand how their language got misunderstood by the French Canadians! 🤣 With the gruffness and gravel in the vocals, and some wierd names...🤣

I've always pronounced St. Austell as 'snozzle' and
I'm also a little surprised that you didn't mention Tintagel, but maybe you've never travelled that far North. Commonly pronounced as Tint-a-gel by visitors, but for those willing to be taught how to suck eggs, it should be pronounced Tin-taj-el.

I've only heard Launceston pronouced as Lanson since I moved to east Cornwall. I'd never heard it pronounced that way when I lived in West Cornwall.

I'm from the West Penwith Moors and I've always known it as Lanson - like the excellent champagne.
Though strictly not Cornwall, I shout out loud when I hear the non-existent Scilly Isles.
It's either Scilly, or the Isles of Scilly.

I wish to apologize to the person we may have accidently laughed at some 35 years ago in Cornwall. Being as my ancestors left the Dartmoor area some nearly 400 years ago I have forgotten the mother language. So while visiting Lands End with the ex wife we took a side trip to a place called Sennen Cove. Asking for direction (Something I almost never do) from a woman on the street, she replied in the best Pirate Accent I have ever heard on the Silver Screen. Treasure Island had nothing on this woman's form of speech. I burst into laughter having thought she was putting me on. I heard nothing of the sorts in Penzance where after all Bernard Shaw attributed so much piracy but with highbrow Edwardian diction.

"Budock Water" caught me out. It is pronounced "Bewdock", which is a real shame as "Buttock Water" is funnier.
Older Porthleveners ('lebmers) will pronounce the village name as "Por'lebm", and Helsotners used to pronounce "Porthleven" as "Ole Fishguts".
As a child of a fishing village we used to know the coastal towns by their 2 letter prefix on the fishing boats.
e.g. "Goyn dewn ol PZ are ee ?" - "Ess yo, goyn dewn the barn, coz I erd ill be eavin tonight."
