Russ, thanks for this great interview. As a fellow business owner in the bicycle industry, I have great empathy for Jude and her challenges. She said it well.
Next time I am in Portland know were I am going, may not purchase wheels, build my own, sure to take away something as I did from this video. Jude is a dynamo! Thanks!
I, too, enjoyed this video. I agree, Jude is a good egg here and provides an informative and engaging interview. I most enjoyed her comments as a small business person talking about the challenges of operating a shop. The questions were good .... one of the questions I would have asked, how did she get started, if she'd had previous experience working in a bike shop or retail, and how she grew the business over the eight yrs. Bravo, and thanks!
I love to build wheels. I built the wheels on my road and mountain bike. Wheel building can be therapeutic. This was a great interview. I would love to build wheels for a living. Thanks.
What a fantastic business and entrepreneur in the Portland community! Thoroughly enjoyed this interview. Jude is FASCINATING! And such a great interviewee. (Did have a giggle that 1second after Jude said stabilisation, the camera went wa-wow ;-)
A wonderful interview as always. Wheels have always been the way I choose who works on my bikes .. short of myself. And a great time to be in the wheel building business with the advent of carbon rims, disc brakes and wide cross section multi-purpose tires. A big thumbs up to Jude!
Nice job Russ! Sugar is Jude ... she plays it down, but she and the shop are successful! In addition to building wheels Jude holds classes on the art of wheel building, and there she really demonstrates her mastery of wheel building and clearly enjoys teaching others about the craft. I learned and built a set of wheels during a recent weekend class, one of the best off the bike cycling experiences I've ever had.Besides building a set of wheels, I learned why custom wheels are worth seeking out and paying for ... they are carefully made, will last, and will provide many trouble free miles. Jude and Sugar Wheel Works are an ingredient of the wonderful Portland cycling community.
Great video. Really nice to see some normal people like Jude doing well with her business. Keep up the good work. If I am ever back in Portland on business I will be sure to drop in and take a look. Jeff (Dublin, Ireland)
I loved this interview! I'm lucky my pal here in ATX builds wheels for me, but I would like to go to that shop if ever in PDX(soon, hopefully...). Bikes, coffee, community.
need a shop like that around here. Due to restrictive distribution channels for hoops, decent wheels are impossible to get now unless you're talking full carbon race wheels. Believe it or not, you can't even buy mavic hoops without going out of town. There are machine built wheels with mavics but nobody will hand build one without paying a high premium because they need to go out of their way to get parts.
Finding available people who service and build bicycle wheels is hard to come by. It usually sets you back a week or two as they send them off or put them in que!
All my wheels on all my bikes are hand built. Handbuilds are cheaper in the long run. Thats what I tell my partner when I have to re-rim and re-spoke a wheel. My expensive wheels have Royce Hubs. It didn't look like they where on the board. Is it me or are people excited about the new Mavic open pro?
Liked the video. Liked Jude. Please don't get so aggressive with the editing/truncating of the video. It was really hard to follow the conversation with the sound bites.
I want to start a bike business, but I don’t want to work 80 hours a week for five years. Guess I’ll just make minimum wage in a bike shop my whole life
love the real talk about running a business. thanks
Wonderful! I am going to Portland in the Fall for a conference and am compiling a list of bike-related things to visit. Definitly adding this one!
What an amazing personality, cheers from Amsterdam

WOW!! SOO SOO COOL!!
Excellent interview! It’s very hard to run your own show ! Hours and hours :)
Man, I so want to move to Portland! Being a cyclist in Australia blows.

Wouldn't hesitate to give her some business next time I'm in PDX.
What kind of microphone is that? Thanks! I enjoyed the video.
Autofocus is killing me. Thanks for making a video with great content.
👏👏👏
