Some of the strongest members I've known have returned after their membership has been withdrawn for a time. I think they take it less for granted , and they seem so patient with imperfections of others. Bless you on your journey, your soul is so precious!

It always surprises me that in all the conversations we have about the Stripling Warriors, and how much their moms taught them, where is the acknowledgement and discussion of how much they were prayed for while they were at battle. The righteousness of these mothers doesn't stop when the young men leave for war. It likely ramps up. How much more faith and prayer does it take on the part of a parent for the launching or grown children. I'm confident, as a mother, the magnitude of prayer and ratios of those prayers to faith amplified for those mothers. How much of that is incorporated in how God blessed those young men?

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I love the way the Spirit moves me when i read and listen to this. I loved the story about your daughter and Hagoth. ❤ I also thought it was pretty awesome when you compared the Sons of Helamen to deacons. I know in my ward, that i can picture that easily. Those youmg men are amazing. ❤

I LOVE the stripling warriors. They remind me of the missionaries who go forth to serve... and especially those who go Home to God instead of to their mothers. This is a nearly 4 hour episode... but thank you Jared Halverson for expressing how sacred the call is to serve, to fight the good fight and to return Home with Honor... no matter which "Home" that is!
At the 2:53:40 mark... I am in tears! "If you do not doubt, God will deliver you"
"Mom would say: God delivered your father, just like He'll deliver you. He delivered him from the ONE DEATH that is truly scary... the Spiritual one!! Son, I can't promise that you'll come home to me, but I KNOW you'll come home to God if you believe... If you do not doubt God will deliver you from the ONLY enemy worth fearing... the grave has no victory, the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ, Believe me I rely on that promise every time I think about your father. Of course I would prefer a dual deliverance, but if I only get to pick one, then I pray and I know that God will deliver you in the same way He delivered your father and maybe He'll deliver you in an additional way as well ... I pray for that, I pray for that second deliverance, but I have absolute faith in the first! So go son... and whether you come home to your mother or go home to your father... all will be well! I KNOW IT!
A little background info... our son Connor passed away in 2014 {along with his companion} while serving a mission in Taiwan... I've always acquainted the Stripling Warriors with missionaries and Military personnel... and with broken hearts we were informed of his death... at the same time we were comforted by the knowledge that he was "all the way Home"... he didn't come home to his parents and brothers, but he is SAFE on the other side... thank you for involving us in this snippet of a possible conversation of a boy and his momma!!!

Kept getting Ether 12:27 as I listened: “And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”

Thank you for your work on this - it is my regular addendum to my scripture study each week.
Reading this week (Alma 53) I was struck by the building of the fortifications around the city Bountiful, where he kept the prisoners, and it made me think of this: while I work to build my own fortifications against the powers of the adversary and temptation, I sometimes fall short. Building a 'place' to contain those temptations so that they can become strengths to me (Ether 12:27) might be a way to protect both from outside attack and internal weak points. Also, while engaged in the cause of Christ, it is easier to guard against those temptations.

Bro H, thanks for requesting comments on Alma 53-63. I value your insights, particularly the truth that covenant-keeping for one group of people may legitimately be quite different from covenant-keeping for another group; thanks also for distinguishing that from mere moral relativism. I also appreciate you soliciting comments from your listeners. I have two.
    1. The Role of Addiction in the Covenants of the People of Ammon. My reading leads me to believe that the older men who had covenanted to never again shed human blood had been addicted to murder--serial murder, even societally institutionalized serial murder (see Alma 24:9-13). Given this, a return to shedding human blood would have been like a recovering alcoholic starting to drink again. On the other hand, their sons did not have that addiction and so were in a position (with God's grace) to bear the soul-searing acts of war without their souls being sucked away.
    2. The Age of the Stripling Warriors. As you noted, the Ammonite "sons" of Helaman are described as being very young (Alma 56:46). Your encouragement not to take Frieberg's painting(s) as doctrine is also an important truth. However, I personally would caution against characterizing the stripling warriors as 12 or 13 years old ("deacon aged" as you put it). My reason is not so much in the text as in our current cultural milieu. That is, there are places in today's world where children are radicalized/recruited/drafted/kidnapped to fight as soldiers. I think it would be a terrible sadness to have the Book of Mormon used to justify such child abuse. Therefore, I think it's appropriate to present the stripling warriors as young men (per Alma 53:20), not boys.

Something I noticed is that Moroni tells Ammoron first the spiritual and eternal reasons why his behavior is not okay. It's not about him vs Ammoron. He works his way from spiritual reasoning to temporal reasoning. Whereas, Ammoron works the opposite direction. His language is about temporal force in the physical world, and he talks about his reasoning last, about spirituality last, about God last, and interestingly enough, his own reasoning to the Lamanites is listed very last. Why does he do all the things he does? Well, because he can, I guess. And his emphasis on the temporal and on force reflects that his body and the drive to force others are what drives his actions, which is a sharp contrast to Moroni and how his spirituality leads him to teach, lead, and defend.

Six days a week the devil works,
    Works overtime on Sunday,
And then he’s ready once again
To go to work on Monday.
So if all evil you would shun
    And keep your conscience level,
You must begin at early dawn
And work just like the devil.

You know that doesn't sound nothing like Moroni's language. It sounds more like one of the lamanite leader troublemakers writing that letter by listening to him talk to the other laminates prisoners after the battle. I guess we will never know since we wasn't there.

George Washington start his war life, I believe when he comes to age 25or there about, he lost many at first, they were thinking about replacing him.
But he somehow got things together and start winning the battles.
    Prayers?
One reason I love the picture of him on his knees like Prayers for not just himself but his men and their & families..

I had never considered how difficult it must have been for the ammonites to send their sons in their stead. It seems like sending your children to war would make keeping your covenants harder not easier.

1:08:00 in defense of Captain Moroni. "Neglect" is factually a thing that the city of Zarahemla was guilty of. And Moroni makes very clear that he doesn't understand the why. But he does correctly threaten tegarding a wordt case scenario that was technically occuring, but just not from the source he suspected (and was not sure was the source).
I feel that Moroni's Epistles did nothing wrong because he proved the contraries. But we should not cherry pick his aneger for emulation without his moderation and reason.
First time I've disagreed so strongly with an episode you've done. And I'm not even halfway through.
But i do like that his weakness in feeling anger gives us an out as long as we are self aware and self controlled. With bridled passions.

Around Minute 39:00 - I don't agree with the logic used to counter the issue. Bringing up multiple accounts of the first vision is an indicative of the problem with the first vision in the first place. I would suggest finding better reasoning to account for the fact that multiple first vision narratives were deployed and that the resulting version that we are using in 1838 or 1842 was a fabricated narrative. Had the first vision occurred as mentioned it would have been included with the book of Mormon from the get go, instead we get the Angel Moroni account.

  • @gregbeyer199

I did not appreciate you disparagement of captain Moroni. If Mormon a prophet of God says we should be like him I all ways, that is good enough for me.

Thank you for raising this concern. Captain Moroni is one of my heroes, so it wasn't my intention to disparage, but rather to see how weaknesses can sometimes grow out of our strengths (like Shiblon in Alma 38). But please forgive me if I came off too strong during that portion. I think I did a better job of it in the newer, shorter video covering this section (I'm grateful to continue learning!).

    • @ambersmith4378
      @ambersmith4378 2 місяці тому +2

But all of us are human and aren’t perfect. We are to be like Moroni in all his wonderful ways, keeping in mind that just like us, there are things we can improve or do better as we continue to become perfected in and through Christ. Pointing out his over zealousness in handling things imperfectly doesn’t dismiss the amazing goodness of his that we can emulate and work to follow.

    • @NicolasConnault
      @NicolasConnault 2 місяці тому +4

The only person we should emulate 100% is Jesus Christ. All other role models, however great, have weaknesses that we should not emulate. It doesn't diminish their greatness in any way.
It's absolutely fine to discuss our prophets' shortcomings, particularly in the context of their need for repentance, and their continual progression.
Just last night I was discussing Lehi's likely parenting difficulties, which likely would have explained at least a little bit of Laman and Lemuel's disposition. Same with Jacob and his sons. It's not a coincidence that their most righteous sons were the last to be born. Righteous parents tend to get better parents over time, which gives their younger children a better start in life.
This isn't a denigration of the prophets, it's validating their humanity and helping us to relate to them better
