Thank you so much. Did this today. Cost me $240 probably due to inflation and I went with 5 inch casters and stained/polyed it. I printed your plans for it. Directions were perfect. Again thank you!
Thanks for the video. November 2023 in Vermont: about $110 in wood and screws from Home Depot plus $25 for Harbor Freight casters. Still a great deal for a solid piece.
At about 20 seconds I was loading up the criticism about all your expensive tools. Then you cheeped-out on the saw guide and got back n my good graces. This is one of my favorite bench builds. Seen some guys that build benches that could support their house. I'm not gonna throw a Cat C-15 on my bench. Well done young man! Just crazy how expensive wood is now. Can't build even a cheap 2x4 bench for under $100. I need to go dumpster diving for wood at local construction sites.
Great video. For those asking for a build sheet and materials list. I expanded on Mr. Fix It's reply. (4) 4x4's are cut at 30", (4) 2x4 cut at 24", and (4) 2x4 cut at 69" (6) 2x4's are cut at 21" 8' length in inches 96 10' length in inches 120 12' length in inches 144 Materials list (2) 4x4 8' - Legs (4) 2x4 8' - Sides (2) 2x4 8' - Center supports (1) 4x8 sheet of plywood (Thickness is up to personal preferance and budget) You can get one long side and one short side out of each 2x4 96-69=27. This allows for 3 inches of extra material for squaring up the end and for allowing for the width of the saw kerf. You can get 4 center supports out of each 2x4 You can get 3 legs out of each 4x4 Your bottom shelf will not be flush front to back by the width of the saw kerf from splitting the plywood in half.
Should the 69" pieces be 68"? If you have 2x4 as end caps the (2) 2x4 would add 4" to the 68" piece to give you the 72" for the top. otherwise you'd have 73" and be short on the top.
I just built one using half scrap wood, half newly purchased wood. I also sprung for the good casters. At the end of the project, it cost about $50-$60. I spent a fair amount of time planing the scrap wood and sistering two 2x4's together for two of the legs, since I didn't have enough scrap 4x4. Aside from that, the most time-consuming part was drilling pilot holes, counter-sinking, and driving screws. I'm really happy with the end result! Thank you for the vid!
Great video. I'm working on modified, higher version for my electronics projects. Lumber is much more expensive now but much of this can be done with scrap. The link to the downloadable plans is broken. I think that's what Mr. Norcal was (rudely) complaining about.
I’m a moronic novice and was able to do this with 0 F bombs! Had store precut all but the 4 x 4’s and done in less than 2 hours (no wheels) thank you. Will watch for you when I start next project!
Thank you so much for sharing this video with us. What I loved about it was that you tell us all the measurements for the timber etc., required to build it. There are a lot of good videos out there about building different things, but when we want to make the item for ourselves we don't have any plans or measurements to work from and if you are a learner DIY like myself it becomes all too much to guess these things. I really appreciate the trouble you have gone to, teaching others how to learn for themselves. Thank you once again and please keep sharing your great work with us.
I disassembled a 3'x7' workbench because it was way too large to handle even on wheels & a wench to bring it in. Just began building this table using the materials I already have. This time using 4" wheels. Table is very easy, economical & don't have to worry about using pocket screws. GREAT project.
Found this video in 2019 - I've been looking at building a new workbench and this is easily the best and simplest for a guy like me, who understands basics but is no carpenter. Thank you so much for this!
Thanks for the video!!! Outstanding job!! I made it over the weekend and added a 6” vise on the right end and a 6” bench grinder on the left! I also covered it with a black rubber mat.
Great simple idea.I Made two of these 8 ft long. Very sturdy and the bottom shelf holds a ton of storage(on wheels). One of these is currently holding quite a bit of 8 ft lumber on the bottom shelf for an upcoming project, which the 4x4's hold in place very well. Also mounted a 4 ft. 12 outlet Harbor Freight power strip on each bench on the underside.
awesome video. Built this bench yesterday. I cut out the middle of the worktop and screwed some of the extra plywood to the bottom of the frame 2x4s to make a spot to keep a mitersaw flush with the rest of the table
I've watched over 20 videos on how to build a workshop table, this one is by far the best! Great video editing, clear vocals while giving instructions! Will make sure all my pals see this video! I had a work bench on my list for about a year now and wanted a prebuilt metal table/tool chest, $400 Milwaukee table or a $70 custom built table made with your own blood sweat and tears is well worth any $1,000 table
Yeah I totally agree!! I've watched over 20 vids too and this one is by far the best one. Great audio, great editing, and he was honest about his mistakes! When it comes to building a workbench sometimes simplicity is the best way to go. Who cares if it has fancy mortise and tenon joints or if it has been stained to look pretty. Its supposed to be tough, sturdy and rugged!
This! I watched a bunch of very nice work benches going together in several other videos, but this was what I was looking for. A very simple build that was strong and sturdy yet easy enough to keep the F-bombs down to a minimum. Very nice presentation just tops it off. Well done Sir.
I learned cabinet making and joinery from my grandfather and the very first thing I made was a workbench completely by hand with no power tools at all. And it was made from merchant timber which mean everything had to be planed down square by hand. A custom table would cost a lot more than $1000 that is for sure.
Just finished building this workbench today. Fairly easy build as long as you don't live in high humidity Florida. But I got it done and most likely lost a few pounds as well due to sweating. Only change to construction was adding the 3 cross supports before adding the uprights. Made sure I was square and plumb. Used the exact same casters from Home Depot. The Wife likes it a lot and now I get to build a modified version of this for her craft room, Yeah!
I really needed to make up my mind on what sort of work bench I wanted. I am just a weekend DiY-er and needed to make one so that I could try something more. After 4 days of watching DIY work bench videos, I think I will go with one. Castor wheels had a point for me. I have my workspace INSIDE the house. Yeah, I know its ridiculous. I was intended to for small weekend projects but now has been used for making so many things. With the wheels installed I can move it out in car parking and use that space.(cause I don't own car). Well presented video. I really appreciate it!
Wood prices are way up since 2016. I spent nearly 3x $75 with a 3/4" top and shelf. Summer 2022 Los Angeles area 7 2x4s $44 2 4x4s $28 1 4'x8'x23/32" (~3/4") $75 (I splurged for the thicker top) 4 casters $37 1 box of #8 1-1/4s $13 1 box of #9 2-1/2s $13 16 3/8 x2" lags and washers $9 total $219
thanks for saving me having to do the math lol I figured this thing was waaaaaay over $75 with today's lumber prices. I'm in Detroit btw but I don't think prices are any better. 1/2" sheet of plywood is still $56
I also watched many videos on making a work bench..By far the easiest one to use. Good details and instructions. I spent a few extra bucks and made mine 39 inches wide and 72 long. Appreciate your craftsmanship.
I'm building this one (my first bigger project!) in two weeks time. Or at least, a simplified version of it. Thank you for giving me the courage to attempt this, man.
I just wanted to thank u personally for doing this video because I copied ur plan and built this table. It came out really nice and is super strong for storage when it comes to the lower deck. Thank u so much for ur time and effort. U have made my week. Cheers!!
Love the strength of 4x4 legs instead of 2x4s notched, staggered, and cut various ways. Also added some 3/8" carriage bolts on the corners because I move the table around a lot both inside and outside the house. The little extra money for heavy duty casters is well worth it if you'r going to be moving the bench around a lot. Simple easy, strong, and cheap. Love it!
Thank you! Exactly what I looking for. Watched many videos bus this is very easy for the first timers like me. I was able to complete this project in 2-3 hours.
Simple, inexpensive design. I built it in 4 hours including the trip to the hardware store! The only changes I made were using 3" screws (2.5" seemed a little short to me) and I used MDF for the top, I wanted a smooth, true surface. Thanks!
I made this exact workbench & it has been a major game-changer for me. Thank you for posting such a helpful video. I use my workbench, every single day!
OK, I built my bench last year. I based it off of this plan. I have a small rental house, so there we're plenty of F Bombs. In the end it turned out great. I built in a middle shelf and this gave me a better space to organize my tools. All in all I learned a lot during this build. Thank you.
Every video I've see so far has this concept in mind but then goes on to use prohibitively expensive machines to make a table that supposed to be "budget friendly". Even the saw you used to cut the legs isn't necessarily needed. Thanks for the video!
There's a certain beauty in simplicity. And this work bench is very simple to build, yet is plenty strong for most applications. BTW...testing the completed bench for strength the way you did is fine, unless you live on a hill like I do. Then it doesn't end so well. Thanks for the great video.
I dig your style. I really like how you speak clearly when explaining things. I also like that you show how to.do things for those of us who are renters and do not have the stationary saw tools.
This is an awesome video for people who have acquired tools over the years but never took the time to give them a space. Or people who live in apts/condos...thanks so much for sharing!
I just found out I want into woodworking and this workbench you just built will be my first workbench. I dont have any power tool besides a drill/driver and a three different handsaws, levels and clamps.
I think this is the one I’m going to try making. I’m a beginner wood worker. Just need to make it a bit smaller for my needs maybe 52-54 inches in length
I did this yesterday. Your plans are easy and precise. I already had the plywood and the 4 x 4‘s. It turned out great. However I did use pressure-treated 2 x 4‘s and pressure-treated 4 x 4‘s.I want to put a coat of paint on it therefore I will have to let the would dry out.
good video. I might even recommend to people doing this project to consider an inch of overhang on the top-sheet of plywood to allow for easy clamping surface (if you don't have a lot of long clamps). Would be important to note that if you wanted to do this the frame of the table should be reduced a couple inches, otherwise one sheet of plywood won't cut it.
The only power tool I own is a screw driver. Luckily my local hardware store cut the wood to size and now I have an awesome work bench! Wheels included! Thanks Mr Fix It!!
Just got the wood delivered yesterday. I had timber merchant pre cut it to size for me,(I don't own a mitre saw yet and I'm recovering from an operation) . Really simple assembly ideas no fancy joining or glueing 3x2s . Can't wait to start assembly today Thanks for the video
I did it here a quick hack. Have the store do the cuts on 4x4’s to size, and plywood long cut helps getting ply fix into truck or suv. Also with 4x4 cut don’t need crop saw at home.
I started with this plan, and then modified it slightly to include a section in the top that was removable to allow me to set my miter saw in. The surface was set to be level with the rest of the table so that I could use the width of the bench as infeed/outfeed tables. Then I made up a mount for my little tablesaw to attach to the end of the bench so I could use it for outfeed on that as well. I've got limited space and being able to make it modular has been a huge help!
Hey there, I'd like to do something similar. Would you mind adding some photos or more detail on how you built it? I'm just a novice 55 yr old chick building her first bench for her small "in the works "shop.
@@angiel466 so easiest explanation without trying to figure out how to upload plans: On the front side of the bench, add a second 2x4 under the one that supports the top. On that top run, form in a section that is the width of your saw and deep enough so the table surface can extend your infeed/outfeed. I took the 2x4 that I used to frame up the opening and ripped 1/2" off one side so that I could use 1/2" plywood to create a base on the inset piece. I mounted by saw to a base board and leveled it up so that the table surface was even with the saw feed tables. To finish it off, I made a rough inset that fit the size of the saw opening that I could put down when I wasn't using the saw and still have a full table surface.
Just made one today. ty for The video.. I had an idea how to do it but you already had all the measurements which made it nice. I build mine a little different . I added 1 more support for the top and bottom and i didn't install the casters. I also moved the bottom shelf up a foot. if i do add casters later on, ill put the ones on the side which lifts the bench off the floor to move it then lowers back down. Thanks again for the great video....
One mod you need to think about when building a bench like this is a folding extension along the long side or one at each end. It will more than double your working area and is great if you work with large panels.
Just finished building this and I love it!! Super easy instructions, the plans from the website are so handy, and best of all it's a high-return 1-day project. Had to leave my first ever (and probably last) youtube comment to say thanks.
This was the workbench I chose and I love it. Very similar to other videos but yours uses 4x4's for the legs, which I wanted in order to support the attachment of a small bench vise. I'd like to add a couple drawers just under the top, so that'll be next.
Great bench, a PRACTICAL, CHEAP BENCH. So many of the videos showing us how to build a bench are actually videos on how to build A WORK OF ART. They are just RIDICULOUS, they are so beautiful I would not dare to put a bowl of flowers one LET ALONE HAMER AND DRILL ON THEM.
Great video. I built this workbench last weekend. It's a good design, easy to build, and is rock solid. Many of the "budget" workbenches shown on YT use single 2x4's for the legs, but the 4x4's make this one very rigid, important since it sits on casters. Rolls easily in and out of the garage, just what I needed. Thanks!
I’m haven’t read all 500+ comments, but just wanted to say, even if you forgot to put in the cross braces in before you flipped it you could flip it over again and then put in the second set of cross braces in. The top becomes the bottom or vice versa since they are identical. Makes no difference which end the casters go on, the opposite becomes the top.
Great video! I followed your plans but I used 3/4 MDF. I had my local Lowes cut it in half long ways. Made it easier for me. Only issue I had was that I followed the plans and bought 1 1/4" screws for the tops but I didn't account for the thicker wood. It grabs but barely. Maybe in the future I'll replace the screws for longer ones.
Best workbench Vid i've seen. Simple, low cost, no frills. Doesn't need a bunch of tools that a home DIYer won't actually have..... That'll do me nicely :)
Great design, I modified it and made 2, both 4 foot long benches so I can join and split them, so I can have a 4' x 4' workspace or 8' foot long workbench.
Great idea! Might have to do that myself. And by doubling up materials and cutting all of it at one time, I suppose you get two work benches for much less than twice the time of making two individually.
I'm planning to make a bench, and find useful information in lots of videos. I'm taking "start making the bench upside down on a flat surface", from yours. Very good advice, but I wouldn't have thought to do it that way.
I have to stop and say thanks, you table is super practical to make, I am learning how to make it don't take me wrong, you make it look so easy. I like that it was done quick.
I just built two and they came out great. Since this video was produced, the price of material (here in L.A.) has skyrocketed. Locally sourced material cost me $190/bench.
Just built my work bench using your awsome plans..loved it. Works great! Been using the bench everyday for working on small automotive and weekend diy projects. Thanks!!
Can't wait to get back stateside. Just got the materials for this build and spent 4 times as much in Italy. 8' 2x4 at Lowes for $3-4, the equivalent here was about $17. Insane.
I just built one that looks very similar to this. Although mine is more elaborate with a big front vise using 3/4" plywood for the top. I also used canter lever wheels that you can raise or lower.
Well done ! I like the fact that you showed the finished product at thE BEGINNING ! Just makes sence knowing what your going for at the start. Nice video.
Right on Mr Fixit ...thanks for your easy to follow directions, just finished mine, same as yours except no wheels ....thank you very much ....2 thumbs up
I have looked and looked for a nice simple build like yours. It will be one of my First projects. One guy on YT had the nerve to call his table build simple with dovetails, lap joints, & doweled connections! Ohhh Brother, lol. Thanks for your actual simple design for us beginners.
I have a solid oak door that I wanted to use for a top. Would this bench build be strong enough to support that? As many others stated, after cruising hours of DIY bench videos, I finally found your that doesn't require fancy joints and $$$ planers well above my skill set and budget.
I made mine the same way except mine is the full 8'x30". The top has a lip all the way around for clamping. Works like a charm. I know your video is like a year old but I just saw it lol.
This is the best workbench video. Period. I have built one of this for my garage couple of years ago, and I am building one more today for my basement. Thank you!!
I like this video a lot. I'm building my first workbench and this is the tutorial I was looking for. From one "idiot" to another, good job. Seriously, this is the right level for a beginner, & I like that there was a mistake and the comment which indicated humility. I'll subscribe.
Could you use a blockboard for the top and the bottom bench? Blockboard is more sturdy and can take more hammering and pounding than plywood. Plus you can drill holes on it to fix stoppers and install a bench vise.
At last, after surfing forever, your plans are exactly what I've been looking for. Had to downsize for retirement, lost most of my table tools but kept enough for a project like this. Problem is, not your fault, inflation is a killer for DIY in 2023 and I live in lumber country.. I'll just have to budget my beer money and " belly" up to the project I have plenty of both , beer budget and belly. :-)
I watched a few videos on making simple work benches. I liked all of them but yours was the only that got me to click subscribe. That was an excellent video. Thanks for keeping it timely, informative, and entertaining!
great video I made one very similar to this but for the top I bought a What I am guessing was a solid fire door at habitat restore and made the worktable to the door demensions
Thank you for this clear and concise video. I was gonna spend the money to buy a bench but after watching this I will try and make my own. The way the video was put together gives me some confidence to try. Thank you again!
funny to see how i came up with a design very similar to this using osb, 4x4s and 2x4s and casters but I did not include a bottom shelf and made the legs and casters removable for added stability. and added outlets and a undermount light.
I built this along with my son using your guidance. This was our fist project of this kind and we had a special time making it. Thank you Aaron.
Still a great deal for a solid piece.
unfortunately the price came to about $660 because i didn't own any power tools (those things ain't cheap). ended up going with a husky.
At about 20 seconds I was loading up the criticism about all your expensive tools. Then you cheeped-out on the saw guide and got back n my good graces. This is one of my favorite bench builds. I'd like to build this exact bench possibly upping the top to 5/8"...
Great video.
For those asking for a build sheet and materials list. I expanded on Mr. Fix It's reply.
(4) 4x4's are cut at 30", (4) 2x4 cut at 24", and (4) 2x4 cut at 69"
(6) 2x4's are cut at 21"
8' length in inches 96
10' length in inches 120
12' length in inches 144
Materials list
(2) 4x4 8' - Legs
(4) 2x4 8' - Sides
(2) 2x4 8' - Center supports
(1) 4x8 sheet of plywood (Thickness is up to personal preferance and budget)
You can get one long side and one short side out of each 2x4
96-69=27. This allows for 3 inches of extra material for squaring
up the end and for allowing for the width of the saw kerf.
You can get 4 center supports out of each 2x4
You can get 3 legs out of each 4x4
Your bottom shelf will not be flush front to back by the width of the saw kerf
from splitting the plywood in half.
Thank you very much for taking the time to make this list. Saved me time, very much appreciated!
you dont really need the 4x4 right? can you sub with just 2x4?
Should the 69" pieces be 68"? If you have 2x4 as end caps the (2) 2x4 would add 4" to the 68" piece to give you the 72" for the top. otherwise you'd have 73" and be short on the top.
So I just learned a 2x4 isn't realy 2" by 4".... Now I know.
Thanks so much for doing this. Greatly appreciated

And you added a diagram of the dimensions. That really helped.
Thank You

Finally a freaking tutorial that beginners can do. Thanks!
This is a simple and great project. Heavy duty and mobile. I made it yesterday. Thanks for this post.
Love the strength of 4x4 legs instead of 2x4s notched, staggered, and cut various ways. Also added some 3/8" carriage bolts on the corners because I move the table around a lot both inside and outside the house.

that drill bit which created the extra depth at the top for the screw was awesome

I watched a lot of videos on how to build a workbench but this is the one I actually built. Great video and info. Thank you so much.
OK, I built my bench last year. I based it off of this plan. I have a small rental house, so there we're plenty of F Bombs. In the end it turned out great. I built in a middle shelf and this gave me a better space to organize my tools. All in all I learned a lot during this build. Thank you.
Perfect size in my opinion for my particular use. Built two like this already.
Every video I've see so far has this concept in mind but then goes on to use prohibitively expensive machines to make a table that supposed to be "budget friendly". Even the saw you used to cut the legs isn't necessarily needed. Thanks for the video!
You could hand saw everything for sub-$10. RIP arms.
Am going to build one next week. Will be using 4x4 for legs and 2x6 for frame supports.
Guys I am new to woodworking business and thanks to *TopFineWoodworking. Com* that helps to learn more then 16000 woodworking Projects and plans
This table is very simple and very strong. You explained everything very well and quick.Thank you for sharing.
Built this today! It came out great I made the bench out to be 38in height , I'm 6'1. I used some torx screws by the way.
Just built this and it turned out great thank you for the plans!
Just got the wood delivered yesterday. I had timber merchant pre cut it to size for me,(I don't own a mitre saw yet and I'm recovering from an operation) .
Really simple assembly ideas no fancy joining or glueing 3x2s .
Can't wait to start assembly today
Thanks for the video
This is the information I need for my boys and I to build our first work bench!
I watched this video some time ago and I am now planning on building it. I love how simple it is. Some bench builds are so complicated.
I did it here a quick hack. Have the store do the cuts on 4x4’s to size, and plywood long cut helps getting ply fix into truck or suv. Also with 4x4 cut don’t need crop saw at home.
pretty easy build I decided to trim the top wirh some extra 1x4 's I had laying around looks decent
Awesome! Congrats on the build and thanks for the comment! Hope the bench works out for you. Great idea with the side casters!
Starting mine today
Awesome! And I love when humor is thrown in. Thank you.
I am not in this profession, but i am learning by seeing your videos. Thanks
Best workbench Vid i've seen. Simple, low cost, no frills. Doesn't need a bunch of tools that a home DIYer won't actually have..... That'll do me nicely :)
Perfect. I was searching for the old Sears plan I made 30 years ago...pretty darn close, thanks!
Very good advice, but I wouldn't have thought to do it that way.
great bench! I didn't add casters so I set the bottom shelf up about 5 inches
I have to stop and say thanks, you table is super practical to make, I am learning how to make it don't take me wrong, you make it look so easy. I like that it was done quick.
Thanks for the support!
I just built two and they came out great. Since this video was produced, the price of material (here in L.A.) has skyrocketed. Locally sourced material
cost me $190/bench.
Just built my work bench using your awsome plans..loved it. Works great! Been using the bench everyday for working on small automotive and weekend diy projects. Thanks!!
Glad to hear it! Thanks
You made something simple look so good. very instructional and entertaining.
I made this 36x96. Just had to add a couple more center supports. Will also be adding a OSB sacrificial top.
You earned this sub, I have been trying to find a diy work bench that works for my space, is portable, and cheap. I am making two of these, thanks.
Can't wait to get back stateside. Just got the materials for this build and spent 4 times as much in Italy. 8' 2x4 at Lowes for $3-4, the equivalent here was about $17. Insane.
I am looking forward to starting this tomorrow. Thank you. Well done.
Nice video.
Right on Mr Fixit ...thanks for your easy to follow directions, just finished mine, same as yours except no wheels ....thank you very much ....2 thumbs up
Great video! Only thing I wish was I wish you had exactly said what materials you needed instead of saying and “some 2x4s”
I have looked and looked for a nice simple build like yours. It will be one of my First projects. One guy on YT had the nerve to call his table build simple with dovetails, lap joints, & doweled connections! Ohhh Brother, lol. Thanks for your actual simple design for us beginners.
Great plan … Adding the shelves soon!
simple, easy, cheap and DIY. That's what people wanna see. Good job man!
Thank you!!
Thank you thank you thank you. This workbench is everything I could ever need. Great job.
Good quick idea. New to wood working. I learned something!
Excellent video! Simple and Cheap. Great DIY. Thank you very much!
Just to the project to get this hobby started right.
Now this my kind of table. Simple, Moble and Strong. Thank you!!
Thank you for this clear and concise video. I was gonna spend the money to buy a bench but after watching this I will try and make my own. The way the video was put together gives me some confidence to try. Thank you again!
Just finished mine yesterday. It came out great. Thank you!
Thank you ! Just what I was looking for , reminds me of my dads workbench he made when I was young
funny to see how i came up with a design very similar to this using osb, 4x4s and 2x4s and casters but I did not include a bottom shelf and made the legs and casters removable for added stability. and added outlets and a undermount light.
Thanks for such a great video. Many of the videos out there are so involved I have no idea who is making such elaborate work benches. Again thanks
There's levels to this. This is at my level. Maybe. Awesome vid.
