It’s a climbers Aguirre Wrath of God… Dons beer belly is awesome, he was an incredibly strong climber. It’s hard to imagine many of today’s quickdraw gymnasts enduring the approach to climb this.
True hard men of the mountains. Doing it for the enjoyment, not the accolades.4 friends enjoying each other's company. I used to have friends like that. Only 2 of us left out of the 4 now (my 4 I mean, but it applies to this 4 as well... Joe and Hamish are still going strong).
I've watched this fine video numerous times. Each time I've been enthralled. These climbing/adventures epitomised what adventure is all about. May they all RIP
Three pivotal pioneers who's foundations forged and advanced British technical climbing. Brave adventurous men of unyielding tenacity in spirit - purpose and quest ! RIP Joe 🙏
Still have my red Joe Brown helmet and 2 orange and white Don Whillans harnesses, good as the day they were made, no sewn loops back then for gear, just cord linking chrome D-rings.
I didn't know this film existed. I read 'Feeding The Rat' back in the early 90s and again, recently. I always wondered what Mo Anthoine looked and sounded like. He is one of the 'unsung heroes' of British mountaineering. I used to own one of his and Joe's Snowdon Moulding helmets. One good aspect of this modern world is that I can look up any fact and obtain any film. This expedition doesn't look very enjoyable! Rain and spiders versus ice and snow. Hmmm.😀
Read Hamish's book about the climb, most of it factual, dry as dust, understated, then peppered with his explosively funny dry humour - I'm laughing remembering it - e.g. just as they finally got over the prow, he admits " The old brown eye was winking". Hard as nails.
Talk about a beyond challenging access route to base camp on Mount Roraima, especially back in 1974. Well done, all involved. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Roraima
Neil McCallum is a brilliant laconic narrator. Think im right in saying he was a canadian actor/director who did some of the voices for Thunderbirds and Capai Scarlett. Also Im sure I rea he dided jus a couple of years after making this
49:20 Actor Neil McCallum, the narrator, sounded more canadian here than he does in his acting roles. Surprised to discover he died not long afterwards in 1976, aged 46.
Astonishing! I have just come back from an expedition following exactly the same route, literally 2 weeks ago. If only I knew this video was on YT...been looking for that footage for years! Any chance to find a DVD copy?
I wish to god i had seen this soooo mnay odd years ago.All i have missed out on.But i will to Scotland.I want to walk in the footpaths. And to Snowdownia and to the Eigar just to start...
Omfg I was tired and was thinking in METERS not feet and when they said 6,000 I thought what TF…..that’s only 2,000 less then Everest….they don’t need oxygen?! 😂🤣🤡 DUH me!
Joe and Don old school climbers booth was well established then and my heroes in the 60s m et them both great lads R.I.P

Yeah, like the acid tripping, drunk, jeans wearing early El Capitan climbers.
I could Imagine Don in Aguirre in the opening scenes traversing the Andes mountain passes…with a Embassy number 1 between his lips.
Don Whillans,Hamish MacInnes, Joe Brown, Mo, Antoine - legends not many youngsters today ever heard of, sadly. Great video - thank you.

RIP Joe Brown, a legend of British climbing.

Wow , those lads are the real deal, tough ,full of humour and smoking like chimneys, LOL.
Hard men real ones, you won't see this again it is the old way......
Fantastic documentary
Only in the 70’s do you find these type of extreme sport athletes who are also smokers, lol
Phenomenal video, thank you!

A bunch of chain smokers go on a rain forest expedition looking for diamonds on a spiders and crawlies covered wet rock...
Yea the last real climbers…..kinda missed that one

And Mo Antoine:)
I heard a reference to Adrian making a brew, which I presume was Mo's brother?

I just found out Doug Scott has passed.I wanted so much to go to a seminar and bloody hell.Im so depressed today.
@@krisdan76 Doug Scott and Hamish MacInnes (featured in this film) sadly died within a month of each other, near the close of 2020.
Huh? This isn’t Scotland! 😂🙄
Why didn’t they go In September, not in the rainy season!! 😂🤣
And then they had to walk back to the boats and then days in the boats.
Why in blazes is that man barefoot??!
No one told these guys about helicopters?
You could say the same about the train up Snowdon?
Id love to recreate this climb…anyone?
Why was he touching that nasty tree??! 😂🤣
Omfg I was tired and was thinking in METERS not feet and when they said 6,000 I thought what TF…..that’s only 2,000 less then Everest….they don’t need oxygen?! 😂🤣🤡 DUH me!
They couldn’t dry their socks and clothes with a fire??! 😂🤣
Why didn’t they go by helicopter?! 😂🤣
I’m not sure what Don Whillans thought about it all. He looked a bit out of place and a bit out of sorts.
Hahaha he always seemed that way wherever he was. He never seemed much interested in anything but the climbing and it's challenges.
Why would you go to a rainy, messy, insects, snakes, mosquitoes, ect. stifling hot, country??! They couldn’t find anywhere else to go??! 😂🤣
Then, it was Mortal Kombat, now its.................
Really don't need that TV commentator
i dont find him too annoying but he really did wanna be the star of the show didnt he
Hes brilliant, its what makes the doc rise above others of its kind
