I am from Nicaragua and for some reason seeing Nicaragua represented by a shark made sense to me.
One of the only freshwater shark species, makes it a very unique creature to your country, it pretty cool.

As a panamanian it is pretty accurate how the USA-Panama relations were presented. Although in recent times, many more panamanian workers and engineers were present for the daily operations and the expansion of the canal locks. The canal isn't just an american waterway, it's for all countries in the world

Hi hoser, a random nicaraguan guy, i just came here to explain that the idea of a canal here is now twice as impossible, since the canal would go on thru lake Nicaragua, something that could actually screw the whole Rio San Juan Mini basin, and thus some species, but one of the reasons of why the canal is so hated here is because that would imply moving anyone and their properties that are on the projected path, in certain way, the canal was also one of the factors that would lead to the Political Crisis from 2018-Present, other factors, include that the project was proposed by the central government without asking to the provinces, especially the autonomous ones, so, a canal now is basically impossible, not only due to the economical crisis, the lack of funding, but also to how controversial the idea is.

10:10 Hey @hoser I think you are mistaken here, more than 500 million tons of freight move on the Mississippi every year, much more than through Canada. The reason there are few ships show is because this is almost all done on barges driven by tug boats, which are not ships. This is also even cheaper than using foreign ships.
Turn on the tugboat filter for AIS (blue boats). You'll see the Mississippi is an extremely productive waterway with hundreds of barge trains all the way up to Minneapolis and into the Great Lakes.
As an Egyptian i must say, the evergreen 'crises' surely made the world realize how important the suez canal is and we will improve it further in the future.
Now hoser has to make a video about 7 stories about ancient and modern overland routes to make up for the navigable shenanigans, from the Cascades to the Himalayas!

As a Baton Rouge resident, I’ve heard talks of a new bridge my whole life and many have talked about it decades before my birth. Louisiana doesn’t have the money to fix that bridge and if it did the local government is so financially illiterate they‘d never get it done.

You should make a video on the Nicaraguan canal and William walker. The guy invaded the country and took it over and then back stabbed Vanderbilt for access to the steamship routes. It’s crazy story
To briefly summarize for those curious: US child-prodigy-turned-mercenary starts out by invading Baja California to relegalize slavery and ends up becoming the dictator of Nicaragua, relegalizes slavery (again), pisses off Vanderbilt, then gets in one of the biggest wars of 1800s Central America, "accidentally" killing like 10% of the Costa-Rican population via germ-warfare in the process. h0ser you should talk about the old river control structure on the Mississippi River. Without it the Mississippi would change course and send 70% of its water to the Atchafalaya and cut off navigation routes to the gulf for quite a while

I have no idea what definition of navigable peter zeihan uses for rivers. It depends on what draft you set as the bottom limit. The fairest way to compare it, would be either total tonnage of goods, or total value of goods moved in the river system in a given year. I'd love to see a comparison of the us/canada one VS the chinese one VS the european one.
He uses at least 9 feet of draft at least 9 months of the year. It's in his first book.

You have to dig into the figures yourself, since different countries use whatever definition of navigable waterway they want. Zeihan's is at least 9 feet of draft at least 9 months of the year.

I don’t wanna be that guy but just FYI at 14:42 the picture used is actually depicting a meteorological event known as Yellow dust in which sand from the deserts in Central Asia are carried eastward towards China, Japan and Korea, you can tell by the yellow tint in the picture. this phenomenon happens year round but is especially bad in spring. It is true that China has a ton of pollution and air quality problems but using a picture of a sandstorm to represent their air pollution is misleading and quite disrespectful

So for Peter Zeihan saying that it is more than the entire world combined, he is partially correct. If you take the whole gulf and east coasts barrier islands, you get an almost interesting passageway along the coast.
The Northwest passage was/is so dangerous that the first ship that made it did so with the entire crew frozen to death, or at least that's the legend of the Octavius.
