One of us, one of us, one of us. I love mine too. Just wish i had a 231 instead of 192. Just for the 10k rpm (Reality is i don't need it but for shits and giggles). Outside of that, I'm blessed with owning my dream car.
Best advice i have been told over the years being in RX7s. Keep it simple silly. Keep the build oem+. Best days of owning a RX7 are the days driving it and admiring what you have built.
Character > specs is the single biggest takeaway for the motorcycle world especially. Forget HP numbers and test ride everything you can. When one makes you smile and one makes you bored that’ll tell you more than a spreadsheet :)
All great advice! The joy ride for friends and family thing is right on the money. Not only are you likely to break your car trying to impress someone, you're putting your passengers life in danger. I've seen it happen and the guilt can stick with you for life.
This is the first video of yours that I have seen and I have to say that you are now one of my favorite automotive creators. As an early twenties guy who wants to become an enthusiast, this video was extremely helpful. Hope you have a nice day!
Agreed on all points. Last time I took someone out on a joy ride (it was on a road course), I spun out on the very first corner. Luckily, I didn't quite make it to the tire wall.
Watching the video and hearing the advice you gave almost felt like a recap of all the lessons i went through being a car enthusiasts at a young age. I'm in my late twenties now, and all of the advice in this video is very true. I am also a Toyota/Lexus enthusiasts, but I have grown to appreciate other brands after experiencing their vehicles and it made me want to try out different vehicles. The idea of "character is more important than stats" is such an underrated thing nowadays in the car community.
Huge tip here. Don’t get enamored by low production numbers if you plan on driving your car. You won’t find cheap and available parts for it. Mechanics either won’t know how to work on it or will charge you an extreme premium. I had a BMW Z4M in Seattle. Got rear ended. Car was in the shop for 3.5 months waiting for parts from Germany. Missed the entire convertible season.
Dude I’ve been at work for 5 hours and watching your videos for the last 3 of those hours. I love learning from such a down to earth guy. I just recently switched from a car that was mainly for getting from point A to point B and got a 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-road and am in love. I don’t even have the permanent license plate and already put at least 24 hours of work on it with various mods for user experience. I’ll have to save for rims, tires, etc etc. I figured I could do the exterior stuff that other people see or do the upgrades that are for me and my experience. I’m so happy I made the right decision. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Reach out to the owners club BEFORE you buy the car. They have great advice! Also find an Indy repairer before you buy - one of the main insights you're looking for from the club. Let the indy inspect the car before you buy. Tell them you’ll be bringing it back for all the work if you buy. See if they’re trustworthy. Build a relationship.
Also, one tip if you don’t have a climate controlled garage, or park your cars outside is DAMP-RID. I get the ones in a bucket and the ones that hang, they help keep the moisture down and keep away the musty smell/mold etc…worth the $10-$15 per car.
Character over stats perfectly describes the Miata in my profile picture. Stock power with mainly suspension, brakes, and tires. It’s so much fun, it just FEELS so good, and it talks back to me as we drive down the road. I wouldn’t swap it for the fastest LS, 2J, B58, 5.0 powered anything. The emotional connection I have with this car is incredible. I encourage anyone to find that for themselves whether it’s a Pontiac Aztek or something like your MR2.
Great video!! I’ve got a 2018 4runner. My “overlanding” rig. KMs are signs that Im having fun. More miles = more adventures. I hope to just keep ‘em coming
My WRX still understeers with an aggressive alignment = character. It means to make it dance, I have to turn in early, chop off the gas and wait for it to rotate, play with the weight transfer. I've stiffened the absolute nuts out of it (24mm rear sway bar) and boy. It has character. It rumbles, it rattles, it doesn't have much in the way of creature comforts...and it's a wagon. So I take it to Home Depot and load it up with stuff. I wholeheartedly agree!!
I drive an old VW Passat 1.9 TDI from 2000. Bought it off of my dad, it was our family car for a long time. 300k miles on it. I'd love something sportier or quicker. But in regards to the character thing: The car has good torque, is very analog (no electronic fancy bs inside), is fun to drive, has good fuel economy, plenty of space inside and visibility is great. Hell I can load up all my musical gear inside and drive to a gig and still fit 3 other people inside. She's an old lady, but I have rarely felt as good in any other new car I've tried. 🤷🏻♂️
The one dude complaining about how you said Celica is funny! Clearly he's never heard of linguistics! Also happy to see someone else with a bunch of Toyotas,! I got a Zzt231 Celica, Zzw30 MR2, XA10 Rav4, and recently bought and fixed up a XV30 Camry that is loaded! I like your set up!
Not sure how or why this popped up on my suggestion page, but glad it did. I couldn't agree more with all of your advice! I've been into building and modifying cars for 30 years and I would say the best advice is you should be doing this for your own enjoyment and don't spend a second of effort trying to impress other people, they will always let you down.
When modifying your car, less is more. Need more power? Why build a fully built motor when you could swap in a factory motor that has what you need at oe spec. Painting your car? Why do a custom one off color when there’s 10,000 great colors with a paint code.
#16 deserves to be higher on the list. Seems like everybody wants to make it into the official Instagram reel by revving and backfiring and doing burnouts. Just don't, guys. Please. #26 is great too. I went on a canyon cruise and at one of our stops a couple tough looking bikers came over to our group. They needed to fix something that came loose on one of their bikes, and I had my toolbox in the trunk so I let them have their pick of what they needed. Felt like a superhero that day and they were super appreciative when they returned the tools. At cars & coffee meets, it's great asking owners about their cars. The way their faces light up when talking about their passion is a 10/10 experience.
Congrats on Turning 39 and thank you for spitting some wisdom for us. Been following you for such a long time and its crazy how fast time flies by. A lot of what you said should come off as common sense but in the world we live in today maybe its not common anymore sadly. So much can be said about these simple things and view points in life and yet people will still argue about it. Biggest take away - Be a leveled headed but prepared individual. Life is all about how we deal with the situations we are delt with. Our attitude and actions towards them dictate our lives daily. Be vigilante, Be humble above all else be a human.
Great video, great advice! Especially about brand loyalty. I grew up die hard GM, Chevy mostly and til I was in my early 20's, you'd not have convinced me to drive a Ford or Dodge let alone anything japanese. Then in 2005, I bought my first Tacoma and realized how wrong I had been. Granted, now I only drive Toyotas and Hondas. There's other brand vehicles I'd like to own at some point, But the ones I have currently, fit my needs and bring me enjoyment. I enjoy your channel and you have nice vehicles and it's great to see you enjoy working on them and modding them.
Thanks, I have a Golf 1.5 2019 Tsi 150 hp stage 1 now 180hk with coilovers and aftermarket exhaust. I absolute love my car but people make fun of me for modifying it… i just don’t care about stats that much…
Great video, enjoyed it! The being open minded part is interesting to me. I've always heard and read that Toyota makes nothing but boring, bland cars, with the exception of their few sporty models, which are usually pretty good. I'd be curious to know if there are fun to drive Corolla's and Camry's out there. I'm not optimistic, but maybe. On the other hand, Toyota reliablity fans may want to consider that other companies can build reliable cars, it's not a monopoly out there.
My biggest issue is mice as I store some of my cars outside, no other option (5-6 cars, 2 car garage) but mice are a problem in the garage as well. Bucket traps, poison, peppermint spray, I’ve tried it all, even got a cat (he ran away) but all the tests I’ve seen say that those electronic repellents don’t work at all.
I just found your channel. As a fellow "Old guy" (43) I so appreciate this video. I also think we share some similar taste. I daily a GX470 and I'm currently putting a K24 in an NA Miata. Cheers! Genius quote, "Character is more important than stats."
Wow this is one of your best! All of it's great advice, but the items that are more about how to approach life generally are my favorite. You have a couple around how to comport yourself, how to treat other people, and generally not be a jackwagon....I really appreciate those. We have our monthly Larz Anderson Auto Museum (Boston) cars & coffee coming up this Saturday, and there's one old timer who has a '56 Chevy that's kind of a parts bin car who's guaranteed to be there....I'll take your advice and chat him up a bit. All the best, and enjoy your 30's as they wind down!!
Been watching your content for nearly 2 years now. Found your stuff when I was looking at things to do for my 4th gen 4runner that I purchased back in 2022. Your content inspired me to do more to make my ownership experience better. You’re right in that you should support the businesses and people that create what you like, so I bought an “Old but Gold” tee from your website. Much love. ❤
Just drove ALL trucks and even a Bronco back in January when I bought my first car in over 16 years. Completely agree with a bias towards a certain brand.
Great video! Thank you for sharing your passion and lessons. Your discussion on brand loyalty really resonated with me, as I grew up with American cars and my father had a preference for Nissan hard-body pickups. I was a fan of VW and, in my late teens and early twenties, I loved Cadillacs. However, I switched to Toyota and Lexus, and if I had been loyal, I would have never made the switch. As of today, these two cars from these two brands make sense; perhaps in the future, they won't. Keep up the good work 🎉
Just got my dream car an 11th gen civic si and i absolutely love it and it is no where near fast lol i still love driving in it and seeing it every morning in the pasking lot. I used to be a huge dodge fan owned doges forever then dodge sold out for ev and i got into honda big time and have ownwd 3 of them now lol.
A lot of this is stuff I'm trying to emulate at 22. I'm a lifelong car guy, but around age 16-17 I got pretty into the "jerkwad scumbag" side of the Japanese Import community. Now as a married adult with less disposable income (adult bills sure are something), I find myself drawn less towards specced out highway champions and more towards cars I find interesting. The only sports car I'm actually aiming to buy is an AW11 MR2 and those are relatively affordable. I'm also planning on trading my T100 SR5 for a Subaru BRAT since I still want a truck but would like something a little more interesting.
Some girls like my car, but not cause its fast or cool, but because its "cute" or nice looking. Its a 07 Cobalt SS 2.4 in rally yellow. Its looks good for the most part, but aint nothin too special.
Don't buy someone else's project. I did, i fell in love with it while fixing it, it just kept breaking on me, but i never gave up. I'm gonna have to scrap her in 2 weeks. All my hard work gone just like that, after 2 engines the third one is what did it for me. I'm gonna miss it but i can't keep stressing about this car anymore. I'm happy i did this mistake but i lost a lot of money and more importantly, time. 3 years of my life constantly worrying about her, fixing it up, racing it doing stupid shit and all. But she was a dead shell when i bought it and it's a dead shell now, again.
So I need some advice I just turned 21 and I drive a bmw 230i 2023 to school 80 miles a day (virtual work) I love cars and want to step up to something more. Should I do an exhaust on my current car or should I save that money and buy an M440i and an M2/M4 I like my fuel economy but want more power and a higher top speed but I also want the car to be louder with some pops and the exhaust isn’t welded but also chokable with the push of a button. Please I need some wisdom
My 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 with a manual transmission long-term owner's review has a bunch of points about the Tacoma I've seen nowhere, yet nobody has even seen that video. SO YEAH: AUTOMOTIVE UA-cam IS GOOD IN A FEW WAYS AND LOUSY IN EVEN MORE. And I'm not a Toyota Fanboy, but rather, just somebody who lost count of how many cars I've owned somewhere after 35, including two motorcycles, or not, or whatever...
It's easy to blame YT when our vids flop (I do too) but sometimes it really just comes down to the quality of our content. I took a quick look at your Taco vid and it didn't have any cars in it! It seems like you have an interesting personality on camera so I would really encourage you to make that vid again. This time around, either have your Tacoma in it with you or at least put some b-roll shots over it so people can visualize what you're talking about. Study the strategies behind thumbnail/title design and I think your vid could really do well! There's still a ton of opportunity for growth on this platform and I think you could do really well.
Funny I turn 39 in a few months Have a 4th gen Tacoma wife drives a 4runner and I had a 91 mr2 turbo a few years ago had to sell it but now things are better financially soon as the new mr2 gets unveiled I will put a deposit down..
If you were 9 today, what do you wish your dad would buy and keep for 10 years (even if you don't know it yet as the 9 year-old but will understand when you're 19...)
Car scene dies when people were more concerned with the dollar sign than characteristics. Car guys used to be so cool. Just going to look at a car went from friendly experiences that you could make friends from to hostile salesmen like experiences where youre more likely to get into an arguement. Every car guy is trying to screw eachother over. Lowballing for someone elses car, beating the crap out if it and then trying to sell it for more. Or just treating it like a stock and never driving it hoping they triple their investment. The car scene is so lame now.
I disagree that women don’t care about your car, if they know nothing about cars they do care if it looks nice and drives well, she doesn’t want to get into something fast but embarrassing or unsafe.
It's possible he's just loyal to low maintenance vehicles. I have a bunch of Toyotas. If another brand made a car with similar build quality, reliability and maintenance requirements for cheaper I'd switch in a heart beat. Zero brand loyalty.
When it comes to owning Toyotas it's not driven by loyalty, it's logic. Coming from a guy who's wife drives a Toyota, I drive a GX470, and my hobby car I'd a Mazda with a Honda engine. I've also owned just about every other brand out there.
@@johnmurraycompton569 yeah, doesn't stop Toyota from making some downright crap though. For example the 2az Fe is an excellent engine on paper but was so poorly executed it got lawsuits, not to mention Toyota's known subpar piston ring design. They're not a bad brand and they make solid cars, they're just not as good as they say I think
You’re lying bro I’m 24 my girl loves my cars. You don’t gotta be a “car/bike guy” to enjoy cars/bikes. I get plenty of compliments from guys n girls for my cars. As long as you are not a pos you’ll do good at life trust me. And if you are just doing things to impress other people and validations you are lost brother/sister

"Character > specs" As an RX8 owner I couldn't agree more!
I would love to be able to just rev the crap out of an rx8 everyday!
One of us, one of us, one of us. I love mine too. Just wish i had a 231 instead of 192. Just for the 10k rpm (Reality is i don't need it but for shits and giggles). Outside of that, I'm blessed with owning my dream car.
My rx8 is epic
Rx8 is actually one of the best handing cars ever made with one of the best chassis ever made
Best advice i have been told over the years being in RX7s.
Quite a few good nuggets of wisdom. Especially about how cars are made to be driven and not sit in a shed, nor be a means to seek attention
All great advice! The joy ride for friends and family thing is right on the money. Not only are you likely to break your car trying to impress someone, you're putting your passengers life in danger. I've seen it happen and the guilt can stick with you for life.
"Don't do irreversible mods to your car..." [receives advice long after chopping off all IFS components to install solid axle]
Haha RIP
This is the first video of yours that I have seen and I have to say that you are now one of my favorite automotive creators. As an early twenties guy who wants to become an enthusiast, this video was extremely helpful. Hope you have a nice day!
Appreciate you!
Agreed on all points. Last time I took someone out on a joy ride (it was on a road course), I spun out on the very first corner. Luckily, I didn't quite make it to the tire wall.
“Never save your car for the next guy”
ive heard of an analogy of "save your girl so shes a virgin for the next guy"
Thanks for being real
1:50 great advice. Only time I mention my weekend car is if they ask, and I keep it brief unless they are very much interested.
Much appreciated!
Don't be an asshole, also don't start fights. Appreciate other vehicles and if you have nothing good to say don't say it.
From a 39 year old Canadian gear head. Your advice in this video is spot on. Great video 👍
Man o man, thank you!!
Happy your channel popped up on my feed and became a new subscriber 😊
Appreciate you!
Also, one tip if you don’t have a climate controlled garage, or park your cars outside is DAMP-RID. I get the ones in a bucket and the ones that hang, they help keep the moisture down and keep away the musty smell/mold etc…worth the $10-$15 per car.
Great advice I'm 43 and Have outgrown a lot of the mods i've done
Character over stats perfectly describes the Miata in my profile picture. Stock power with mainly suspension, brakes, and tires. I encourage anyone to find that for themselves whether it’s a Pontiac Aztek or something like your MR2.
What about an LS-swapped Miata? :) I jest, they're great no matter the motor.
Great video!!
I’ve got a 2018 4runner. My “overlanding” rig. KMs are signs that Im having fun. More miles = more adventures. I hope to just keep ‘em coming
My brother has a mr2 and i really like yours😎
But in regards to the character thing:
The car has good torque, is very analog (no electronic fancy bs inside), is fun to drive, has good fuel economy, plenty of space inside and visibility is great. Hell I can load up all my musical gear inside and drive to a gig and still fit 3 other people inside. She's an old lady, but I have rarely felt as good in any other new car I've tried. 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you for the advice big bro , really appreciate it 🫶🏽💪🏽

Finally another video on rims and tyres!!!
My best advice for fellow canadians is to put antiseize on your winter rims 😂😂

Wow truly amazing 👏 thanks for sharing

I appreciated this
thanks for the advice, happy anniversary 😅

Don't buy someone else's project. I did, i fell in love with it while fixing it, it just kept breaking on me, but i never gave up. I'm gonna have to scrap her in 2 weeks. All my hard work gone just like that, after 2 engines the third one is what did it for me.

Great advice 👍
Great video
I don't care if my car is slow. It sounds, feels fast and you can really ring out the gears in traffic
Funny I turn 39 in a few months Have a 4th gen Tacoma wife drives a 4runner and I had a 91 mr2 turbo a few years ago had to sell it but now things are better financially soon as the new mr2 gets unveiled I will put a deposit down..
He had an MR2 at 19. We’re not worthy!!
Hey, it was cheap back in the day (2004), nevertheless still a nice car
@@MrBoubakar290 Great taste.
@@super8mate i mean, i own one too (European NA)
If you were 9 today, what do you wish your dad would buy and keep for 10 years (even if you don't know it yet as the 9 year-old but will understand when you're 19...)
@@super8mate i mean a Lexus IS F would be a great choice honestly.
You got the build quality, style and a decent V8.
Ask Roger Rodas why you shouldn’t take friends for joy rides.
The car scene is so lame now.
banger vid
I disagree that women don’t care about your car, if they know nothing about cars they do care if it looks nice and drives well, she doesn’t want to get into something fast but embarrassing or unsafe.
want to review my miata? I’m also in the same area!
But are guys impress on what kind purse 👛 🤔 or bag a woman carries.
My wife likes ,Mercedes, bmw, caddys, women care to
Brand loyal lol, says the guy who owns 3 Toyota's haha
And a Harley Davidson! To be fair, I didn't even buy the Tacoma lol
@@CanadianGearheadevery other cruiser is just better. Did you try them out?
sorry i gotta fail the first one with tesla "drivers" they are literally the worst, they are the only people i will judge.
Eh
You’re lying bro I’m 24 my girl loves my cars. You don’t gotta be a “car/bike guy” to enjoy cars/bikes. I get plenty of compliments from guys n girls for my cars. As long as you are not a pos you’ll do good at life trust me. And if you are just doing things to impress other people and validations you are lost brother/sister
He said the vast majority. He's correct. Source: am girl and am friends with a lot of other girls
0:19 anything with wheels on it. Now I get why girls like roller skates.
