      Noël Treviño I love cassettes. I agree many people think of cassettes in a bad way, probably because of the cheap Chinese hunk boomboxes etc.
      I got a few decks with Dolby s. Now that was something! I love cassettes and they sound good!

    It isn't just tapes. Records are also making a comeback. I think people just prefer the analog sound over the digital one. I like CD's, but I would much rather listen to an old record or tape.

    • @DarkAngelEU
      @DarkAngelEU 6 років тому +13

      It's not about the sound, like they pointed out quite accurately it's about the physicality. Kids nowadays grow up with everything digital so it's only natural that when they find out there are physical media that they want to explore those.
      Digital is universal and elegant but doesn't have alot of room for error when it comes to creativity. Coding is something you learn, but you can't create it because other computers are not programmed to know what you're talking about. With analog media on the other hand, you can simply manipulate them the way you want and then you can convert it to digital files for distribution. It's a very natural process of hybridization, first we had an analog revolution, last century we had the digital and now we're figuring out the best of both :)

      I much prefer the analogue sound. It seems to have so much more breathing space between the instruments that seem to have a beginning, middle and end decay. Sounds tend to sound too mished together on digital especially CD's where they tend to have an artificial brightness or brutalness that tends to be fatiguing on the ears particularly at highish volume. Analogue just seems to sound so much smoother and detailed.

    Cassette's in 2020 are booming!
    Way more than 2017 guys! Rise Records, huge millennials band label just released all their bands on cassette.
    I found out if i record the albums and songs onto cassette from my Sony ZX6 dual cassette hi-fi system and even the cheap Walmart cassette boombox.
    When i play them in my Mustang 2006 Cassette deck.
    Turning Dolby off, it sounds exactly like the cd. Tons of bass and crystal clear! : D!
    ONLY USE DOLBY FOR DOLBY RECORDED CASSETTE's.
    If your recording it yourself. Turn dolby off, cars had the option in the menu to turn it on or off.
    I use ONN cassette's from Walmart. They are black "not the crystal clear ones" and i have no problems.
    My brother thought i was running it through Bluetooth and was like that's a cassette playing that?? : )

    I bought my tape in 1992 of Jose Carreras Amigos Para Siempre album and my second tape was AC/DC Thunderstruck album not long after, still have them. I have a realistic dual tape deck, its not high end by standard but its great for what I am asking of it. I have several dozen prerecorded and mix tapes that I've been collecting that hasn't stopped.
    I even have several dozen vynil records I've collected about the same time.
    I for general reasons have always disliked digital sounds over analogue.

    I’m looking for a cassette tape player/recorder that can play special tapes. The tapes have the vocal on one track and the instrumental part on the other track. With this player/recorder, you can play the vocal alone, or the instrumental part alone, or both together. I don’t think such tapes are made anymore, but I would be willing to buy the player/recorder to make full use of the tapes in my collection. Anyone know where I might find such cassette players?

    to continue enjoying this book, please turn cassettwe over and begin on side B. and if you experiance any difficaulties while playing this talking book cassettem, oease place a ribbon around one of the sppols, and place cassette braille side down!" were the two announcements i remember hearing when listening to NLS books on tape. was cool how i could speed it up to commercial speed and it'd sound like mice squeaking lol. another cool thing about them nls books was that the books were usually recorded using four audio tracks that were programmed in to the tape using special recording machines such as the aph four track tape recorder model they were selling for a LONG while. oh how i miss cassettes, and i have the opportunity to go back in time as i have two boxes of brand new, still in wrap maxill communicator series pro industrial black tapes. got them from a good friend who is a mini9ster at people's church in beloit. and how bout that bohemian rhapsidy! by queen. was a good band back then, how bout a bit of dire straits walk of life! keep them tapes coming back!

    In order for cassettes to make a real comeback, companies like Sony, Pioneer and others will have to make quality tape decks. Sony makes good players in their boom boxes, but many don't have a place to plug in a microphone. Also, these are not made to power large speakers. The supply of old tape decks will eventually dry up, and parts will not be available. The big electronic companies are not going to go backwards, they will spend their money on improving CD's and aim for the 95% of people that want the latest, not the latest fad.

    I read this with incredulity, Oh l embraced the cassette back in the 70s, and for a period my cassette player sat next to my turntable, and tuner.
    The sound mediocre, life span short, and sticking issues a trial. Perhaps high tech solutions of today might help this mediums limitations, a faster tape speed might help the sound. I do recall the hiss, and the blanketing effect of the Dolby. In the bowels of Christ do not go down this road, a passing folly.

    • @svenschwingel8632
      @svenschwingel8632 5 років тому

      The Compact Cassette's prime was between ~1985 and 1992. It was the time the best-ever tape formulations were produced. And good cassette decks were available from lots of manufacturers at reasonable prices with really high quality units starting at 400-500 US$. These machines offered low wow & flutter, stable tape transport and were able to be externally fine-tuned (calibrated) to almost all existing tape types with a two-point calibration which was necessary to make Dolby noise reduction work properly to avoid what you call "blanketing effect" which was present due to sensitivity mismatches between tape formulation and recording device. In the late 80's, a really good combination of tape and a properly aligned recorder was almost on a level with properly mastered CDs.
      By the early 90's, however, we already had the superior digital tape (DAT) and then the consumer-friendly MiniDisc available. Cassette quality started to go downhill. And from the mid-90's upward, people were able to burn CDs on their computers. The later Dolby S noise reduction system was awesome and Pioneer released the pinnacle recorder, the CT-95, in 1994. But even that thing was unable to save the format.
      Compact Cassette, DAT, DCC, MiniDisc ... they all died in the end.

    Analog machines will always tend to sound more natural to the human ear because it's apples to apples. Digital has to be converted back to analog to support our ear format. It tends to sound bright and less warm to some. Also, various compression of 128 to 192kbps in MP3s actually reduce the quality below that of cassettes. What people generally remember about tapes when it comes to sound quality was tape hiss along with wow / flutter and maybe their player ate one of their favorite tapes due to a maintenance, calibration or quality issue. Digital was appealing because the hiss, speed variations and flutter are all gone. No rewind or ff and in an instant you can repeat and or drag and drop a file and whalla, your play list. So why is the tape coming back? First, it's a low cost portable alternative to other formats. It's lower price makes the few undesirable aspects of the cassette tape tolerable to the new generation. Next, it is a physical form of expression when given as a gift. A mixed tape has more effort and time invested making it more thoughtful. It's kind of like giving your significant other a home cooked meal by candle light versus a steakhouse gift card or a thoughtful Christmas gift of that item they really wanted (showing you pay attention to them and took the time to make the gift special) versus snatching the gift card at the last second while in line at Wal-Mart. It's a physical format that can be given and that adds the that special moment some of the new generation are looking for. Most who have abandoned the cassette format forever from years gone by have never actually heard a modern cassette being played on a high end machine with HX-Pro, Dolby C or S with closed loop dual capstan mechanism. Therefore, saturated tape hiss along with wow and flutter and eaten tapes forever linger within their memory. With the new formula of tape today combined with a high end deck from the early to mid 90's, tape his is gone, wow and flutter is gone. You no longer have to sacrifice high frequencies to knock down the hiss like Dolby B. I have performed many tests where I asked folks to tell me if I was playing a tape or CD. It was 50/50 on the guesses. Some people are able to pick up on the extra brightness that digital produces. To some this extra detail in the digital format seems unnatural. On the cassettes, the lack of any hiss, the clear piano and guitar sounds lacking flutter and speed variations threw folks for a loop when digital playback was thought to be the source of audio.. You could see the facial expression change when they realized their memory of cassettes and how they sounded was worse than they really could sound. Their memory of sound quality was based on the quality of the machine they had and the recording source along with tape formula they used at the time. There is a youtube video called "Cassettes, Better than you don't remember". I encourage you to watch this. Sums it up quite well.

    Dear sir;
    Even though the cassette may comeback, I still prefer cd or vinyl to them. Cassettes are good for recording lp’s or cds onto and other things like class lectures, choir practices, etc. I do not care for prerecorded cassettes as they are easily damaged. A magnet will erase them;for example. I preferr the cd recorder by far over the cassette recorder for recording lp’s or other cds or tapes. because of their superior sound quality , durability, and convenience. I would like to see the cd recorder come back as a separate component for home stereo systems.
    Sincerely
    Tony.

    I threw away all my cassettes, I will never start cassette again, I’m happy to have CDs, some mass produced cassettes sounded bad in the 80s n 90s and they are pain in the butt, cleaning magnetic head, sometimes tape got stuck, rewind in order to repeat a song. Some cassette single sounded crappy too even with good equipments. Cassettes are the young millennials things.

      I grew up with cassettes in 70s & 80s and i love them but i have to say that you are very right about it ,
      Cassettes wear out the more we play them cause of the friction with the heads and pintch rollers even if we don't use them the dry out and make the heads even more dirty than fresh cassettes
      Vinyl records the same but they last longer than cassettes but they suffer from motor & surface noise
      CDs from the other hand last way longer the don't suffer from friction and if we take good care of them they can last a whole human life-time seriouslly i've read that in a hi-fi audio-video magazine back in late 90s in an article which said that CDs can last even 100 years with the same sound quality it's only the CDplayers we need to replace
      I have CDs since 1991 and they all sound the same as good as the 1st day i bought them but not even a single one cassette or vinyl record could do that they have sound problems .
      CDs are the best for me and they are my main music player as also they've been since i've met them

      @@Badassvidsz I heard the bit about CD's lasting 100 years some time in the 90's. I doubt that unless they were very carefully cared for. I've got some records that are 50-60 years old and poorly cared for with a lot of scratches and apart from a bit of surface noise most still play perfectly unlike some CD's I've had from the late 80's that aren't even scratched that suffered disc rot.

    This resurgence is driven by a romanticized idea of what pop culture was like in the recent past. The reality is, modern media formats are so much more versatile and superior in every way.

    I think he's wrong about his characterization of millenials. The majority of millenials had physical media when they were children, and many older ones had CDs and tapes when they were in their teens, as well.

    Why is Matt Lier sitting between two women? Just joshin. Seriously, cassettes can sound really good, but once I used reel to reel I never or rarely go back to tapes. There are three types of tape: ferric, chrome and metal. The metal are the best but ferric gives good bass response. Chrome will give more treble. Metal has the least amount of tape hiss (that airy, snow -like noise caused by the tape particles running against the tape head). There was a fourth tape fornat: ferric chrome, but it never took off. Most tapes are ferric so use Dobly NR during playback but not when recording. Also do not store tapes on top of speakers or anything magnetic. Hope this helps.

    Now there are only low-quality cassette players available. I wish that they made high-end cassette decks these days. 3 heads, dual capstan and flywheels made out of metal. Walkman style cassette players are still made but these are garbage. They are nothing when compared to my sony wm-ex670.

    The problem is the quality of these tapes are terrible. If they used a hi-end chrome tape and used Dolby-HX then ok, but these are using type I ferric tape, which is awful. Second is the low quality of cassette players on the market. Unless it's a Philips, SONY, Pioneer, Denon or Nakamichi. You will get a very low-fi playback.

      @@NintendoDude888 yeah, but the thing is: cassette tape had its prime between 1987 and 1992 when the best formulations were used. Getting some of those cassettes new will cost you dearly. The stuff that is still being made like the Maxell UR is utter crap from china, though.
