This video provides an overview of gastroparesis.
You will learn about the 3 major diet recommendations to assist in the management of symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
You will also learn appropriate mealtime behaviors and options for nutrition support if tolerance to an oral diet cannot be established.
Gastroparesis is a chronic disorder that’s characterized by delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction.
It's most common in patients with diabetes.

Thank you for this! Just want to add a remark about fat content - as someone with idiopathic gastroparesis, I was told early on to avoid fatty foods, but for two reasons. One of course is the delay in gastric emptying, but the other is that fatty foods cause acid production, and a lot of us with gastroparesis also suffer from acid reflux as a result of the delayed emptying. So even if fatty foods don't significantly affect emptying times, they may trigger acid reflux. Just something else to consider in addition to all of the great info you provided!

    • @mindpower2824

Acid reflux happens due to A LACK OF ACID. That's why indigestion and heartburn takes place... Taking antacids is the WORST thing someone can take if he/she suffers from delayed digestion.
Taking HCL betaine or sipping lemon juice throughout the day is the most recommended thing.

I grew up wanting to be a dietician so badly. I wanted to help and educate people about loving food as you would medicine. I loved and excelled in each of my college courses regarding food and dietetics. 4-5 years postgraduate, I totally burned out on this because I couldn’t apply it to myself or the very least, get my doctors to understand my condition of gastroparesis. My GI is nice but has no experience or ability to treat my illness. I’ve been dealing with that on top of bowel issues, kidney problems etc.., since I was 4 however no one really knew how to diagnose it, let alone how to treat it. So twenty years later it got a whole lot worse….
What’s worse is I’m allergic to all the anti nausea medication like reglan and causes severe nerve issues. Or like zofran it doesn’t work and gives me QT intervals. There’s really nothing they can do except tell me to go to the hospital. There ends up a time where I cannot stop vomiting no matter what, and I have to force myself to go to the er/hospital but more than the physical pain I am in, it is mentally taxing being around people who have no idea what Gastroparesis even is. A lot of the times they think that I have an eating disorder because they correlate it to my weight always being low but that’s my metabolism and also that’s from vomiting for 24-48 straight. Truthfully, yes I cannot eat sometimes though because my stomach is in so much pain but last I checked that was part of the epidemiology, not anorexia. They just don’t get it, don’t care, and are ever so rude. So after constantly getting accused of this and eventually having to go to a treatment center to get an NG tube to gain weight a good amount of weight back. After all was said and done I quit my practice. One I was actually really quite good at. Albeit I had lost my happiness among most things considered important to me and my health started to decline again. I read a medical journal on gastroparesis that if you don’t have diabetes and you have it idiopathically, that it’s 0.02%. So rare..

Sorry no one understands. It is very disheartening. I have nothing as major as you. But I do have a slow digestion and have bowl and constipation issues. I got sick bad two years ago and lost a lot of weight and couldn't put any back on. I have a few okay weeks then I will have major digestion problems. I will think I'm getting better to not really. I am taking magnesium glycinate. It helps me relax and sleep well. I take just a small amount of b1.... that seems to help move the muscles of digestion and most days helps move the food through. I take b12 drops ... it took about six months for that to help my energy level. I do feel better now. But if I eat protein seems I have more digestion problems. I am very sensitive to smells and can't be around perfume. I hope you get to feeling better. I am 64 years old. I have had to not work most of my life. I had several nice jobs.... one was in Nutrition myself.... I had to quit.... I know lots about food health and things to do to be well.... but being sick myself I hate to give advice to anyone....

I have GP secondary to Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos, but not nearly as bad as many others. I do well on a primarily animal-based diet low in fiber, seeds, and nuts, avoiding seed oils and grains, and am able to eat plenty of fat, which I find helpful for other comborbidities.

  • @adamguymon7096

I was diagnosed with GP. I am overweight. In 2003 I had a laparoscopic Nissen and ever since I cannot drink carbonated drinks and I can only drink with a straw. When I was a kid I have always had a very hard time being able to eat many different types of foods like many fruits and vegetables. My entire life if I was to eat a salad I would get sick the minute I put it in my mouth let alone if I was to get any of it down? For example, if I have a burger it could only have the bun meat and cheese and no spread of any kind. No mayo etc. If I was to have a tuna fish sandwich it could only be made with butter plane. I have been trying to lose weight but have been having a hard time doing so? I was just put on a medication called Metformin because I was told I was producing too much insulin and that was causing me to gain weight? I hate the food pyramid and even the my plate because they don't address issues like GP and other dietary issues? Because I am legally blind and use a power chair with limited mobility it's hard to read labels and count calories to be healthy and know what will help me lose weight and live healthier? I wish someone could make a video about this issue?

Your comment about producing too much insulin suggests that you are pre diabetic or full diabetic T2D! Also you seem to be able today animal product. Look into a low carb diet, 10% or less of carbs. That will clear up GERD and also drop your blood sugars, along with insulin levels. Also, watch your meds as sugar will drop, lessening your insulin and metformin needs. First, talk to doctor about what you want to do. After he tells you that you are nuts and that won't work, find a doctor who uses low carb or ketogenic protocols. Don't do anything without doctor supervision!

I have severe gastroparesis that I've had symptoms of my entire life but was FINALY diagnosed at 43. I have been able to eat nothing but primer protein drinks for the last 6 months. while I am diabetic, it is extremely well controlled and never tested above 300 at any point and I have an A1C of 5.6. I was told again and again that it's because of uncontrolled blood sugar. I finally had to pull out my monitor and show them... my blood sugars are NOT uncontrolled. I do however have hEDS. The dr had never even heard of it and I was pretty shocked. It's a genetic connective tissue disorder that IS linked with gastroparesis. I don't understand how doctors that work with gastroparesis don't know about connective tissue diseases when the digestive tract is all connective tissue. They offered no help or advice other than 'here is medication and follow these diet guidelines.' .... when I'm literally surviving on protein drinks and have lost 60 lbs in 6 months. The dr was quick to tell me that this isn't a fatal disorder and I was like .... yeah? Then why is it killing me?!

I'm looking for information about the extreme pain that caused me to go to the ER 3 times this month, and I am waiting on an endoscopy to confirm GP caused by Ozempic for weight loss. The pain is worse than when I shattered my ankle or gave birth to each of my 3 kids. It's like a contraction, but of the stomach, and it contracts so hard that I dry heave and eventually vomit if there is anything to vomit.
Does anyone else experience this? I feel completely alone, and the doctors have no real answers yet. IV opiates stop the pains, but this is not the answer for me if these attacks continue. I have 4 kids at home I am raising, and constant pain meds just isn't realistic for me. Help?

I have had messed up digestion ever since pregnancy. I had such bad heartburn it made me puke more than the nausea during it. Ever since then the heartburn never went away and I feel my digestion never went back to normal after giving birth. I feel like after eating but as soon as it starts digesting (which starts soonish after but then lasts hours!) My stomach cannot handle the feeling and I almost burn it back up and feel the burn. So sometimes if I won't be able to sleep, I have to force it out. But dont want to keep having to throw up. Or be labeled as a bulimic.

You can ask for a gastric emptying test - they will feed you an egg sandwich with trace amounts of an element that can be seen with a special type of radiation-detecting camera. They watch the sandwich travel through your gastric system and use that to determine how long it takes for your stomach to empty halfway. With that information they can definitively tell if you have gastroparesis, and if you do, how severe it is.

    • @Julius_S
      @Julius_S Рік тому +1

Also - there are phases to the gastroparesis diet, which begin with liquids-only. If you're having severe issues, you can begin with stage 1, and try only consuming liquids like Ensure and soup (plain soup with no bits of chicken, etc...), then after a few days moving on to things like saltines and mashed potatoes. As you add foods back in you will find your tolerance level. But the first step is always to give your stomach a break by consuming only liquids for at least a day or two. Check out this nice guide here for more details: www.unitypoint.org/cedarrapids/filesimages/Services/Digestive%20Health/Information%20Regarding%20Your%20Diet%20Progression%20for%20Gastroparesis%202013.pdf

There are even studies to prove it. Also many people are getting good results with swedish bitters so you can give that a try too & lastly, there's a product called iberogast that also is very effective for many people. If you decide to try these then try them separately especially if you take the iberogast, make sure you take it on it's own & don't mix it with anything else. The ginger & artichoke can be taken together & the swedish bitters should maybe be taken on its own as well, don't take it with anything. Give these supplements a try & see if it helps. I almost didn't respond to your message because of your language but this is what I what I was told by a gastro specialist. If you were tested and diagnosed with gastroparsis and you have diabetes you have much better chance of getting help with a nutritionist. Ask your gastro specialist or your diabetes doctor for a nutritionist, your insurance with pay for it. A nutritionist is really important. I can't get help because I don't have diabetes but I have much other gastro diseases along with gastroparsis. Now, in your words who is f...ed.
