I’m half Israeli and half mexican but was born in mexico, and I was so happy to see how amazed by mexican side was at the dances we did at my sisters wedding
I'm not Jewish either, but I grew up in a municipality adjoining Philadelphia, PA, and almost all of my friends at that time were Jewish. The result is I heard this song enough times, whether I or they wanted me to or not (and my friends were not religious, and some not even quite "cultural Jews"). I say "rejoice and be happy." What's not to like?
I’ve loved this ever since I was eight years old and heard Harry Belafonte sing the lyrics on a 45 rpm. One of the first pieces of music I ever heard, and it went straight into my soul
This song ALWAYS takes me back to my Southside of Chicago High School 1976-1980 days. During that time, my school & this neighborhood where it's located was & still is an all Black community. But, we were STILL taught by White teachers. Our freshman music teacher we thought was a bit strange, but I guess we were too @ 14 years old.🙈 One day, in class maybe she was contemplating on what she was going to teach us, and came up with this song that she played on the piano. Then she would stop and guide us through the dance routine! We TRULY thought she'd lost her mind. But, we had too after we had a few classes with her. When we left that class for a different class, math or science whatever, we were exhausted, giddy, curious as to why she wanted us to learn it. When I told my mom about this, she explained that, #1. It was a Jewish folk song and she heard it as a child in her Hasidic Jewish neighborhood. (My mother is biracial) & my grandmother was a single parent) & (Black Christian family here). #2. Don't be so quick to judge! Keep an open mind to new things. #3. Maybe my music teacher was Jewish, and wanted to "share HER heritage" with us! So, I went back to school and shared this new-found information with my classmates which gathered a bit more support & participation from my classmates who were resistant to try the dance! ✌🏾🙏🏽 Thanks Mrs. McGuire. This memory has lasted 40+ years in my head.🤣😂🤣😂🙏🏽#PeaceandUnderstanding
