Well as a person whose intimately acquainted with the streets of Joburg, he didn't actually walk through Hillbrow. He drove through. The only time he was walking was around Diagonal Street (near The Franklin), thats where he saw the "non-white" sign.
As a South African I would never walk through 80% of the areas you’ve been. I would honestly just feel too nervous and unsafe and I’ve been robbed before while walking in Durban City so I can’t even imagine how much worse Joburg is
There are poor people in every society. F.i. most East Europeans have been "poor" for centuries but it does not mean to be dirty and leave rubbish everywhere. It has more to do with culture than with socio-economic factors.
Xavier Smith but still Europe has some of the worst parts of the world. East European countries like Albania and counties like the uk are worse than South Africa
-- you don’t know at all wtf you’re talking about if you think any of the places you mentioned are better the SA. SA has gone to complete shit and a total failed state. People can make themselves happy by being delusional and think it’s alright when the locals are killing any foreigners. I’ve met so many whites that have fled from there to the US and their stories are enough for me to know what’s happening.

Thye main problem in South Africa was, that a Black ruling party membership card automatically qualified for becoming a city planner, Mayor, economist, top manager, etc. This was called "cadre deployment".
as a south african, i can tell you that there are many beautiful, wonderful parts of the country. but places such as the above shown are definitely too frightening for many a lifelong resident to go near.

I'm from Johannesburg and you just have to be aware and know where you can and can't go. Yes the crime level is horrendous but respect and show good will, just be very aware and never become complacent.
So if you have a problem with being short changed by a retailer or a begger becomes aggressive with you or you show the slightest bit of impatience with someone on the street, what then? Just walk away? Not good enough, I'm afraid, to say.

Caty Marvelous immigration is a world wide problem?? Do u think we are all descendants from a nationality? Literally everybody has a history of immigration in their blood. Maybe you meant to say illegal immigration
+DA REAL Johnny Appleseed I agree with you that we have always been multicultural and am not one of those people who feels we need to be kept separate. I believe individuals should be judged for their own actions only. That being said, there are a lot of problems stemming from the current mass migrations, some if it illegal (as in the case of SA and the US) and some of it legal (as in the case of Europe), due to scarcity of services and resources.
Caty Marvelous as opposed to the problems caused by the mass migration of your people to South Africa??? Lmao, these so-called problems caused by modern migration pale massively in comparison, love. Check yourself first.

Absolutely no point in going to JHB. Crime is crazy, city is ugly, nothing to see. You should've gone to Cape Town, lower crime rate, world class beaches, breathtaking mountain views, richer cultural heritage (it's the oldest city in SA) and better food.

This has been an issue brewing for decades, and just because whites people are now longer in power, doesn’t mean it’s getting worse. For the native black people, South Africa is slowly recovering
The dangerous area of Johannesburg looks pretty much the same as the bad parts of town in Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, and basically any American big cities. Does it make American cities more dangerous than those in South Africa?
Unfortunately white right wing racists dont care for such observations and comments, it doesnt fit thier apartheid nostalgia and narrative. They even ignore statistics.
Having spent my years in SA, it took me a trip outside the country to appreciate why they call it an unequal society in the world. The wealth gap it's extraordinary.

I grew up in South Africa and as a child I thought everything was great because you don't notice the corruption when you're that young. @Morgan Boucher Africa is not a country but a continent. South Africa is such an amazing country much better than some countries in Europe. But judging from the lack of your information you're an American.

I freaking love my country. People will tell you a lot but there's nothing like experiencing the highs and lows for yourself. I've stayed in shacks, villages, suburbs, townships, estates, even a big mansion for a while. I've been mugged, threatened, lost scared. I've been awestruck, seen love, been given food by strangers, walked on beaches, walked on world class city blocks. I have seen all the bad and I am still convinced that the good is worth it. My country has been through a lot but I wouldn't change a thing.❤
I was born and raised in Johannesburg until I was 10. My mom didn't think I'd have a future there, so she brought me to Germany back in 95. It was her best decision. My mom visits SA almost yearly because my gran is there (and other family members who didn't follow her to Germany). Update 2022: My beloved gran passed away 2020. I'd also like to clarify that my family is half German from my grandfather. While he stayed in South Africa since the 50s, we always used to come over to Germany to visit relatives some holidays. But the transition from two completely different cultures was quite an adventure. Especially for my mom.
I know a white South African who's showed me pictures of where she grew up, and it looked no different than an upper middle class suburb in the US. This video really showed a different perspective.
I'm from Eastern Europe - from Bulgaria, and I consider myself so lucky just by reading your comments. It must be a nightmare to live in a place with constant fear. I've never felt in danger in any Eastern European country. Never.
Nick Anderson sounds like what the colonists did to the Africans I guess the tables turned I'm actually happy to see why people finally become the victim tired of seeing people of color be victim to white supremacy
Yes finally someone got it right. The high and mighty ANC leaders in their huge safe mansions and then...the poverty and dirt of the rest in South Africa.
Put lie detectors in all of South Africa's government offices and police stations. Honest civil servants, assist in helping foreign investors and tourists have confidence in investing and touring. Currently, the economy sucks because Zuma pillaged and raped to his heart's content. Reversing this economic nightmare and creating jobs, would cost one million rand for the lie detectors. Think about it, honest South African civil servants! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
The ANC was not responsible for the abject poverty that was caused there. To turn all of that around is going to take a generation. There are some wealthy blacks but much of the wealth still resides in the hands of the white south africans....don't lose sight of that.

There are certain economic realities that exist on the continent and South Africa is at the center. Whatever your experience with South Africa 🇿🇦, I can tell you, by being with that gentleman who drove you around coupled with sheer luck, you avoided some seriously bad things that could have happened to you if you were a traveler walking alone on the streets of hillbrow and soweto. South Africa has places that are completely No-go areas for white people, especially travelers. You go to those places with guaranteed absolute certainty that you are going to be mugged, beaten and killed (especially when you are white). South Africa has some of the most dangerous city areas in the world. In South Africa people get killed by thugs for things like cellphones, your wallet, your necklace, watch etc. Don't ever come back and try to make a vlog on Johannesburg by walking on the streets of the city, even if you have a tour guide. You may not be as lucky.
I am really not surprised by arguments, especially from people who come from these dangerous areas. Naturally, some people will try to cover up, protect and justify, no matter how ugly things are; but that doesn't take away reality on the ground (for instance; recently, a person was arrested in Soweto after being found with human body parts in his refrigerator). It is a well known universal fact that South Africa has some of the most dangerous places in the world. Ask any white South African living in South Africa 🇿🇦

I’ve been there 2 years a go. Its a beautiful city. Very unique. Some part of the city reminds me of the cities in Holland. The security guards at the hotel was fully equipped with riffles. The hotels window cover with steel bar. The shops are closed at 8pm. According to locals, they scare of robbery.
I am originally from the UK and can tell you that most shops close at around 5.30pm. There are some, usually supermarkets, that close about 9pm and some even stay open all night. It is the same here in SA and it is not always the fear of robberies but more the fact that the later they stay open the higher their costs in respect of staff wages, electricity, etc. If the increase in sales does not cover these extra costs and they do not make a bigger profit then it becomes uneconomic.

John 3:16-17 KJV "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."
Dude, really don't think you got the full picture. Firstly the hostels were build by the mines to offer accommodation to migrant workers from froreign nationals being employed by the mines because black South Africans didn't want to work in the mines. Secondly there were no tin shanties build by the SA government of that time. I notice that you were not taken to see the original government build homes or schools of that era. They are the solid face brick buildings. And the tin shanties are not only accommodating only foreign nationals, but are mostly occupied by SA citizen's who after 26 years of waiting in these terrible conditions are still being overlooked for receiving the government promise of a RDP home. Most of the RDP houses are given to foreign nationals through bribes to government officials. I personally know a lot of our previously disadvantaged people. That is the story you should of followed and not the propaganda lies you put in this privelaged obviously incentivised trip to Gauteng. I also want to point out that you were in Gauteng and not in the Cape when you signed out of the interview.
I lived around Johannesburg for two years. Definitely stood out as a foreigner, but if you keep your wits about you and treat people with kindness and respect, you can avoid most, if not all trouble. I walked through Hillbrow a few times (during mid day), and would visit a friend who lived in the township of Tembisa. If you find yourself around Tembisa, visit Busy Corner and ask them about the white boy who was celebrating Heritage Day with the locals a few years back - memories (,:
@Nina I also failed to mention that I'm 194cm tall and considered pretty fit then. This would have made me a perceived "not so easy target", and maybe that's why I never ran into trouble. Still, humanizing yourself by interacting with people and remaining friendly could be beneficial in preventing a robbery to your person's, but also this is how we should treat people regardless. I still believe that common sense trumps all of this: not wearing expensive clothes or jewelry if you have it, don't flash around cash, keep your items in deeper pockets where they don't stick out, etc.
You need to read SAPS statistics because You clearly don't know what You are talking about. Nearly 23 000 murders in RZA 2020->2021 a nearly 15% increase from the year before. Google SAPS Statistics ,
@Cromagnum Veritas ignorance is bliss. Not total ignorance, but even knowing the numbers (and realizing that there is reason to believe anybody could be a number including myself), I'm trying to get the point across that South Africa shouldn't be fully discredited for all it has to offer. This beautiful country lives in a shadow of negativity, and it's a shame. Know the area, keep your wits about you, go at an appropriate time, and be respectful. Maybe my risk tolerance is higher, or maybe I'm sharing a perspective that isn't shared by most, all I'm saying is: May God Bless South Africa and Protect Her People.

I compare the colonisation of Africa by Europeans, with the colonisation of, say, Britain by the Romans. They were a much more advanced civilisation than the Britons. They raised our standards, built roads gave us some technology and organisational structure. When they left the Britons just reverted to type, not having the education, knowledge etc to even maintain what they had built and it took at least a thousand years for the British to get anywhere close to Roman Technology and organisational ability. You see this all over Colonial Africa. In only 40 yrs, it's clear that the African governments are not able to maintain what was left, far less add to it. Johannesburg and Hillbrow were brilliant places in the seventies. The Carlton centre was being built when I was there and it represented an exciting future. Sadly, it's just not possible to enable everyone to benefit instantly; which you acknowledge in your video...that takes a LONG, LONG time.....it's just the practicality of doing it...nothing clever. The difference is that there is now the internet. People see how the 'first' world live, they can see how to get there and they're not willing to wait a thousand years. Hence the current hyper-migration of populations from poor to rich countries. It is survival, it is unstoppable and, again, I believe that there is a possible analogy with Rome in that they were destroyed by floods of poor populations who had heard, by the grapevine, of the marvels and wealth in Rome... I think it's likely that Rome was just overwhelmed by migrants which pre-empted the 'proper' military invasions. Populations will always flow from rich to poor countries.... who can blame them..(us)? It was the same from Europe to America, until relatively recently. Even I remember watching all the latest USA advances and the way they lived, in the cinemas in the fifties when I was a boy and I intended to emigrate there....in the event I ended up in RSA instead. The cinema was the Internet of the day! In fact, back in the seventies and eighties there was a huge amount of illegal black migration from adjacent mismanaged countries like Zimbabwe.....the native black South Africans even tried to make it uncomfortable for the migrants due to the old problem of undercutting labour and taking the jobs of the locals. Migration for the usual reasons....wanting a better life. It's easy to forget that in Countries like India, for example, the British designed and organised the 30-40,000 miles of railways which are still in use today.... the labour was Indian of course and, similarly, it was the Irish who built much of Britain's infrastructure in the 18/19th centuries. OK they were built for non-altruistic reasons at the time in India...like the Roman roads in Britain. It seems that the wealthy, advanced colonising countries provide a living for the impoverished populations of the day whose descendants, satisfyingly, can benefit from their endeavours at a later date. No Axe
It was also the British who closed down all the factories in India and stopped the colonies industrialising ...Cotton laws...Corn laws.. British did some good things but also some very bad things...Boer war, penal law and great famine in Ireland , famines in India when they exported the food in WWII
Dodo M What? In "The Rainbow Nation"? I don't believe you! Stop with your propaganda! South Africa is a haven of multiculturalism where people of every colour live in total harmony now that nasty apartheid has been abolished. That's what the world was sold, right?
Andile Mkhuma WOW, I’m an idiot... that’s a strong word. The fact is, South Africa was first settled in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company, and there was NO existing black civilization there. Your videos give me a look into a World I will never have the chance to see. The way you show it, it's not as scary as the Media and others have told me over the years. I also, like the music clips you use in some of your videos. Thanks again for showing us the World from your perspective. You have a great attitude and outlook on life.

When I went to SA (great, beautiful country full of great, beautiful people) I had thought Johannesburg was overhyped as a rough place and was super excited to go prove myself right. But holy shit, skimming by the city (by land, I was in between flights in transit to Windhoek nextdoor) was like that scene in The Wizard Of Oz when Dorothy and crew approach OZ through the poppies with a great, rich emerald dome rising out of nowhere all by itself, but in absolute reverse, like Oz had been set on fire by aerial bombing and left to smoulder. With nuclear power plants. Goddamn surreal. Leaving through Joburg's airport a month later I struck up a conversation with a guy, early 20's. Afrikaner dude, said he'd been carjacked 3 times IN HIS OWN DRIVEWAY, BEHIND A FENCE, IN A GATED COMMUNITY BEHIND WALLS, IN THE SUBURBS ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY (It's a post-colonial ex-minority rule thang). Said that the last time, he had just walked out his parent's front door, saw the carjacker, threw the keys over and walked right the fuck back into the house HA HA!

Let's not bring politics into this
The ANC was not responsible for the abject poverty that was caused there. To turn all of that around is going to take a generation. There are some wealthy blacks but much of the wealth still resides in the hands of the white south africans....don't lose sight of that.
@@nagone11 the south african government is shit and the education there is really bad but that is not the fault of white people. Your government are the ones deciding over those things and theyre not white are they?

Lies, unamanga. White people can go wherever they want. "No go areas" gtfoh lmao

Tell me the story
kindness wont help you at all. they're robbing everyone the same
@Nina I also failed to mention that I'm 194cm tall and considered pretty fit then.

2:20 my new morning wake up tune!
Hey there, I actually live in Johannesburg and I just wanted to inform you that Hillbrow used to be a decent place to live (fairly wealthy area) about 20 to 25 years ago and it's been the poor maintenance and allowance of immigrants in the area that's led to its degradation. Now its quite a dangerous area of town to go into. Lots of crime.
Yeah true hey!!!
immigrants always getting the blame.
My parents lived in Yoeville and partied (discoed in hillbrow) it was very decent 🙈
@@listenupshow5084 Immigrants have no genetic ties or feeling of responsibility to the countries they come to. Big immigration ruins the World. Big parts of Europe is now a shithole because of headless immigration.
@@ChocolateMilk.. thats not the immigrants fault. Its the goverment not limiting the number of immigrants into the country and making opportunities available for them etc.
Progress is progress but in the old days you could walk around hillbrow bare footed at 4am without a care
chris hamlin you still could haha
n s Yh bcuz ur foot would probably fall off from all that glass and stones
Wena?
Where did you get the "4am" from? It was during the day. Probably around 4pm.
I miss it then
Sadly the rainbow nation envision by Mandela..... Is turning monocolor...
If you mix all colors together, you get black.
Profezor Snayp this despite that all colours in a light spectrum is white (no racism intended).
@@ProfezorSnayp f@cked up all paint together...is useless on the end.
Rainbow nation as in "ethnicities". There are hundreds. They may be the same colour, but they are from different backgrounds entirely. Sotho, Zulu, Tswana, Xhosa, Tsonga, Venda.....just to name a few obvious ones....thats pretty "rainbow" to me.
@@embira4256 I'm sure that's not what Mandela meant. The national anthem is sang in different languages including Afrikaner and English for a reason. I'm not an SA citizen and I have no stake for its success nor failure. As an outsider I just feel sad that the political elites are manipulating the mass for their gains at the expense of minorities.
Big up to Tata Jimmy for showing you "the good, the bad and the ugly" 🇿🇦
Yeah, maybe Joburg and Pretoria are not a place a foreigner would want to visit, but the rest of South Africa is AWESOME! Lived there as expat for 2,5 years and absolutely love SA. I've been in more than 25 countries around the world, and South Africa is my favorite by far. I miss you SA.
Hillbrow is not a reflection of Johannesburg
Same way the Cape flats are not a reflection of Cape Town
@@roblucci2366Hillbrow was at one point the main CBD of Johannesburg. It’s not comparable to the cape flats which have always been a township
I see part of your hair was already stolen mwahaha
hahaha
😊👍🏿
😂😂😂
LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE COURTY STOLEN OUR BELVED COUNTRY IS BRANKRUPT BY THE BLACK ANC GOVERNMENT!
@@wendyferguson4829 yeah... and people died because of the past white government... would you rather die or be bankrupt? Anyway we are all affected at the end of the day... black or white
I live in Joburg and it's great to see your perspective on the city. You went to places I don't even dare to go to! This is a great Vlog. Thanks for sharing, mate.
You are wise not to go there.
I love watching your experiences how do you afford to travel to all these destinations? Keep up the great footage!! And thank you my friend!
So glad you have a chance to visit South Africa. It is a beautiful country where the sky seems to never end. I'm predicting you will want to go back for another visit. I lived in Joburg (Sandton) for several years and can echo what you're feeling. Stay safe and keep you eyes open always, it can be dangerous even when you least expect it.
Thank you, Lisa, appreciate the tips :)
Welcome to my home country South Africa
Thank you!
@Hairy Wombat found the American. He thinks South Africa is a city
What a beautiful city that used to be.....
@Gary Garratt 😂😂😂😂😂 really
It sure was, I loved working in the City, leaving work in the afternoon the pouring rain and beautiful warm sunlight, it was a glorious time, now a dream, but what a beautiful memory; we were lucky! Happy Days, it was heavenly away from the UK and the rotten weather.
Agreed, you see all these hoodlums, homeless, etc. walking around the old colonial architecture. You can tell it use to be a damn fine place with a different type of people. Postcard worthy at one time.
u mean when all the blacks were not in it?
Look at these racist fucks reminiscing 😂
Looks like S.A. is on schedule to catch up to Zimbabwe fairly soon!
They're already there
@@lizlovesafrobeats No it’s not?!?
Not even close
We are already there, with all the fucking looting!!
Yep, I agree! Sure, their currency is still standing but the unemployment, homeless, trash and crime is filled in sh!thole S.A.
Can’t wait for the deep dive into Africa, Nick! I love that you want to see it all - the good, the bad, and the ugly. You strike a terrific balance between sharing your personal experience and letting us, your viewers, form our own opinions about what we’re seeing and researching based on your vlogs it’s that generosity of spirit that makes you such a fabulous channel to watch. A+
Thank you for such a kind comment, makes my day! Glad you are enjoying the videos, appreciate your encouragement :)
I don't think I'll ever go there, it looks scary and the vibe is very unsafe.
The people are actually awesome and you will fondly think back of the smiles and warm hearts of the Africans.............Its just a pity that certain politicians is trying very hard to drive a wedge between all of us and so stealing our smiles.
That is the result of almost 400 years of injustices and oppression. White people ruined that country.
Mint Mastering: Get bent.
arg please come man, we need your camera bag and money , come by we'll make sure we don't hurt you
LOL well there's different parts of South Africa and different kinds of places even in joburg, but if you're so narrow minded as to think everywhere in South Africa is like this, lol don't bother coming ✌.
I'm proudly south African..
You can still be proud of where you came from even if it’s gone to shit from where it was .
😂
r s kick rocks you racist bitch
r s racist asl
r s yeah black people can be racist too . You’re showing your stupidity right now . Learn how to farm and feed your people .
Your vlogs were truly amazing. Love your insights and the way you share your journey with us.
I also live in Johannesburg, it sucks... Atleast 2 break-ins a year at my house... Cant wait to get outa here😒
it depends on where u live in joburg

Man that sucks. How is the country side?
@@warfighter1988 beautiful but the locals are hard-wired to steal, that's SA's biggest problem. even the rich amongst them, like politicians, just can't stop stealing, like its a religion. And then their constituents just admire them even more! THATS the crazy part. They keep voting for them! generalising of course, but generalising does paint a pretty clear picture on most things.

Sad but true 😢
*We need a clinical psychologist for this comment section*
No psychologist can fix this.. Even the renowned Jordan Peterson just washes his hands and says 'They're in big trouble'. No attempt at a solution. South Africa is a spiritual war-zone. There is a tremendous amount of genuine witchcraft and satanism here, but my God is greater. Watch this space.
