    on a repeater , input is more valuable than output. wattage out is fine and dandy, but without receive sensitivity you ain't going to repeat anything. if anything, you might want to put an LNA (but will also raise the noise floor) on the receiver side, or chose a radio with good receiver sensitivity to receive on (a super heterodyne receivers are normally best)

    I purchased the 80watt unit off eBay just out of curiosity. The most it would put out was around 60 watts.
    The downside of it was it lasted about a month on my repeater keying up every 45 min.

      That is good to know! Did it have a fan on it? And was the fan only coming on when the unit got warm? Maybe if the fan was on all the time it may have helped?

    So if the duplexer is a 50 watt. Does that mean I wouldn’t want to put more than 50 into it?

    • @GMRStwowayradio

      That is correct, however, I know someone who put 40 watts into a 10 watt duplexer for a year, and it never went out. he did have a fan blowing on it too.

    I have a wouxan kg-935g that can't hit a repeater 2 to 3 miles away. I have a diamond a50 antenna. I bought the retevis rt91 amp. I have a 5 amp pyramid ps9kx 13.8 volt power supply. Will it work if I use just the battery pack on the wouxun kg-935g? And will the power supply work? Just trying to make a contact to a repeater.

      I can't recall what that retevis rt97 draws for amps BUT if you want to test before buying a better power supply then your best bet is to hook up the retevis RT97 amp to a 12 volt car battery. Then see if you can hit the repeater if you can, then try the power supply if you can't hit the repeater then the power supply amps are to low. But keep in mind the radio will draw amps to. I think it's just best to buy a 30amp power supply for 25.00 I have the links in my videos for that power supply.

      yes, as I said in the video, sometime people need more power because the duplexer takes power away. 50 watts is to the antenna, so you can feed a duplexer more than that as long as you have 50 watts going to the antenna.

    What is a duplexer

    • @GMRStwowayradio
      @GMRStwowayradio Рік тому

      Basically, it allows a transmitter and receiver to share a single antenna. Meaning, you just need ONE antenna and not TWO antennas.

      Hey, thanks for the reply, I didn't think anyone would respond to that question.
      I just got my GMRS license, and now I'm studying for the technician test.
      My goal is to eventually earn an extra class license so I have the best understanding of the bands and how everything operates.
      I know the FCC disapproves of cross communication between HAM & GMRS , but I'd like to get an all band ham and program GMRS frequencies into it and just have one radio to operate within the guidelines of the FCC, responsibly.
      Though I'm not sure that is possible.

      I'm a general class ham and licensed for gmrs. I just got 2 baofeng uv-5r gmrs radios. I don't mean an unlocked uv-5r. It is tagged as a gmrs so that is what I use it for. I If you plug it in to chirp it can be programmed for ham bands and will transmit on ham bands. I go hiking and hunting and if something goes bad I'm blowing up every channel possible. This does what you want but it is illegal to cross transmit unless of emergency. But you can be into a clean baofeng on radioddity and a gmrs version for like $50-60. Those goofy abbree tacti-dork antennas are pretty good for $10 and they make a gmrs version now
