The Last of Us is an example of how the production was so accurate because the game itself was amazing and they added a little bit more of a flair with the aesthetics!! It has a Walking Dead vibe to it and I hope the show keeps running to wherever the games stop at!!
But the show runners and directors also need to be passionate about the game in the first place otherwise they would be changing stuff for the sake of it like in previous adaptations of video games like Halo
The show runners butchered the game in some parts, and made a competent adaptation in other parts. They’re passionate about money and vaguely progressive politics that make more sense in 2014. But mostly money.

Hi StudioBinder this is Sridhar from India, Tamil Nadu. I've been following all your contents for the past 4 years.. I think nowadays Web Series have a lots of creative techniques and best production design than movies in narrating a story.. I would like to suggest you to focus more on Web Series and do more breakdowns on it.. And I want you to analyze the directing styles of Mike Flanagan & Taylor Sheridan Movies and Web Series.. Thankyou 😊.
They really did exceptional on this adaptation. I really say it's because everyone had a passion to do the game justice and the producer of the video game was able to work with the director. Something video game films in the past never did. They recently did this with the Super Mario Bros. film and the reception it's received is evident.
Although Im not a fam of all the creative choices concerning the storytelling, I have no trouble admitting that this show looks and feels incredible and dis an amazing job recreating the feel of the game. In particular I love the wider focus of their lenses.
The colour of the screen during the Ellie hacking scene was good, the lack of blood on Ellie was bad. She would have been splattered all over after that.
(Chapter 3) 14:10 - The technique used to mainly shoot this car scene seems to be inspired by the film "Children Of Men" by Alfonso Cuarón with cinematography by "Emmanuel LubezkI" (2006). I thought about it in terms of the context of the scene, they are very similar. Car Scene: ua-cam.com/video/RSItluZwCEs/v-deo.html
11:27It's a shame they cut this scene of Joel killing at least one of David's guys, 11:59 and this scene which is probably the part of her seeing the fireflies fly in front of her
Great analysis. My problem with the show was that the CGI was really glaring in several shots/scenes :( I think they could have put a bit more effort in those, especially episode 1, as the pilot sets the tone. I feel they've spent most of their budget on Pedro Pascal (which I don't find the perfect casting) and shilling magazines for positive reviews and continuous exposure. Mags like Gamespot have trodden the spam threshold reposting the same articles over and over, trying to convince how "episode 3 is the best episode in television" (🙄)
To be fair, Naughty Dog games are playable films, so adapting the game to live-action isn't as difficult as other adaptations. That being said, the translation process is cool to look at and learn about how to approach the same concept in a different way
Last of Us succeded because the game itself was already mad like a Hollywood tv show. They took the game and made it into live action scene by scene adding what they want here and there
One of the best adaptations and as gamer and filmmaker I was interested in watching it but the camera shake totally killed it for my personal taste, I find it very annoying IMO.
I'm still torn about the naturalistic approach; on one hand it helps ground the show and make the setting more relatable, on the other hand this very relatability makes the atmosphere too relatable to be engaging, most of the time
@@StudioBinder I guess? It was just too familiar for me to find it interesting enough. Like, that was probably how it would actually feel like to be in such setting. I feel like such works benefit from harsher shadows, more muted colors and more prominent soundscape to achieve a more engaging atmosphere However, I'm torn because I can't deny that their approach is still unique and interesting. Like, a "boring apocalypses" where everything looks and feels like our mundane daily lives? I'll watch that
Street fighter and mortal kombat we're faithful, people just complained about the"ham"and"cheese", Mario, was by people who didn't know or care for the source material!
The Last of Us is the first good game adaptation because the game was already structured as a visual narrative with finely crafted characters and set pieces. That is why it works as a series. You can't do anything with the likes of Doom. There is no narrative substance in Doom. Or why something like Resident Evil has failed so many times as movies or series. Have you played the games? They make no sense when it comes to narrative or characters.
And they used to say that video games are for children. Wait, don't they still do that? Nonetheless, Great work Studiobinder. _Last of Us_ is indeed a masterpiece. Wish, someday you'll do a video essay on _The Walking Dead_ too.
THE IRONY when it actually worked, it still turned out to be completely unnecessary to the source material being a better version. In other words, there was no need to make the tv show at all - complete waste of time as it added nothing and therefore, diluted something, making it less than it was.
Honestly, I hate that video game adaptations are constantly bundled into a pile, when just like every other piece of media it should be look at, on a case by case basis. Matt mcmuscles knows!
@@StudioBinder. There we're we just have to look for them. Like Prince of Persia hitting broad strokes simularities, while doing sensible changes like making the dagger of time the movie's ultimate mcguffin rather than a gemeplay tool constantly around given there's no sand monsters iether!
@@StudioBinder personally I found the shots were rarely framed in a way that was either aesthetically pleasing or aided the storytelling, it just seemed a bit “generic over the shoulder” to me. But as said in the video maybe that’s the point, to mimic the playable portions of the game. To me it just felt underwhelming, but still a decent show!
cinematography wasn't anything to rave about, and the production design felt veryyyyy cheap at times. crazy to see that they built entire neighborhoods for it, feels wasted tbh. there wasn't a single aspect of the show that improved upon the source material. such a disappointing adaptation for one of the greatest games ever made.
