I'm glad I came across this. I have a 2023 HotSprings Envoy with the connected spa system. I'm not a big fan of how Watkins built the software. I reached out to them last year for the API to interact with it but they said it's proprietary. From watching the video it appears that commands are responsive from home assistant. I see you have a digi module in yours as well. It's not still hooked up along with the esp right? I definitely plan to use your setup. I know I do not have an expansion board in my unit. Do you know where that can be purchased from?

On the video, I have both the HA/ESP32 and the Watkins DIGI devices installed. I used the DIGI device to see how everything worked and development, but I now only use Home Assistant and have DIGI disconnected. The Home Assistant integration is instant fast, almost no lag at all due to everything being local and the smarts being in the ESP32 device in the control box. You can also do a lot more like emulating the audio device, controlling light colors, etc.
The expansion board is optional. If you have a free expansion connector, you can use that or disconnect your DIGI device and connect ESP32 instead. Many IQ2020 boards have 2 expansion ports. If you have no ports left and want more ports, search for "Watkins 74150". I got mine on eBay.

@@AAlliieennX Thanks, I'm going to get this stuff ordered. I should have a port free as the only thing installed is the digi device unless the freshwater saltwater required one of those ports.
I'm looking forward to what can be done, I hate how restrictive the app is. The app also caused my tub to go into a clean mode loop for over 8 hours recently. I didn't notice the jets kept turning off and on throughout the night and I woke up to a tub that was 111 degrees just due to the pumps running. Once I disconnected the digi gateway, the loop stopped.
I have a handful of things I need to make smart outside still to make this fully meet my needs, but getting HA going will be a good first step.

Nice. Once setup, open an issue on GitHub and share your experience. I keep a running list of all tested HotTubs here: github.com/Ylianst/ESP-IQ2020/blob/main/documentation/tested.md and it would be nice to add your model and version number to that list. People have reported the jets starting up and other issues with the DIGI device and I suspect this is why dealers generally will not sell it.
